Driving directions from San Jose

The drive from San Jose will take from 4 to 5 hours.

You first must drive to Puntarenas, which is where you will have to take a ferry. That drive is about 1- 1.5 hours from San Jose. The best thing to do is to ask your car rental company for the best way to get to Puntarenas, depending on where you are located in San Jose.

Take the ferry that leaves from Puntarenas port to Paquera port. The ferry is called Ferry Tambor, but it does not go to Tambor; it is just called by that name because the ferry company is owned by a huge beach resort located in Tambor beach. The ferry crossing takes about 1 hour and is very scenic, plus a good opportunity to stretch and rest from the drive.

Once you get to Paquera all you have to do is follow the other cars, and follow the signs that say "Malpas" or "Santa Teresa".

The paved road will end in Cobano, and from there to us you will ride on a gravel road. A four wheel drive vehicle is strongly recommended. It is about a 1 hour and 20 minute drive.

You just drive in a straight line, dont turn anywhere.

Once you get to the famous Malpas and Santa Teresa crossroad (you will notice our only big shopping center that we have) you must take a right toward Santa Teresa and drive for about 5 km (your car will mark the distances in km).

Pranamar will be on the left hand side (ocean side of course). You will see our sign.

You will also know that you are getting close because after driving for about 4 km from the crossroad, you will see the ocean right next to you on the left side. There is only one stretch of about 400 meters in that road where you will literally be next to the waves.

The hotel is just 200 meters past that ocean side part of the road.

Arrival by airplane

The easiest/fastest way to get here is by air. There are 2 companies in the country. Sansa Airlines flies from/to SJO international airport, and Nature Air flies from/to Pavas Airport, 20 minutes away from SJO Airport. You can check their schedules online to see if it fits your itinerary. Our staff can also book any flight for you if needed. If their schedule does not fit your itinerary, another very good option is to charter a plane, which becomes monetarily convenient also when it is 4+ people.

A private charter has more luggage allowance than the 30 pounds that are allowed per person by the local public airlines, plus we use Costa Rica's only U.S. FAA Part 129-approved airline. You have to fly into Tambor, and that flight takes only 25 minutes. From there, we will arrange a taxi for you, or you can have a car rental meet you and do the drive yourself. It is a 50 minute drive to Pranamar.

For information about the booking conditions, please send Pranamar Villas an inquiry.

"My first trip by myself... I wanted to go to a very relaxing tropical place so I picked Costa Rica. I had never been there before and after doing some research I finally stumbled upon Pranamar. I cannot even describe what a paradise this place is. I got the beach bungalow and was very happy with my choice. The setting is beautiful, you literally are on the beach and the staff is amazingly kind and welcoming. I took 2 yoga lessons a day and relaxed on the beach or on my personal hammock the rest of the time. The food is unbelievable and so are the yoga lessons. Nancy was my teacher and I have never been able to find someone like her. She is very knowledgeable and has such a big heart. I dream about being at Pranamar every day since then and I cannot wait to be able to go back one day. Namaste."

"I really enjoyed Pranamar! The staff truly tries to make guests feel cared for here. So friendly and helpful. Prettiest yoga studio I have ever practiced in, with ocean sounds in the background and serenity-inspiring Balinese decor. Spectacular sunsets and fabulous massages. Gardens are lush and well tended. Hammocks on our villa's porch and on the beach were my preferred perches. Food at the restaurant on the property is very fresh and delicious. Dinners offered on the beach during certain months. Nancy's yoga class is very popular, and for good reason. The Balinese decor around the property enhances its Zenlike quality. The natural pool surrounded with what looks like volcanic rock, was one of our favorites--at low tide, the waves stay out of this clear, large pool, and the colorful fish danced around us in the crystal clear water. Fun things to do nearby, like zip-lining, which we loved in Mal Pais. Enjoyed our walk to nearby town of Santa Teresa. Perhaps this won't be believable if I do not point out some minor flaws: Not easy to get to Pranamar (terrible roads, post rainy-season, and fairly out of the way), but once there, it is heavenly! Could have provided blankets on the beds (the beds were dressed only in sheets and pillows, but blankets were provided upon request). And the beach to the left and right of the Pranamar property had quite a lot of debris on them (we were told this happens just after the rainy season). In any event, I left my week at Pranamar feeling refreshed and relaxed. Pura vida!"

"This amazing yoga inspired hotel in front of the beach is the best to relax while you can have a quiet surrounding, the bungalows are huge and cozy, within a nature atmosphere. The gardens are beautiful and according to the place. Yoga lessons are amazing! Nancy is one of the best yoga instructors I' ve ever had. "

". After a delicious healthy breakfast, you can go to yoga, then the beach, where you have hammock beneath the palm trees. They have a food place at the beach , but I did not try it. The restaurant offers a wide variety of choices. Service is five stars and the staff very very friendly if you start a conversation with them. They respect privacy, as well. The main restaurant is quiet and nice. Bartenders are very professional and I definitively recommend a stay here, if you go to Santa Teresa."

"I attended a yoga/surf/sup retreat hosted at Pranamar which was wonderful, it is truly a gem. The facility is beautiful, rooms very comfortable, all the amenities you need and food is excellent. It is a quiet place to read, relax, reflect or, enjoy a cocktail by the pool and definitely catch amazing sunsets. Whatever you like, it's there. The beach is steps away and just a short walk away is excellent surfing. The yoga shala is large, open and fully shaded. I had excellent classes with Nancy who is an incredible yoga instructor with a wealth of training and knowledge. I loved her energy and style. Everyone from the office to the restaurant staff and massage therapists are professional, laid back and always willing to go the extra mile. I will definitely return. Absolutely loved the whole experience."

"There is nothing not to like about this resort. Susan and Greg are fantastic hosts and Nancy is by far one of the best yoga Instructors I have ever had the privilege of meeting as a participant in a class. The yoga shala is open air, large, and perfect for the popular daily morning yoga classes. The restaurant at Pranamar has some of the best, if not the best food we have ever tasted in Costa Rica. The bungalows are a true representation of what it would be like to be vacationing in Bali. The grounds are spectacular and the beach directly in front of the hotel boasts some of the best tide pools for snorkeling we have ever seen. It was such a wonderful experience for both my husband and I. We left Pranamar feeling a bit changed. It's what the meaning of vacation should be. Although it may be a tad on the higher side for lodging in Santa Teresa, it is well worth it. You will not be disappointed!"

"My husband, daughter and I stayed at Pranamar for five days and enjoyed every minute there. The accommodations are lovely. The beach area is blissful, with hammocks and chairs under beautiful trees which provide just enough shade. The restaurant is excellent, and the yoga classes as well. In particular, we were blown away by the front desk staff who, from the outset, and even after we left, helped us in so many ways, from arranging flights, helping with our car rental, helping find another place to move (when sadly we wanted to stay longer but they were booked solid), and even after we left and were in Tambor, regarding our car rental return. Marcella and Alejandra went above and beyond the call of duty, and are very caring and thoughtful as well, and we can't thank them enough for all they did for us. (Dago and Alejandro were also wonderful.) We can't wait to return to such a magical place."

"My fianc and I were stunned by the beauty of this place, the lovely staff, the delicious meals! We attended the 2015 week-long yoga retreat lead by the wonderful Lauren Rudick. Our group was treated well by all of the staff, fed amazing meals - choice of vegetarian, chicken or fresh ocean fish for dinner - all dietary restrictions taken into consideration. The grounds were well looked after and housekeeping staff were quick and thorough. On our last day, my fianc, my sister, a new friend and I sat down for lunch, and when our taxi arrived, the wait staff packaged our lunch to go and comped our drinks! I only wish we could have stayed longer!! Thank you Susan and all of the workers at Pranamar Villas and yoga retreat!"

"This resort went above and beyond anything I dreamt of... I am a yogini and a healthy living blogger and I finally felt as if I found "my place". A week here was simply not enough time. Before coming to Pranamar, the office staff was very helpful in giving us information on how to get to the hotel and even set up transportation for our group. The staff became our family; they knew us all by name, they anticipated our needs, they were warm, caring and helpful. I found the property to be beautiful with a one of a kind yoga studio, nice rooms and delicious, healthy food. The passion and history behind the Pranamar is one you will hopefully be lucky enough to to hear from the owner Susan herself. Once I met Susan, I would wake up extra early just to have coffee and conversation with her and her staff. Susan is one of the most genuine and humble human beings I have ever met. She pours her love and passion into the Pranamar as her heart is in everything she does at the resort. I'm planning on making this resort my annual vacation spot. Costa Rica is an incredible place, however Pranamar made our experience even more memorable. Thank you!"

"I had the most amazing 8 days at Pranamar. The staff was professional and always willing to help. The grounds were absolutely immaculate and taken care of with lots of love. The food and Buddha Eyes was so delicious and always presented beautifully! I was there on a yoga retreat with Saul David Raye, but I was able to take a class with Nancy. Her class was great for all levels. If you wanted to challenge yourself you could and if you needed to take it easy you could. Nancy had a great vibe and the music was perfect! I have been raving about my trip to Santa Teresa to everyone I know and I would highly recommend Pranamar to anyone! It was amazing! Thank you so much for the best vacation I have ever been on"

"My husband and I spent a amazing week at Pranamar Villas during "rainy season" although the weather was amazing! We booked a honeymoon package. The hotel sorted out the car service picking us up to and from the airport. It's a little bit of a ride from the airport to Pranamar, we drove through a small river, it is definitely out there. We wanted something quiet, relaxing and non touristy. Pranamar was the perfect choice! We stayed in the ocean front villa #1, which was super awesome and very clean. It has two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a full kitchen. Bathroom downstairs is partially outside. There were these cool little crabs in there. Just coming and going, we enjoyed watching them! The upstairs balcony has hammocks and you are over looking the beach, very calming. We had a few baby lizards hanging around here and there, but they didn't bother us.You have to walk down the beach a little if you want to swim. The beach directly in front of the hotel is rocky, so there isn't much swimming. It is still quite beautiful and its nice to walk up and down the beach. We rented a quad and went into town a few times. This again was all arranged through the hotel. We also did a zip line tour, highly recommended. The hotel can book all of this for you. We ate almost all meals at Buddha Eyes, the restaurant within Pranamar. The food was amazing and very fresh every day. They have their herbs and veggies growing on the grounds. Its mostly vegetarian, some seafood, which was also very fresh. The staff was very friendly as well. Included in our package was yoga and a massage. My husband isn't much of a yogi, but I am, which was totally fine. The hotel isn't just for yogis! They offer a few classes a day. Nancy is one of the teachers there and she is amazing. The studio is outdoors and its absolutely beautiful. We both had our massages on the same day, outside on the beach. We can not wait to book our next trip!"

Make sure to do a yoga class in the yoga shala and get a massage on the beach while listening to the sound of the waves. "This review is very late as we spent 8 days at Pranamar is February 2014 for our honeymoon when we booked a garden bungalow with the surf and yoga package. My apologies for taking so long to write this review. The bungalow, gardens and beach were amazing. Right out front were the tidal pools to lounge in, and 10 minutes down the beach is Playa Hermosa where we surfed each morning and late afternoon. Our breakfast each morning was delicious and we loved the yoga classes and our surf instructor. On our 3rd night we were upgraded to the ocean front villa and after a quick move, we were very spoiled for the rest of our vacation. We went to sleep each night with the doors open listening to the ocean. I have recommended this resort to anyone traveling in the area and looking for a "higher end" place to stay. There are a couple of great restaurants within walking distance and the main strip is a quick ATV ride away. If you are looking for a calm, relaxing and romantic getaway this is the place. Yes there are going to be bugs and maybe even lizards and dogs, but it all adds to the charm of Costa Rica living."

I went with a girlfriend who is an avid surfer and she enjoyed the waves a great deal, especially since they were a quick 5-minute walk down the beach! I enjoyed the daily yoga classes that accompanied our stay. The yoga studio is gorgeous and every class was challenging. The restaurant Buddha Eyes, served the most healthy delicious food! Get the banana pancakes and iced cappuccino! The staff was friendly and accommodating! I wish I could vacation at Pranamar every year! I will recommend it to everyone and anyone who asks for a great place to stay in Costa Rica!"

"Pranamar is indeed a very beautiful and special place. My husband and I stayed for 7 nights in one of the oceanfront bungalows, as part of a yoga retreat we were attending. To start the resort is a beautiful - Balinese inspired village set around the pools and beach. The staff are all incredibly friendly and the service is excellent. The food is also amazing, you won't want to leave to eat anywhere else and there is no need to. The fresh juices and smoothies and incredible. The yoga shala is beautiful. Overall, a very special place and we will definitely be back!"

"Pranamar Villas and Yoga Retreat is an idyllic setting for a yoga retreat. Santa Teresa is secluded yet lively. The beach is beautiful. The villas are inviting; informal yet simultaneously exquisite in design and attention to detail. Susan and her staff are the crowning touch. They are friendly and helpful. You can tell they are actually happy to be working there even though obviously they work very hard at making your stay trouble free. "Just returned from a surf and yoga retreat led by Women's Quest, with accommodations at Pranamar. The staff, the rooms, the pool, food, setting and options are all top-notch. The attention to detail is outstanding, from the design and layout of the resort to the creative use of materials. Cleanliness is impeccable. The food was clean and fresh. The chefs are able to make substitutions as needed, and did so happily for my very restricted diet. And oh those smoothies! Greg is clearly passionate about the grounds and a guided landscape tour proved informational and fun, and yielded some fresh ginger and turmeric root for our use!"

"Nancy is the yoga goddess. If I could fly her, the yoga shala, and the beach to my backyard, I would do so in a minute! She is knowledgeable, thoughtful, beautiful, and passionate about her teachings and her practice. The options at the wellness center offer something for everyone, including a very gifted bio-magnetism healer. 5 stars, superbly done."

"My husband and I just enjoyed a wonderful eight days at Pranamar at the end of our honeymoon. From the beautifully designed and decorated villas, to the friendly and helpful staff, to the fresh and delicious food, this was one of the most enjoyable places I've ever stayed."

    ""

"We stayed in one of the beachfront villas, which we thought was worth the slightly higher price as you could watch the waves crash from the comfort of the villa's upstairs balcony. We also particularly liked the outdoor shower, the hammock, and the 'airiness' of the villa. Unlike some others who have reviewed Pranamar, we didn't have any issue with insects or bats in our villa. I think this was in large part thanks to the housekeeping staff who do a remarkably thorough clean of the entire villa daily. We did see lizards, crabs, birds and squirrels outside in the garden though, which I loved! "

    ""

"What really made Pranamar stand out from other beautiful resorts, however, was the staff, and the food and drinks at Buddha Eyes (Pranamar's restaurant). All the staff, and particularly the restaurant staff, were very friendly, happy, helpful and attentive. They really made us feel very welcome and were only too happy to help - including with surfing tips and practising our Spanish, all while maintaining efficient service. And the food was fantastic! The meals were fresh and tasty, and the drinks were equally delicious - make sure you try a Shiva's Nectar!"

    ""

"We also enjoyed the smaller size of the resort. Even though I think most of the villas and bungalows were occupied, the resort was never noisy or crowded, and we nearly always had the pool to ourselves. "

    ""

"I would highly recommend Pranamar, and look forward to returning, hopefully in the not too distant future!"

"My husband, kids and I have traveled to many places around the world and i've never felt compelled to write a review. All five of us simply love Pranamar. My husband and I went alone in January - to practice yoga and to learn how to surf - but we got so much more. We landed on one of the most remote and peaceful beaches in Costa Rica and in a resort that has the most open and friendly owners. Susan, Greg and Nancy are truly amazing people. Nancy's yoga class is unmatched - after practicing for 15 years in NYC, it is hard to find her style and in an open environment (while watching the Pacific Ocean waves crash in front of you). Susan helped us return to the area this summer, this time with our kids. We got back about two weeks ago and my kids, husband and I are still missing every moment of our time spent in this amazing place. Pranamar is peaceful, healing, perfect."

"Pranamar Villas is a lovely and idillic place to spend a few days in paradise. The rain season did not match this location. Fresh supplied towels never dried and smelled due to the humid climate. Fantastic was the Yoga session, that only experienced Yogis and beginner-Yogis that seek a challenge can keep up with, that takes place every morning for none-stop two hours. Appreciated would have been Yoga twice a day and half as advanced for all levels to match the 'inclusive'. The special outside Guru-Showers make the houses very open and accessible to everything and everyone. However, the overnight security guards were appreciated. Late August openings should be lowered in price and full payments should be refundable if the guest wishes to leave on the next day due to unmet expectations. We wish we'd experienced this resort in a dry season as we loved the idillic and calm and would have liked to experience what the pictures promised. We were disappointed about the reply when we addressed a view points to the reception. We couldn't help but be fully aware of the fact that this was end of season for Pranamar Villas."

"I was working in San Jose for the week and because of some comments about the new Costa Rican trends in hotels with a serenity environment and yoga classes, I decided to escape to Pranamar. It was one of the best decision I made in a long time. I normally travel a lot for bussiness and pleasure, so i am really experienced but the level of services, friendliness and tranquility this place offers, makes me want to come back very soon. I was pleasantly surprised with this hotel and its infrastructure. Despite I was by myself I enjoyed every minute. The personnel was always ready to help me in any need I had. Definitively I recommend this place. Don't come alone, this place is worthy to be shared.Don't miss to take the yoga classes and massages outside your bungalow, it is just awesome =)."

"Beautiful Bali style villas around a slate pool in a tropical paradise. This is an eco resort, so expect its gardens to invite the birds and wildlife and make you feel like you are in a national park rather than a resort. I have travelled to similar resorts in Asia and found this one to be the best value for money. Expect to pay upwards of $1,000 for something similar in other parts of the world. The restaurant serves great gourmet style food - other reviews mention buffet, but this is reserved for yoga parties. The menu features fresh seafood and a range of healthy options. Mayli was our server most nights and her service was top notch. The price was also locally competitive, but better in terms of consistent quality."
