Pondok Pitaya Yoga is suitable to all students, regardless of their level or experience in yoga. With the vibrant beach atmosphere, the class will move in several paces, as students begin to develop their asana practice. Fundamentals and alignment in postures, as well as breathing and meditation techniques are practiced, allowing students to gain an understanding of Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga. Students are given their yoga practice according to their ability.

Newer and beginner students tend to have a much shorter practice than those with more experience. As one gains more strength, stamina, flexibility, and concentration, additional postures will be given to the student. The appreciation and gratitude of the word "given" comes from how the practice is taught in India, where a yoga practice is something that a teacher gives to a student as a spiritual practice, a way to enhance one’s life.

This is in comparison to learning a lot of postures at once in a typical modern class. Pondok Pitaya’s yoga classes are structured classes, and the structure of the class depends on the teacher being able to keep track of what each student is doing. If a student has trouble with a particular asana, the teacher can offer a modification or work for a posture, which is consistent with the intention of the practice.

Nicky Sudianta

Eighteen years ago Nicky Sudianta began his spiritual path, when he first began to learn about energy work, energy healing system, and meditation with his Balinese spiritual teacher. In the same period of time he also started his job and work for the retreat center. He has been fortunate enough to meet and spend time with a number of yoga teachers, which have further inspired his own practice. Over the last eleven years Nicky has been doing yoga practice.

He received guidance from a Hatha certified yoga teacher, learnt, and practiced Hatha yoga. Then he deepen his practice by practicing Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga method and got certification with Yoga Alliance Yoga Teacher Training at All Yoga Bali. Nicky is passionate about sharing his knowledge and experience in yoga with others and has guided students who have come to Bali from right around the world in the ancient art of yoga practice.

Student’s testimonies speak for themselves of the respect that is held for Nicky’s teachings in how to live a life of integrity, balance, and inner peace through the practice of yoga and meditation.

Mckall Smith

McKall, you can call her Mac, has been living in southern California for the past ten years. She worked in studios as an instructor at fitness studios and practiced yoga at the same time. Her passion for life focused on everything from yoga, resistance training, to overall wellness, in everyday mindful living. As an avid long distance cyclist, she participated in tours for multiple sclerosis, as well as adventure rides spanning from the United States to Australia.

McKall takes pleasure in paddle boarding, riding jet skis, body boarding, and is honing her new skills as surfer on our very own Balian beach break. She loves to cook (then eat!) while following a healthy plant protein based lifestyle. After over a decade of practicing yoga, McKall earned a 200-hour teacher certification in Bali through the Yoga Works.

Her practice remains heavily focused on alignment-based postures and flows. Her teaching experience covers a variety of yoga styles including Hatha, Ashtanga, Vinyasa Flow, Restorative, Kundalini, and Inyengar, as well as, pranayama and "yoga-lates" Pilates. After returning from Bali, McKall not only worked as a yoga instructor at CrossFit San Diego, but also with private clients throughout southern California.

As the saying goes, McKall had left her heart in Bali. So after teaching yoga and traveling throughout the United States, she decided to return to her new home away from home, in the beautiful Balian Beach.

"Love this place. Great beachfront cabins at reasonable price. Very good food and bar area with delightful staff. Four or five days is probably enough if you are not surfing. It is very good with kids as the pool and lawn area is just in front of the cabins and right on the beach. Tends to be a mix of families staying there along with surfers off all ages. Just a few minutes walk up to the main village where you can eat great local food for 'next to nothing'."

"Stayed for two nights at the best location on beach at the end of the road in Balian. If you are a surfer, then definitely look no further. "

"Friendly staffs all around from the gardeners, housekeepers, and the restaurants. I also met the General Manager, Mr. Darius Sadeli who I believe might know every single in-house guest as he chits chats from one table to another during dinner time. He definitely has a great personality and customer service skilll!"

"Excellent food - if I could suggest, try the Tower Burger! Ahhh-mazing! "

"And don't forget to try the Jitu apple cider!!"

"Will definitely come back before the end of the year! "

"We stayed at the Pondok Pitaya for 5 nights. The hotel has a Balinese feel and is located right on the beach at the end of a road that runs through the local village. A local river also runs into the sea adjacent to the hotel. Balian is very quiet and being a rural area, has no ‘nightlife’ or shops. If you’re not into surfing or yoga, bring a good book ........ or perhaps several – and it can be a very relaxing holiday."

"Balian is approximately 2 hours up the west coast from Legian. It is primarily a surfing spot and this hotel has tended to cater for that market through comfortable but basic rooms for surfers. However it appears to be attempting to expand its appeal and now also has more comfortable accommodation behind the basic beachfront units. We stayed in this newer accommodation (known as the ‘River Suites’). There are Ground and First Floor Levels - and they’ve been constructed of timber recycled from old fishing boats. It’s a clever bit of eco-friendly building work and looks great. Ensuites come with each room and these are open air with privacy walls. Our room was large and airy with good ventilation and A/C if required. No fridge or kettle is provided."

"Yoga is held in the morning and afternoon at the hotel. The classes are conducted in a pavilion in the middle of the well maintained gardens adjacent to the beach. "

"The hotel has a café and bar area and the food is quite good and not expensive. Breakfast was included in our tariff and we had a set choice of a ‘Healthy’, ‘Local’ or ‘Western’ breakfast. We had the ‘Healthy’ each morning and it was fresh and enjoyable. The hotel also has an attractive pool area and sun lounges adjacent to the beach."

"The staff were very friendly and helpful."

"Across the road from the hotel and overlooking the beach is the café, ‘Sushi Surf’. Good sushi; not expensive and a great view of the surf. "

"Just up the hill about 50 metres from ‘Sushi Surf’ is the more traditional ‘Deki’s Warung’. Good local food at very reasonable prices in a friendly casual atmosphere – and again, with a great view of the surf."

"The costs were reasonable and I’m happy to recommend this hotel if you’re going to Balian."

"My stay at Pondok Pitaya was exactly what I had hoped for. The room was a fun, rustic cabana with an outdoor shower and the lovely staff were always eager to help with a warm smile. The food was delicious but if you get bored of the same menu there's a lot of other restaurants and warungs a stone's throw from reception. "

"The surf was a little too strong for my novice skills but Nicky's yoga classes were outstanding! The Vinyasa class was a great balance of deep stretches and muscle strengthening that encompasses the whole body rather than overworking one area. His evening classes were the best way to end the day. Relaxing and restorative. "

"I would definitely recommend this little oasis even if you're not going for the surf or yoga" Website, edited

"Pondok Pitaya is the best hotel experience I’ve had in Bali. Beautiful, friendly staff, right on the beach. It’s perfect for a quiet get-away as the beach and the resort is quiet. The pool is right on the beach for wonderful views all day. The rooms are intricately and ornately detailed. The yoga instructor, Nikki is maybe the best teacher i have ever had, and the classes tend to be small - I never had more than 4 people in a class, which is very nice. The grounds are spacious and it is the perfect peaceful retreat. I was there for three nights and never needed to leave the resort. The restaurant has a large menu however they didn’t have cheese until the last day, which limited the options some. However everyone and everything was great. My bathroom was on the balcony which I did not know about ahead of time but it was just fine. Thank you Pondok Pitaya. " Website, edited

"This place is so amazing, I didn't realize there is a sort of "hidden paradise" in Bali. It suits me, as I wanted to take a break from my hectic life for a while. This place was making a perfect gateway for me. A best place to do Yoga, and the ocean wave is very good for someone who wants to do surfing. This place is Nearby the clean river that connected to the ocean, and also there is a waterfall, too bad it was dry season, so the waterfall was not as beautiful as usualThe room was clean and unique. The garden was very beautiful. The staffs were nice and friendly.Last but not least, the foods are very good. I tried Yellow Curry Chicken, Red Curry Chicken, Fish and Chips (I can taste that they use premium Dori fish), even the ordinary fried rice was very tasty. My toddler (1,5 years) could finish the fried rice all by her self, as she usually not easily to be fed. Very recommended."

I will definitely be back to beautiful Bali and of course to Pondok Pitaya. Thank-you all for this unforgettable experience!"

"I arrived in the middle of the night and woke up in paradise by the sea. Pondok Pitaya was the perfect place for my self-styled solo yoga retreat. The classes were great and Nicky is a lovely, gently humorous and inspiring teacher. Only downside was that the concurrent teachers school kind of took over the sala, the public spaces and the in-house dining options and there was only one, rather than two classes per day. I imagine that could easily be rectified by Nicky holding an early morning class in the outdoors. Like most yogis, I prefer to practise before breakfast and its too late in the day to have breakfast after a 10.30-to-noon class. Small problem and it by no means marred my stay, but Id like to hope the situation could be addressed. I would have rated it higher if there had been an early morning class, or a fruit salad option in the inclusive breakfast menu options (you cant do yoga after bacon and eggs or even nasi goring), and if the hot water in the shower had been fixed when I reported it. " I've been to Pondok Pitaya a few times now. It's a great way to get away from the more crowded parts of Bali and truly relax. The hotel is right on the beach, with healthy food, surfing and yoga. The yoga teacher is fantastic and lead us through a slow yet intense class (all with waves in the background). This is where I come to chill out, read a good book by the pool & take classes. Highly recommend you do the same!Stayed February 2015, traveled with friends "

" I traveled to Balian with my family in February. I am the mother of 4. My husband and eldest son surf and I am an avid yoga buff. My other 3 kids were happy to play in the pool and enjoy the lush open space at the Pondok. I will return,..90 minutes of full attentive yoga by an experienced and warming teacher, followed by a cold coconut shake by the pool. I felt relaxed, healthy and happy. My husband and son surfed 3 times a day, and got professional photos taken from the beach. The kids enjoyed every minute of their Balian life adventure. The Pondok is a fantastic place to stay. It is bamboo and fresh air with a touch of serenity. Do it I highly recommend this amazing friendly hideaway.Stayed February 2015, traveled with family "

" I'm 4 months pregnant. My husband and I knew this might be our last chance to holiday before the baby comes. So we wanted it to be special. Destination? (Easy...) Bali. But this time we want to experience the real face of Bali, not those we usually see in Kuta, Legian, etc.Darius, a good friend since childhood happens to manage a hotel in Balian Beach called "PONDOK PITAYA". He invited us to stay at his place. So we thought why's about 2-hour drive (with traffic time included) from Ngurah Rai airport with great scenic views. But boy...if I was impressed then...the moment we arrived at Pondok Pitaya I couldn't stop saying "". It's (honestly) nothing like the photos posted on their was WAY MORE BEAUTIFUL in real life!!! It's located right at the end of the of the road, touches the Balian you get to eat (delicious & HEALTHY) food in their restaurant with killer view of the sea (and cool surfers) well as staying in beautiful wooden houses with rooftops rooms where you can stargaze, or staying at the River Suite where you have little ponds, garden and passionfruit growing on your porch. It was SO BEAUTIFUL and PEACEFUL!Darius recommended the River Suite and we fell in love at first sight. The room was simple, but it's just so clean, smells good, sweet, homey, cozy and got all the necessary (strategically positioned) ports to plug your electrical stuff as well as air conditioner just in case the weather gets too hot or humid. The room looks more like a little hut and made of boat woods. It's strong and sturdy but apparently it can float on water (in case of flood or tsunami, knock on wood). Anyway, we felt home. The room also feature orthopaedic bed, which again for a pregnant woman with bad back like myself, is very very helpful!Everyone in Balian seems to know each other well, you will feel like youre actually part of the village community. We ended up changing our itinerary so that on the last day we could come back to Balian. Staffs and services are great, the place is filled with beautiful souls! And did I mention the massage???? This lady named Iluh, gave me a prenatal massage on the bale-bale next to the beach and honestly, it was the massage of my life. So therapeutic for the body and the soul. Pondok Pitaya also provides yoga classes, taught by this beautiful kind lady named Bianca. If you feel like morning walk around the villages, you can ask her to show you the way.I did and she showed me this peaceful secluded beach nearby, it was worth it!!When youre there dont forget to try the in-house food and their homemade apple cider "JITU". There are various menu, and Vegetarian friendly. Oh and one last thingMUST DO hiking + waterfall tour! Went to enjoyed this secluded Blah Mantung waterfall, and it was just so serene and breathtaking, all to ourselves!! If you're a coffee fan, you could also visit the little LUWAK COFFEE factory in Pupuan and do some coffee tasting, as well as drink their herbal teas.Overall, my husband and I truly recommended this place. It is far from the hustle and bustle of the modern Bali, but it is worth it, especially if your main purpose of going to Bali is to relax. There are no sellers around the beach so dont worry about being bothered while you sunbathe.Lastly, thank you very much Pondok Pitaya for giving us the experience of our lifethank you for reminding us again the real beautiful face of Bali.Stayed March 2015, traveled as a couple "

" This is a great place to go. It's got everything you could want from a holiday in Bali, without the crowds. The hotel and its amenities (restaurant, pool, gardens, yoga studio) hold absolute prime beachfront position that cannot be beaten.I think that a real standout is their staff. Every single one of them is always smiling and happy. It's amazing, they are genuinely just happy people who will always greet you with warmth and kindness. They all speak very good English, and nothing is too much trouble.Beachfront rooms are traditional Indonesian in style, spacious, clean and have fans - more than enough because you have the sea breeze keeping you cool and comfortable. There are some brand new air conditioned rooms out the back too, they look really nice.Restaurant has a chilled vibe, looking straight out onto the surf, with really good food - extensive menu selection of Indonesian and western food.Pool that overlooks the surf, with plenty of sunloungers and shade. New yoga studio overlooking the beach is pretty cool. Two classes per day, or you can just go in there anytime and do your thing. Sprawling, well kept gardens and grass area, with some huts that are perfect for chilling out in and watching the ocean.Balian is a cool little surf town, like stepping back in time, but in a very good way. Away from the maddening crowds and ridiculous over-development and hype of Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu etc, it is one of the last slices of real paradise in Bali. Well worth the couple of hours drive to come up. It's a very chilled village, not the place if you want loud night-time entertainment into the small hours of the morning, this is a place to relax, slow down and enjoy life. There is a really good, consistent wave right out the front of Pondok Pitaya. Balian is a semi-secret spot, which is a good thing, because it means less crowds and more chilled vibes. Just don't go telling everyone about it!Make sure you catch a Balian sunset sitting at the restaraunt or the pool with Bintang in hand. It's something to behold. Many people come back to Pondok Pitaya year after year. Once you have been here, it's not hard to see why. You'll probably end up as one of them!Stayed March 2015, traveled solo "

" I'm tired of crowded touristy places, though they are usually touristy for a reason. But when there's quieter spots with equally beautiful view, I'd choose the latter. Pondok Pitaya in Balian did it for me. A bit far out of Bali's airport, the ambiance and scenery are worth the distance, totally. Pondok Pitaya has direct access to the beach, great sunset view (awesome, because I'm not keen on getting up just for sunrise), natural-looking bungalows and rooms with recycled boat wood (+1 for the environment!) and lots of activities offered.Stayed February 2015, traveled with friends "

" I have just finished 45 days in Balian and loved every minute of it. Everyday the surf is almost perfect if not perfect and the smiles and vibes throughout the village makes you feel way more welcome than at home. When you step onto the property of Pondok Pitaya you are first stunned in awe with how perfectly situated you are in front of great waves with the most immaculate landscaping and ocean front pool. The staff at Pondok Pitaya go over and above what they can do to accommodate you and makes everyone feel extremely relaxed. There landscapers are absolutely incredible. Any and all meals that I have had were excellent and my last go to meal was the Chicken Schnitzel sandwhich was incredible and you never have to worry about a shortage of drinks at there beautiful bar which can accommodate from a simple beer to some fancy western cocktail umbrella style drinks... they have you covered. If anybody out there needs a solid family friendly resort this is it! Nothing but solid words of recommendation to anyone out there looking into booking here for your next Bali experience. The smiles, the giggles, the great waves...Im already missing this place. TylerStayed May 2015, traveled solo "
