Ratna Ling Retreat Center is a northern California group and personal retreat center located just 90 miles north of San Francisco in the redwood forests of Sonoma County.

You enter the doors of the lodge at 3 p.m., remove your shoes, and are warmly greeted with tea and the wholesome serenity of the Ratna Ling community. A friendly staff member will give you detailed instructions for your well-being on retreat, a schedule of classes, and the keys to your new home away from home. You will walk a short distance to your beautiful private cottage and begin to feel grounded and supported as you breathe in the cleansing fresh air. Along with redwood and oak trees, you may see many of the peaceful animal friends going about their routine. Families of deer, wild turkeys, ravens, rabbits, and fox, just to name a few.

Enjoying a hot cup of tea or coffee in the privacy of your cottage balcony, you soak in the natural beauty as all of your cares and worries seem to dissolve into space. Freed from the demands of modern life, you will reconnect with the healing qualities of steady breath and an open heart. The walk to the dining hall for 05:30 p.m. dinner is refreshing as the sun begins to settle for the evening. A lovingly prepared meal awaits and begs to be eaten with mindfulness and care as the food nourishes your body and soul.

Back at your cottage, an abundance of stars gleam overhead while the nurturing quietude lulls you into a restful nights sleep. Upon waking, you feel rejuvenated and ready to make the most of the day. You walk to the yoga room while the stars fade into the light. This space is a safe and sacred environment open to all, with plenty of yoga and meditation props for everyone. Your instructor will guide you through gentle and effective movement and stillness practices in the Buddhist tradition, in an attempt to awaken the fullness of your potential.

Your body and senses awake and energized, you head to 08:00 a.m. breakfast. The day is full of possibilities and to get the most out of your Ratna Ling experience, you will want to take advantage of the wonderful regularly scheduled meditation or yoga classes. In your free time, you may want to enjoy a healing massage (2-week advanced reservations necessary) or bodywork, schedule private instruction in Buddhist studies, venture into Salt Point State Park for a hike through the redwoods, explore the local beaches, share conversation with new friends, catch up on your reading or journaling, or simply enjoy the art of being. This full day also includes a healthful and delicious lunch, served at 12:15 p.m., and dinner, served at 05:30 p.m., and you are more than welcome to bring your own special snacks or beverages.

In the evening, you light the fireplace in your cottage and reflect upon the day. Perhaps you learned something new in one of the classes or discovered a delicate flower that seemed to have appeared just for you. You feel recharged, rebalanced, and ready to implement these new discoveries into your life at home. In the morning, you may decide to join a second yoga class, or maybe sit for meditation by your fireplace. After breakfast, you are excited to share your experience with the loved ones in your life as you prepare to depart at 11:00 a.m. On your drive home, colors seem a little brighter. You are certain that this personal retreat is exactly what you needed and plan to return very soon.

Ratna Ling Retreat Center classes

Ratna Ling welcome guests of all levels of experience to join in their spiritual study and practice. Many of the classes are deeply rooted in Tibetan Buddhist teachings and are designed to create the conditions for the exploration of your inner environment. Curiosity and an open mind is all that is required. Beginner and expert level students are welcome. Please check for class times and availability when you check in. All classes are complimentary and no prior registration is necessary.

Kum Nye relaxation (Tibetan yoga)

Experience a completely different style of yoga, one designed to reconnect your body, mind, and senses. Kum Nye (Tibetan yoga) is a gentle healing system that relieves stress, transforms negative patterns, and helps you to be balanced and healthy. Components of the class include simple (though not necessarily easy) postures and mindful movements, as well as working with the breath and meditation. Perfect for those who enjoy a slow, meditative, and relaxing path to balance and harmony. Class held in the Healing Buddha classroom.


Meditation is an ongoing practice of self-knowledge that attunes you to your true inner nature. Once you experience even a glimpse of this nature, you naturally begin to live more meaningful and harmonious lives - lives that benefit yourselves and others. This class will introduce the basic components of sitting meditation: posture, relaxation of the body, awareness of the breath, and neutrality toward thoughts and other mental activity. Based on Gesture of Balance and Hidden Mind of Freedom by Tarthang Tulku. Class held in the Healing Buddha classroom.

Qi Gung

Coming from the ancient Chinese practice of combining breath and regenerative movement, this class will begin with the inner practice of balancing the elements in the body and the mind. The surroundings at Ratna Ling support this slow, introspective interaction with nature, the breath and life. Class held in the Healing Buddha classroom.

Essential movement

Experience a guided, slow, moving meditation, for relaxation and body-mind awareness. This is an opportunity to learn what moves you and how you have infinite choices in how you move through life. This class can free your body to move with ease and grace while bringing joy to your mind. A perfect way to acclimate to your new environment, and prepare to rest peacefully for the night. Class held in the Healing Buddha classroom.

Nature walk

A favorite with guests is the nature walk. Stroll through the serene and beautiful wooded paths filled with unsurpassed vistas. Reflect and meditate among the redwoods and witness the untamed wildlife interaction. No matter what season, the environment will feed your spirit. This will be a brisk walk to enhance cardiovascular circulation. Meet at the circle of redwoods across from the lodge entrance.

Driving directions from Bay Area and Points East

  • Travel CA Hwy 101 north / Redwood Highway past Santa Rosa exits.
  • Take exit 494 for River Road toward Guerneville / Calistoga.
  • Make first left onto Mark West Springs Road / River Road.
  • Continue west to follow River Road for about 27 miles.
  • Make a slight right to head north on CA 1 towards Jenner.
  • Continue along highway Route 1 for approximately nine miles past Jenner.
  • Turn right onto Timber Cove Road to make your way up the ridge. Timber Cove Inn is located ocean-side almost diagonally across from Timber Cove Road. If you pass Timber Cove Inn, you have gone too far.
  • Continue up the incline for just under two miles. Timber Cove Road will end at the top of the hill and T into Seaview Road.
  • Turn left onto Seaview Road. In about three miles, Seaview Road becomes Hauser Bridge Road just past Kruse Ranch Road to the left.
  • Remain to the right or straight on Hauser Bridge Road. White fencing runs along the length of the Ratna Ling property.
  • You will pass a small gate on the right and a larger gate on the left, but continue on to the main gate on your right. The main gate is white and has an archway with the name, Ratna Ling Retreat Center, across the top.
  • The gate will open automatically. If it does not, back up and try again, steering your car towards the left side of the driveway.
  • Once you enter the gate look for a sign that indicates the lodge and registration, which is to your left.
  • Take the circle driveway, on your right.

Driving directions from the North

  • Take CA-Highwayy 1 south past the town of Gualala.
  • From Gualala, you will remain on Highway 1 for approximately 23 miles.
  • Continue past the small villages of Sea Ranch and Stewarts Point. When you see the Timber Cove Inn on your right, approximately 12 miles or 23 minutes past Stewarts Point, be prepared to turn left almost immediately onto Timber Cove Road to make your way up the ridge.
  • Once you have made your left turn onto Timber Cove Road, continue up the incline for just under two miles. Timber Cove Road will end at the top of the hill and bisect Seaview Road.
  • Turn left onto Seaview Road. In about three miles, Seaview Road becomes Hauser Bridge Road once you pass Kruse Ranch Road to the left.
  • Remain to the right to stay straight on Hauser Bridge Road. You will soon see white fencing which runs along the length of the Ratna Ling property.
  • You will pass a small gate on the right and a larger gate on the left, but continue on to the main gate which will be on your right hand side.
  • You may enter through the main gate which is white and is flanked by an archway with a gold painted design with the name, Ratna Ling Retreat Center. This gate will be on your right-hand side. You can also look out for a sign with an arrow that indicates retreat registration.
  • When you drive up to this gate it will automatically open. Enter the gate and take a sharp left and follow the drive-way to the right.
  • Please proceed to the front of the lodge where you may park on the paved circle.

Seasonal information

The climate around Ratna Ling, though mostly moderate, can change rapidly. Winter weather can be moderate and sunny to quite chilly, windy, and rainy (November - April) with temperatures averaging in the low to mid-50s.

Summers, on the other hand, tend to be dry and warm, climbing into 80s to 90s during the day and then cooling down to 50s to 60s in the evenings. Hot days are often followed by a few days of marine layer fog that can drop the daytime temperature by 20 degrees.

Mobile communication information

There is rarely cell phone reception in this area (coastal highway Route 1 to Ratna Ling). If you need to use your cell phone, plan to make your last phone calls well in advance. Every cottage has a telephone that is available for your use and calls within the country are free of charge. The phone in your cottage can also receive calls and your direct line will be displayed on the telephones LED screen. Feel free to give this number to family or friends once you have arrived. Complimentary wireless internet is available in every cottage and in common areas. There is no password needed.

Dressing information

Due to the spiritual nature of Ratna Ling, men and women are asked to dress respectfully and tastefully and to not wear revealing or offensive clothing.

What to bring

Rain gear, umbrella and good sturdy shoes during the rainy season, appropriate outerwear for the season, yoga clothes or clothes that allow you to move freely, flashlight, water bottle, alarm clock, slip-on shoes or slippers for indoors, insect repellant for summer retreats, personal hygiene items such as your favorite shampoo, moisturizer, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, calling cards for international calls, additional snacks, and beverages into your cottage.

Important information

Ratna Ling asks all guests and visitors to kindly and respectfully remove their outdoor shoes at all entrances including the lodge, dining hall, yoga room, and cottages. Clean indoor only shoes, such as slippers, are wonderful items to bring. Bare or socked feet are okay indoors.

Enjoy delectable vegetarian cuisine from around the world when you stay with Ratna Ling. They use organic products and many of the vegetables and herbs are harvested daily from their gardens to produce delightful meals reflecting the current seasons bounty.     "Absolutely loved our time at Ratna Ling. Started with a fantastic massage from Shari which is not to be missed. Cottages are spacious and clean and full of light, fireplace was toasty, view off the back deck serene, beds fluffy and warm. Especially loved the yogurt and granola delivered to our door in the morning. Yoga in a beautiful space with wonderful teachers. Staff could not have been more welcoming and calming. Gardens are beautifully designed. Perfect quiet getaway. Cannot wait to go back."

    "The cottages are beautiful. Very well maintained and comfortable. The place is silent and gets really dark at night. Mornings are peaceful, and the meditation/yoga classes are very relaxing/refreshing. The food is amazing. The vegetarian food is yummy and there is plenty of variety. They could do better with breakfast, though. The people are extremely nice and interesting. My husband and I went for a weekend in December, so it got quite cold. It was a perfect get-away. Would love to go back there."

    "I chose Ratna Ling because it offered individual stays and schedule flexibilities. Free Wi-Fi is awesome, since the cellular connection is not very good. Each room had a landline and the all calls were free - added bonus. The food was very delicious, healthy and plenty. I was assigned a 2 bedroom cabin, very modern, clean, comfortable, and spacious. The kitchen had all the amenities/gadgets, 2 bedrooms, kitchen, living/dining room, and 1 bathroom, beds very comfortable. Everything was in great condition. Yoga and meditation classes - not good, nothing to recommend about them. They should add some more classes and better teachers. The evenings can be very long since there are no activities post dinners. There are no TV etc., so the evenings stretch until bedtime. Breakfast at 8am, lunch 12 noon, and dinner - 5:30.Overall the center is very remote, quiet, peaceful, and safe. Staff and the volunteers are super friendly and give you the space and quiet that you desire. It is good place to visit and relax and host group retreats.     "Just came back from a personal retreat at this amazing place. The environment was so beautiful and serene with old huge redwood trees that made me feel like I was walking on sacred ground. Deer and wild turkeys roamed around and the human presence didn't seem to scare or bother them. The cottage had a rustic look outside but the inside was spacious, modern, and elegantly decorated that I instantly felt so at home. The staff was friendly and helpful. I enjoyed the morning yoga classes very much. The buffet vegetarian meals were delicious and many of the vegetables came from the organic garden on the premise.We were also given a tour of Dharma Publishing facility where Buddhist books were published in English and Tibetan. Thousands of Tibetan books on the teaching of the Buddha were given to monks, nuns, lamas, and Tibetans in exile every year during the 10 days World Peace Ceremony in Bodh Gaya, India.The tranquility and peacefulness from this place was really restorative for me. It's a totally different world from the hustling, bustling, chaotic city life. I felt so relaxed and rejuvenated.The drive along the coast to the retreat center was spectacular. Also had a chance to meet some really nice co-retreaters. A wonderful experience that I love to recommend to everybody."

    "My wife and I were provided a weekend at Ratna Ling as a gift from a family member. The whole experience was fantastic. The staff is friendly, helpful, and so pleasant to deal with. The grounds are amazing with wildlife of all sorts roaming the property.The cabin, more like a mini-house, was nestled in the trees and was extremely comfortable. The deck is awesome to lie out on and read and listen to the birds. There are plenty of places to walk and enjoy the pure peace and quiet of nature.If all this was the end of the experience, that would be enough. But it was not. Meals are included with your stay. All meal items are vegetarian, but 80 - 90% of those items are vegan as well. I am vegan, but my wife is not and is still a meat eater. We brought crackers a peanut butter for her just in case. We did not have to break out any of those items while we were there. My wife was amazed at the quality, variety, and deliciousness of the meals. All items served are clearly marked as vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free. Yes, gluten free as well. Jeremy, their executive chef, was kind enough to describe and answer any questions regarding the meals and their preparation. As much as I hate to say it, the meals were the highlight of this trip, just because we were so blown away by how good they were.If I could, I would give Ratna Ling 10 stars for an awesome totally positive experience in every way."

    "My partner and I booked a 2-night stay at Ratna Ling not knowing exactly what to expect. We were completely blown away by the beauty of the grounds, the views, and the cabins are very spacious, modern, and luxurious. The meals, included in the price, were really delicious with lots of vegan and gluten free options. My favorite spot was our deck overlooking the valley and forest.The nice thing about this place is that it's really up to you how much you want to participate in the activities offered. We participated in morning yoga one day and also took a massage lesson with Cindy from Mellow Mates - highly recommended - but other than that, we just relaxed in our cabin and hiked around the area.The highlights for us were exploring the redwood tree cathedrals around the property, star-gazing at night - Im not sure Ive ever seen so many shooting stars in one night - and watching the animals that live on the property: deer, lizards, turkeys and lots of birds are all around, and a group of wild turkeys actually used the ground under our deck as their launching pad to fly into the pine trees at dusk. Pretty spectacular!The volunteers at the center were very friendly. Our arrival was the only part of our stay that left a little to be desired. It was hard to find anyone that worked there when we arrived, and we then got three different sets of directions - all of them wrong - about how to drive our car down to our cabin. However, once we were settled, we were completely fine and didn't have any more problems.If you need a little rest and relaxation or need a nature getaway, I highly recommend Ratna Ling. I'd go back in a heartbeat. Both my partner and I left feeling refreshed and more grounded."

    "This place is hard to describe. It's a luxury 5-star resort-like stay with a common eating area with no room service. I believe there are about 16 brand new cottages. It's definitely worth taking a trip up if you have the time. The vegetarian food is amazing and I'm not a vegetarian by any means. In fact, we thought we were going to be served celery and carrot sticks so we stopped at the last convenience store and bought tons of canned galore. Canned tuna anyone? There is no need for that.My stay kinda sucked because we were in during one of the biggest rainstorms in the Bay Area for the season, but it wasn't Ratna Ling's fault! The cottage was beautiful and the deep forest view from when it wasn't raining was amazing. I would highly recommend this place. The staff is really nice and pretty happy.Hit it up and get your zen on!"

    "Beautiful newly built cabins with attention to simplistic high quality woodworking and high hand done detail right down to the beautiful iron hardware on doors, and vent coverings throughout the house. Small kitchenette areas (not a full kitchen with stoves, just microwave and fridge, and sink area), sitting areas, healthy food (all inclusive), decks overlooking forested areas, and wonderful people on site make this place a great getaway."
