Polwaththa is a hidden nature retreat on the outskirts of Kandy in Sri Lanka launched by Polwaththa Eco Lodges and the Forest Healing Foundation.
Milly is a yoga practitioner and teacher. She is also an artist: a painter, dancer, musician and student of life. On the mat, Milly is predominantly an ashtanga yoga practitioner, first spending years assisting under her teacher and then internationally teaching in centres and ashrams - she shares her own asana practice, as well as vinyasa, yin and yoga nidra. Her intention in teaching yoga is to create a space to direct students to look inside themselves, to connect to the vital source of life and discover the light and truth that is our own being.

"Exceeded my expectations!"
Polwaththa Eco Lodge was exceeding my expectations in so many ways. It's not "just another Yoga Retreat" - the Lodge is amazing, you get a feeling of community but also have a lot of space to be by yourself, if you choose to. The cabins are simple, but clean and nice, located in the middle of the forest - you can hear all the jungle noises and really experience it. The Yoga was very good for all levels. Also the owners are amazingly interesting people - all their projects, the reforestation, how the include and strengthen the local community, the spice Factory - it's really coming from their heart. The employers are super nice and helpful. The food is also very good. The cooking class was a lot of fun.
I really enjoyed every second of it and recommend it with all my heart!

Alles in allem sehr gute Erfahrung!

"Great introduction"
I am new to Yoga and meditation. Toby explained everything in a style that I could understand and it inspired me to carry one. In the 3 days he covered a number of yoga, meditation and breathing techniques. The accomodation was basic, very clean and perfect for the cost of the retreat. The food was plentiful. All the safe very friendly and helpful

"Amazing experience, beautiful people, beautiful place! "
This place when over all kind of expectations. You will realise how much care they put on everything, everyone here has a mition or a roll that gave you a super valuable experience! The environment and nature came by default, you are in the middle of the jungle, but trust me, this feel for the first time in Sri Lanka, real and local, down to earth, simple but with so much care and details. Thank you Tobi for an amazing practice, for taking the patient and work to make something that make sense in time and space, thank you Prassana for your knowledge and funny time, impossible to get bored with you, thank you Namal for your care, attention and sweetness in your work, thank you Nel for showing your work and your purpose! Thank you Malani for the smiling and fun cooking class! Thank you all the team involved, we leave full in many ways ❤️✨! You can see how great is a place, because people who make this place are happy here!
Just to add, food was always amazing and a lot, in case someone is wondering! Local sourced, organic, natural, delicious 🤤
Muchas gracias 😊🙏🏽

"Wonderful retreat! Highly recommend"
What a wonderful experience! To be in the jungle, with great like-minded people, practising yoga every day and eating delicious food. The staff were so welcoming and helpful. Our yoga teacher was actually Sienna but she wasn’t on the chosen list. She was amazing and lead sound baths after each evening yin practise. It was also wonderful to see the jungle and all the great work Nihal and Nils have done. The spice factory was wonderful and I couldn’t help but buy lots to take home. The trek to the waterfall and cooking lesson were excellent additions. As a solo traveller (or if you’re with a friend/partner), I highly recommend this retreat!

"Best yoga retreat in the middle of a jungle"
The yoga retreat at Polwaththa Retreat was just amazing! You are living in the middle of the jungle, the food is so good and definitely fills your belly after great yoga classes with Freya. Everyone who is working there has just such an open heart and would help you with everything. We even ended up booking an other trek with them because we just liked it so much. Huge recommendation!

"Most amazing retreat experience! "
The team at the Polwaththa Lodge was simply incredible - the hospitality was unmatched - from the kitchen staff, to the guides to the owners everyone did their absolute best to make our experience exceptional.
The lodges are spread out so over the property that one feels like the only one in the jungle, the yoga shala is a nice 10 minute walk into the jungle as well so for every session it was pure serenity. our teacher Flavia was covering for Freya and she was such a perfect fit for our group of four girls consisting of 2 more advanced and two beginner yogis - she really took her time in every session to give us all the comfort and support needed and thanks to her i think we all now have an even better connection to our practice!
The hike to the waterfall and through the villages and also the cooking classes were absolute highlights and the food we got to eat every evening was simply amazing - you are really spoiled for choice at the lodge!!
I can only recommend this place to anyone traveling through the area around Kandy - no matter if for an actual retreat or simply for a unique accommodation.
Dear Polwaththa Team - I WILL BE BACK!!

I had a wonderful experience here, the staff were all so lovely and welcoming. Everything we needed was catered for. The food was amazing, and we looked forward to all the meals. The yoga shala is in a perfect place surrounded by trees, and made the yoga sessions even more enjoyable. Had a great stand in teacher called Flavia. I extended my stay after the yoga retreat to do a a hike in knuckles, it was very well organised and accommodated last minute. Would come back again!

"The best part of my trip to Sri Lanka!"
The team here are really passionate, hardworking, and open. I felt taken care of from the beginning to end. Their mission to reforest the jungle and empower local people is also very inspiring. I loved the cabins, the yoga, the food, and the activities, it was like the summer camp of my dreams and an oasis in my solo trip! Best of all, the other people at my retreat and I really bonded and some of us went on to share some more adventures in Sri Lanka together.

I had an incredible time at this retreat. I shared a room with two other lovely women. They kept us entertained the entire time we were there with countless activities and 4 hours of yoga per day. Freya was very creative with her routines which made it very fun and challenging! The entire team was always happy to help. The waterfall is beautiful and I couldn't have asked for a better group! Food was also great, always buffet style and they make sure to accommodate everyone's allergies etc.

"A full immersion in the Sri Lankan jungle"
I had a fantastic experience at Polwaththa!
The location is amazing, you feel yourself at peace in the jungle, falling asleep and waking up at the gentle sound of the surrounding nature.
The cabins are cozy and clean. The staff extremely kind and welcoming.
I loved the morning Hatha-Yoga classes with Courtnay, as well as the late afternoon restorative yoga ones. Courtnay has been an amazing instructor, focusing every day on different areas of the body and offering a good variation of poses every day, as well as some time of meditation to focus on your inner self.
Food portions were always generous (the breakfasts are AMAZING) and the hiking activity very nice. I loved discovering more about the Forest Healing foundation project, even though we couldn’t plant a tree because of the drought.
I hope to come back some day, and visit this wonderful green oasis again. It was hard to leave and go back to the city! I’m still dreaming of the magical sounds of the jungle.

"Perfect introduction to Yoga"
So many things to like - no, LOVE - about our retreat:
Freya was an outstanding, sympathetic instructor who related to everyone from very advanced (young yoga instructors in training) to total novices iof mature years (me!). She taught a variety of styles and was never without her smile. Her experience working with visually impaired students was evident in her ability to describe what we should be doing and she had ‘work-arounds’ for those unable to balance on one leg or who lacked the flexibility to get into more advanced positions.
The Jungle - a beautiful place with therapeutic qualities of its own.
The staff - you can feel the affection they have for one another and the enjoyment they get from sharing their space with the guests
The food - delicious and healthy
The balance of activities and rest - there was lots to do apart from the yoga (jungle trek, cooking, visit to the spice factory, tree planting, discussion about Buddhism) but no pressure to do anything more than we wanted to.
Polwaththa has a vision and is on a journey. Everyone is hungry to learn and the leaders are continually investing in new facilities, new skills and the local area.
If you want aircon and luxury this is not the place for you, but if you want authenticity and a feeling of being part of something amazing then, in my opinion, this place cannot be beaten!

"Peaceful, instructive and full of love "
I completely fell in the charm of this beautiful place full of even more beautiful people. This retreat was exactly what I needed, when I needed it. It is a local, authentic, environmental friendly and sustainable buisness. I appreciated that they took the time to explain to us everything that they do outside of the yoga retreat : reforesting projet, spice factory, … there is so much work and love happening there, I was amazed!
I also really enjoyed the yoga classes, Freya is a wonderful teacher. She changed the lessons everyday and was able to adapt the class to all levels, taking the time to correct us and help us when we needed it. The hike to the waterfall and the cooking class were also super nice experiences !
I can only recommend this place. The hardest thing was to leave, I hope to be back soon.

The location is amazing right in the earth of the Sri Lankan jungle. It is a family business and Raimon’s father with his wife, son, future daughter in law and amazing stuff are doing an impressive job! This is what is called a social entrepreneurship journey starting small but can already see the wonderful direction is going and I wish them all the best in keep succeeding!
You guys have touched my heart in many ways, keep up the wonderful job <3
Overall, it was amazing sharing 4 wonderful days with 5 other guests doing several activities together and especially mornings and evenings yoga with Freya at the Shala in the middle of the jungle with a breathtaking lake view! It was the really added value!

The location is incredible. In the heart of the jungle, you walk everyday in peace and nature. The team was amazing (thank you Prasad and Prasanna!), and everybody else that make it very special. The yoga classes were beautiful, the walk to shala it’s already the start of the practice and we were so blessed to have Nicky teaching us, such an amazing teacher and beautiful human. The place is beautiful, situated in the midst of the jungle with amazing people that are running the place! The yoga classes were great with focus on grounding effects on the body and mind. As there was only 3 of us it made the whole experience very intimate and cosy. We went hiking to a stunning waterfall and on our last day we got to plant a tree as part of their forest foundation. So it's just a great experience and also the food is just absolutely delicious!

"The best retreat choice if you care where your money goes :)"
I am so happy I came across this place when I was researching yoga options in Sri Lanka, often I am sceptical towards retreats as organisers might not share the same values as me and I want to make sure my funds go to a business that's aligned with the values I hold. Sustainability and community focus is very important to me. This place is not just a yoga retreat; this is where they care about local community and the nature around them! They make sure they provide fair wages and jobs to female workers :)
All of the above is very important for me and it was uplifting to see there are places that don't exploit local economy. They are doing everything they can to live in symbiosis with the community and support however they can!
I loved the whole concept and all the activities. I always say I have a love/hate relationship with yoga, but our instructor Freya was just perfect for me.
From the first minute I arrived and jumped into the hammock outside of our cabin I was able to be in a moment and engage with the beauty around me! Was great to learn about the local culture, some lovely recipes and I really enjoyed our walk through the village and to waterfalls!
Their whole team and dogs are so amazing! We had lots of genuine fun time! It was also incredible to visit their spice factory and see how everything is processed!
It was so lovely to spend the time with the other attendees, we had such a great group!
I also made a new friend for life, so that is a bonus:)

The Polwaththa Yoga Retreat was a great great experience for me. Lying in a hammock while u listen to the jungle sounds gives u a great feeling of peace. Perfect place to calm down, release stress and just live in the moment.
the food was excellent, (coffee was from their own beans and so tasty).

"A wonderful magical & memorable experience"
I had high hopes for this retreat- as an experienced yogi, and as I was taking my partner (a beginner to yoga) along with me. Everything about it was truly beautiful. The care from all the staff is second to none. In such a short space of time we felt so welcomed and part of the wonderful community. Totally immersed in nature, well fed with the BEST food we had whilst in Sri Lanka and thoroughly inspired from being led expertly by Freya in the yoga classes. Four days was filled with such rich experiences that we will treasure forever.
We would go back in a heart beat.

We spontaneously decided to join the Polwaththa Yoga Retreat on our journey through Sri Lanka and it was the best decision we could have made! We met amazing people, the Lodge was super nice with huts directly in the jungle where you can see monkeys and other animals and we absolutely loved the Yoga sessions in the Shala with Freya who is super lovely and really cares about creating a calm and safe atmosphere for everyone. In general the team of the Polwaththa Eco Lodge is very lovely, we did a hike as a group to some amazing waterfalls and had a really fun day. Also the food is amazing, we really recommend the cooking class where you get to know how to cook a jackfruit curry. Definitely a must do when you’re in Sri Lanka!

" Polwaththa Yoga retreat"
We booked online for a 3 night / 4 day all inclusive yoga retreat at Polwaththa Yoga and Meditation retreat. The booking process was easy and the cummunication and joining instructions were clear. (The 1hr bus trip from Kandy to Digana is a great experience).
As soon as we arrived at the retreat we were well taken care of. Everything was well organized and the staff spoke good English. We could instantly relax.
The accommodation is clean and beautifully simple. Our cabin was built into the hillside with a veranda on stilts - the views and the sounds were five stars. There was an intamacy with the jungle that would have been lost if we had stayed anywhere else. Take mosquito repellent (this applies anywhere in Sri Lanka)
The yoga practise suited us perfectly. The practice takes place at the yoga shala which is a roofed open area. Special.
The hike to the waterfall was very informative. It wasn't a big day by hiking standards but in the tropical heat that is no bad thing. One of the highlights was swimming in the small gap between the waterfall and the rock. A GoPro selfie moment of a lifetime!
The food was delicious and plentiful. We opted for local dishes which were exactly that. The cooking lesson used ingredients from the jungle that we had seen on our hike.
Planting a tree on the last day hit home the importance of the work these guys are doing and of the magical experience that they have managed to create. I highly recommend it.

"Great retreat in the middle of the jungle for all levels"
The “Yoga Shala” is in the middle of the jungle an 5-10 mins away from the lodges. It was a great quick walk up to the yoga lesson. Our yoga teacher Johanna did a great job and it was easy to follow as beginner.
The lodge itself is running by warm-hearted Neil who plants trees all over the place, runs a spice farm, grows vegetables, sells some clothes - all eco and fair produced.
All the people working there seem very happy and were very friendly. One day we had a hike to a nearby waterfall. Our guide Charles knew a low about the plants and we could try fresh cacao beans, saw clove and nutmeg growing etc. on the way to the waterfall.
The other day we had a cooking class and the food was amazing! The food in general was amazing. Everything was prepared fresh and we had no dish twice. Even the breakfast was different every day. Really appreciated that.
Can totally recommended this retreat - also as beginner.

"A little paradise hidden in the jungle "
Nihal and his family have created a showcase of eco tourism. The family and the team are extremely friendly and the service was excellent. The yoga by Freya was heartwarming, very professional and I could improve a lot in this few days. Thank you so much! The shala is a dream with a view in the forest and on a lake. Nel planted a tree with us - which was such a great experience. The hike to the waterfalls was real fun! The guide was professional, funny and showed us a lot in the nature. The local cooking class with the women from the village was authentic und so much fun. The food in general is great, fresh and local. A Highlight for me was the spice factory with was founded by Nihal and is located close to the lodge. It is a social project to support the local community. Don’t miss this!

"A perfect few days in the jungle"

Freya is fantastisch!

"Beyond my expectations and the highlight of my trip so far!"
Everything was just perfect: The quality of the yoga classes, each participant of the group, the accommodation and the food (delicious and best food on my trip!!). Also the nature and the views are absolutely stunning and even the monkeys are among the best behaving monkeys I have seen so far! Freya and the entire team have been wonderful and very welcoming hosts during this retreat!! The time flew so quickly in this wonderful setting and warm atmosphere, which was the only thing I regret…

"More than yoga, a full Sri Lankan experience! "
Polwaththa
This yoga retreat was truly an amazing experience. It is held in the jungle outside of Digana which is near Kandy. It is very much a nature preserve and a eco-experience, with twice daily yoga, incredible and delicious - and ridiculously plentiful! - food, a beautiful trek to a waterfall through the jungle, learning about jackfruit, nutmeg, birds and deer, the option to plant a tree to help with reforestation, a visit to a small shop employing local women to purchase locally grown spices and handmade clothes, bags and more made by locals and so much more! The staff are wonderful and helpful who will make your stay comfortable and memorable.
Freya is a wonderful yoga teacher and her voice is beautiful to listen to as she calls out and instructs the yoga moves. How fun to do yoga with monkeys in the jungle just 10 m away from us as we stretched high above Lake Victoria on a beautiful wooden platform.
It’s not a luxurious place - instead, it’s a place with heart and soul in the midst of the jungle. A one of a kind experience.
I highly recommend it!

"Wow! "
Thank you soo much to the amazing team! I could not have find a retreat that was more suiting to me than this one. So aligned with Nature. Being remote allowed me to connect to my spiritual and physical bodies way more than in other places in the country.
The food is just amazing. They always have many options, and it is always really fresh.
The cabins are lovely, super clean and right in the forest.
I loved all of it!!

"What a dream! "
We were so well looked after by the team here during such a scary time in Sri Lanka! That aside, this yoga retreat is worth every penny/rupee. The jungle setting, the mix of challenging Ashtanga/vinyasa and yin classes, the friendly and funny team, the food - it was all perfect. The tuktuk drive up to the lodge (as the last 1 km can't take cars) is also not to be missed!

"Special time in the jungle "
The yoga retreat is set at Polwaththa eco-lodges which has a long history of community work, reforestation and hospitality. The staff are wonderful and so is the entire experience. From the accommodation being individual huts spread across the property to the food which is cooked fresh every day with local produce like the locally grown coffee. Coming here has opened up a wonderful new side of Sri Lanka and allowed us to connect with ourselves through the fantastic yoga sessions and with nature through the stunning environment and the program offered during the retreat.

"The best decision I made in Sri Lanka"
My stay at Polwatha Eco Lodges was everything I could have asked for and more. I came for the Yoga retreat and ended up booking to stay an extra night.
The friendly staff, talented yoga teacher, beautiful community and incredible food would have been enough, but staying in the forest was a true experience. Falling asleep with the crickets and waking up with the birds. Finding incredible wildlife and vegetation everywhere you look and having the feeling of gratitude for my low impact stay, due to the eco-friendly practices that are in place here. Solar panels to heat the showers, water refill stations, rechargeable torches, composting and so much more.
Getting to know the staff here has been an honour and the community work that is happening at Polwatha is truly inspiring.
I will be back

This retreat is incredible. The staff are so friendly, welcoming and make you feel part of the family. The location is just beautiful and you are surrounded by jungle and nature. Yoga with Freya was everything I love about yoga- very inclusive and non-judgemental with opportunities to work hard in Vinyasa, but also a fantastic spot in the jungle for meditation and Yin. The additional activities included a cooking class and trek to a stunning secluded waterfall. There is amazing space to explore the other things Polwathatha has to offer - a spice factory and a re- forestation project. Also the food is AMAZING - delicious Sri Lankan dishes for breakfast lunch and dinner! Thank you so much to the whole team, we miss it already!!

"Perfect short-stay yoga retreat!"
I highly recommend the Polwaththa Retreat! The food is amazing, the location in the middle of the jungle perfect to unwind and the whole staff caring and absolutely lovely. Even more, Polwaththa also tries (and succeeds) to make a lasting impact on the local people and environment.

Amazing experience, this place has such a special vibe and concept and everyone is just lovely! I enjoyed the sweet and clean cabin with its hammock on the porch as well as the fabulous food they serve.
Freya’s yoga lessons are wonderful, powerful vinyasas and very calming meditation and yin classes :) I loved the hike and cooking lesson where Charles taught us so much about regional plants as well as the chat when Nihal shared his knowledge about Buddhism with us.
And we all got a lot of helpful tips for the following journey.
Huge thank you to the whole team! <3

"Great retreat, I highly recommend it"
Beautiful space in nature. Really great professional welcoming staff. Friendly, supportive and environmentally conscientious owners. The food portions are very generous, they make their own coffee! They had wonderful fruit salads. Rogen is a great yoga teacher - I was definitely challenged. The space was clean, bathroom modern. There were monkeys and puppies ❤️ I was lucky enough to go while it was very quiet so was able to really relax. They were flexible and accommodated my non-yoga friend last minute and handled a small health scare really professionally and considerately. I strongly recommend visiting if you can.

"Hearty Soul Food for body and mind"
Polwaththa is a wonderful, grassroots community initiative, set up and run by people who care deeply about the area.
The retreat is a great value package with interesting activities and lots of time for yoga, meditation, and relaxation.
As well as being a lovely place to stay with the sound of the jungle and a great view of the lake, the team are incredibly welcoming and your every need is catered to. There is genuine care for the local environment and for the local community. You can see that your money is going to good use and your travel experience is making a difference.

"Most amazing experience "
This retreat was an amazing experience . The location was beautiful , the staff was so sweet and always ready to help and the yoga was the best. I learnt so much in these 4 days and improved a lot. Everything they offer in this package is more than worth the little price ! Also the organization has an amazing vision that is all about caring for the forest and doing everything from an ethical point of view . I would highly recommend going there ! Not only for the yoga but also for the location ,people and the homegrown amazing spices they grow and sell there .

The tour guide showing us around the village explaining about all the herbs was just an amazing add to the overall really comfortable experience. All the green around us, the good yoga classes and delicious food made us feel so sadisfied. Thanks for making this happen to the Beautiful couple owning the ground. :) ps: on top of all that: there are no muscitos!! :D

"Amazing spot in the jungle very close to nature"
This is one of the most amazing spots I've been to. In the middle of Sri Lanka jungle, no noises from cars or towns. I was about to say that this place is amazingly quiet but that's actually not true. It's full of amazing nature noises from birds, monkeys, gekkos and chipmunks.
The bungalows are simple but clean. The best thing is the location. Surrounded by trees, trees and even more trees.
The food was very good and more than enough, veggie and vegan options available. But be aware of the garlic ;-)
The service was excellent. Everyone was very helpful and friendly.
The yoga Shala was an amazing spot, far away from any possible disturbance but still in the middle of nature.
I enjoyed my stay and would definitely go back.
Highly recommend to all jungle and nature fans.

"worth the long trip"
It's a little hidden serene and peaceful place off the busy Sri Lankan cities. Arriving with a stressed mind, I could calm down immediately with good food, exercise and surround myself with amazingly friendly people who looked after our all wellbeing. The team is very welcoming, knowledgeable and funny. Even when I got injured, I was looked after superb, no infection, nothing. It healed within no time.

"Fantastic experience at a very affordable price! "
Set in a gorgeous forest in the mountains of Digana, this retreat was an absolute treat and fantastic value for money. The owners and staff were incredibly kind and accommodating and the instructor was super lovely and very knowledgeable. Honestly, I could not have hoped for a better experience. The food was TO DIE FOR and arguably my favourite aspect as It was plentiful and delicious! It is definitely immersive and a great getaway from the hussle and bustle of city living - I'm talking very limited Wi-Fi, cold showers and quaint wooden cabins where gheckos, frogs, monkeys and wild deers are common sights. Personally I loved this and felt these were really positive features of the experience. I would not hesitate to return and/or recommend to friends.

"One of my best Sri Lankan experiences! Highly reccommend!!!"
I absolutely loved my stay as a whole, I felt pampered in the heart of a beautiful rainforest, the food was exceptional, everybody was friendly, and Remon, the son of the owner, popped in every day (sometimes twice) to ask if we have everything we need, and did his best to ensure we were all happy and settled in. We got tea, coffee, fruits whenever we asked, and bought loads of locally-made souvenirs from the community shop. This was definitely a highlight of my Sri Lankan adventure, and I’ll be back for sure!

"Amazing place to stay for yoga, jungle, eco travel experienc"
The whole package was great: The yoga was amazing, the room simple but served the purpose of an ecological-oriented accommodation, amazing food, tree planting and even an organic garden. The offered trekking was great and everyone was welcoming, gave advise and made the stay wonderful. They really take the concept of sustainable tourism serious! Would go there again any time!
