Come to this haven to relax and focus on your own well-being. This retreat focuses on improving your well-being through yoga and Ayurveda in a completely natural environment. You will have daily yoga, meditation, and Ayurvedic treatments, in addition to healthy fresh nutritious food and Ayurvedic herbal medicines. You will be cared for by a team of experienced yoga teachers, Ayurvedic doctors, and therapists. You will leave feeling lighter in body, mind, and spirit!
During this retreat, you will be staying in a standard room at Plantation Villa. The villa is a colonial home, approximately 150 years old. It was the house of the village chief, which then converted to consist of a living room, dinning hall, veranda, and open living area, all are newly renovated.
The property consists of the main villa and the lodge, each is about two minutes walking distance from each other. The lodge is the original house of the first occupier of this colonial treasure. With time, their son built a bigger home to house his expanding family. This is the villa.
The villa consists of eight rooms (two suite rooms and six deluxe rooms), the dining hall, lounge, verandas, and spa. Meanwhile, the lodge consists of six standard rooms and an open veranda. Both the villa and the lodge were renovated in the end of 2015 to 2016, and are decorated in contemporary colonial style in keeping with the age of the property, and to meet the guests' comforts and modern needs at the same time. Rooms are beautifully completed with luxury bathrooms.
All of their standard rooms are in the lodge, and they all open to a beautiful open veranda. The rooms and bathrooms are completed beautifully to include modern guest requirements. The rooms have fans but they are not air conditioned.
During this retreat, Plantation Villa will work with you to help achieve optimum results during your stay. This is a space where life in nature, fresh air, nutrition, and herbal medicines are combined with mindfulness techniques of yoga and meditation with personalized service.
Each guest has an initial consultation on their first day. This consultation gathers a holistic understanding of the guest covering physical ailments, areas for stress for the mind, lifestyle, and wellness objectives or requirements. You will have a minimum of four daily Ayurvedic treatments, with all types of treatments included. Some guests would also be doing walks in the village in the morning or having a swim before the treatment.
You will also be able to join their afternoon activities, which includes walks in the plantation, activities in the plantation, tree planting, cookery classes, talks with the yoga teacher or doctor etc., discussions about Ayurveda, yoga philosophy, or mindfulness, and vegetable or fruit picking activities, and rubber tapping or paddy harvesting during seasons.
As an eco-friendly retreat center, Plantation Villa works tirelessly for the sustainment of the environment and the village people. The center employs local staff and funds numerous village community establishments, such as the village temples and schools. The center supports its own charity, The Metta Trust, and guests get to have an opportunity to join in the charity activities, supporting the community, environment, and wildlife.

Ishara is the founder and owner of Plantation Villa. She is a regular meditation practitioner whose practice has changed her life. She has practiced and studied Buddhism and meditation over the last eight years. With an inspiring life story, Ishara helps explore the world of meditation through an explanation of the mind, its nature and habits, to overcome obstacles and allow the inherent sense of fulfilment that we all have to shine forth.
Dr. Nishan Jayasundara is the in-house Cancer Specialist. He completed a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery (BAMS) at the University of Colombo and Institute of Indigenous Medicine and completed his internship at the National Ayurveda Teaching Hospital. He also obtained special training in Sri Lankan traditional medicine from one of the most renowned indigenous medicine gurus in the country. He represents Sri Lanka at international cancer research conferences such as the WIN (Worldwide Innovative Network in Developing Precision Cancer Medicine) Symposium and World Cancer Congress.
Bernardo has been teaching and studying yoga for over a decade. He has been in contact with different teachers and schools, from western and Indian traditional approaches. For the last years, his studies were more in line with the Krishnamacharya tradition, with a focus on the usage of yoga techniques as a therapy tool to restore the wellbeing of the human system. He is a certified Hatha yoga teacher, Vedic healing chants teacher from the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram - India, has studied yoga with the Mohan family from the Krishnamacharya tradition. He is also a certified Ayurveda therapist.
Dr. Erandi Gunathilaka is the Chief Ayurvedic Physician. She holds a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery (BAMS) at the University of Colombo, Institute of Indigenous Medicine and completed her internship at the National Ayurveda Teaching Hospital. Erandi specializes in General Practice, Gynecology, Sub-Fertility (both male and female) and Menopause. She is also qualified in Psychological Counselling focusing on Ayurvedic Diet & Nutrition, Fertility Concerns, Stress, and Anxiety. She also works closely with Dr. Nishan on his research work about treating cancer with Ayurveda.
Dr. Ruwanka graduated from University of Colombo, Institute of Indigenous Medicine, securing a first-class in Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery. Due to his outstanding academic performance, he was hired by the university to work as a demonstrator. During his late university years as a student, he developed an interest in a field where other Ayurveda practitioners rarely focus on - surgery! He specializes in treating anorectal diseases such as fistla-in-ano, hemorrhoids, anal fissures, and also fluent in Leech Therapy to treat several conditions: varicose veins, glaucoma, etc.
Sarath Vaidya is an indigenous medical practitioner, representing the 21st generation of doctors in the lineage of KottayawaththaVeda tradition. The lineage has a rich history of Vaidyas who have served the kings in Sri Lanka. He studied indigenous medicine for 18 years under his uncle, Vaidya Acharya RanhamiRanbanda (1928-2015), one of the most renowned physicians and a guru that lived in Sri Lanka. Firmly rooted in traditional values and high moral conduct, his approach to treating patients, preparing medicine and using them in healing is comprising of ancient rituals (methodologies).
Dr. Chathurika Harischandra graduated as a Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery from the Institute of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo. During her internship, she worked in two hospitals: the National Ayurveda Teaching Hospital in Colombo and the District Ayurveda Hospital in Beliatta, followed by her research module at Bandaranayaka Memorial Ayurveda Research Institute in Nawinna. Dr. Chathurika studied "Gedi-vana-pilika", one of the branches of Sri Lankan Indigenous Medicine that deals with the treatment of Ulcers and Tumors under the apprenticeship of Vaidyacharya Premasiri.
This retreat will take place in a property located in a small village called Nehinna, 80 kilometers away from the capital city, Colombo. The village is rural and has a traditional community feel. The retreat center property itself is a 30-acre plantation of rubber, coconut, cinnamon, and black pepper. The villa is surrounded by nature, and is a habitat for rare local and migrant birds, butterflies, and a plethora of tropical flora and fauna.
They have an open yoga shala where yoga and meditation classes, and Buddhist poojas take place.They specialize in Ayurveda which is an ancient art of healing the body and mind through nutrition, relaxation, and herbal treatments.

During this retreat, you will be served three daily Ayurvedic meals, consisting of healthy organic meals from the garden. Plantation Villa follows a farm-to-plate policy where majority of the food they serve you come from their own organic gardens. Free from the artificial preservatives, coloring, and pesticides, all meals on site are homemade from healthy and fresh ingredients.
The hotel gardens consist of a paddy field, an organic vegetable or fruit garden, and a spice and herb garden. Anything that is not picked straight from their own organic gardens is sourced locally and ethically so that quality of the food is not compromised. Plantation Villa's doctor has reviewed their menus and ensured they are nutritionally balanced. Their meals are mainly vegetarian, and gluten and sugar free.
Once a week, they serve fish or chicken, as many of their western guests seem to struggle to maintain a vegetarian diet long term. Guests are invited to join in on harvesting activities during seasons or learn about their favorite dishes through Ayurvedic healthy cookery demonstrations and go picking the ingredients from the ground. The complete experience encourages a more hands-on approach to wellness and promotes changes to unhealthy lifestyle choices and habits for good.

Plantation Villa recommends this trip over the trip to Pinnawella Elephant Orphanage, where they have heard mixed reviews about how the animals are treated. This is an opportunity to see elephants in their own natural habitat. Holding the largest population of elephants in Sri Lanka, you are almost guaranteed to see elephants there.
This is an ancient cave temple with a natural forest displaying some amazing Sri Lankan art on the rock.
Plantation Villa works with a company working with whale conservation in Sri Lanka. It is an early morning start but totally worth the experience.
Other than the activities above, you can go meditate, swim, bird watching, or sign up for some activities organized by the resort, including Ayurvedic barbeques, outdoor dining evenings, or dance or singing performances by local talent or celebrations of local festivities.
On arrival, you will be met by an Ayurvedic doctor for a consultation to assess your current mind and body status, and to understand any ailments or illnesses you are suffering from. He will then develop a treatment program for you including daily spa treatments and herbal medicines.
Your program will include Panchakarma treatments which is a complete detoxification of your body and mind. It helps remove the nidhana or root causes of many illnesses by removing toxins from the body. The body is then treated with herbal medicines to nourish, heal, and rejuvenate. If you are healthy and do not have any ailments, your treatments and herbal medicines will be according to ailments you are prone to given your physical constitution and family genetics.
Daily Ayurveda treatments include a minimum of four treatments. You are entitled to all types of treatments so if there is anything specific you want to try, please discuss with the doctor. Below are some of the treatments offered.
Body, head, foot, and face massages are administered by the specialist therapists using medicated herbal oils. The oil used and the level of intensity given to different areas of the body is varied according to the guest's body type and doshas.
Regular oil massages delays the aging process. It loosens the deep-seated toxins from joints and tissues, and releases them into system where they are eliminated, and helps to nourish, strengthen, and lubricate the joints. It makes the joints resilient to wear and tear. Besides this, the accumulated toxins from skin are also released to give healthy and clearer skin.
This is an eye treatment using medicated oils or aloe to help revive the eyes and eliminate eye infections and diseases.
Plantation Villa provides Panchakarma treatments which are a therapeutic way of eliminating toxic elements from the body. The body is then treated to balance out the doshas through external therapies using herbal oils and herbal packs, and internally through herbal medicine and diet.
Plantation Villa does require a minimum 21 night stay to administer Panchakarma because they need to prepare the body (Purva Karma) prior to treatments and then normalize the body afterwards.
This is a rejuvenating therapy, massaging the body with hot cotton boluses, made up of a combination of herbal leaves, flowers, and spices. Herbs and massage strokes are chosen according to your dosha. The herbal plants are then warmed and tied into a muslin cloth before being massaged over the body.
Pinda Sweda helps to rejuvenate, strengthen, and nourish the body. The body perspires, allowing the heat and herbs to penetrate deep into the skin. The treatment provides deep relaxation, improves blood circulation, increases suppleness, and removes joint stiffness and swelling, helping to relieve arthritis.
This is achieved through a relaxing technique in which warmed oil is poured over a clients forehead for an extended period of time. Shirodhara is traditionally used to calm the nerves, harmonize vata constitutions, restore the nerves, release stored emotions, and purify the mind. In Ayurvedic medicine, it is considered an important tool in the pursuit of higher states of consciousness.
Shirodhara has been traditionally shown to help with fatigue, mental exhaustion, anxiety, insomnia, some mental disorders, headache, excessive thinking, nervousness, and many other conditions commonly affecting persons in today's active lifestyle.
Ayurvedic steam bath is a special treatment in which leaves of medicinal plants are simmered and the body is exposed to the resulting steam. It is good in flushing out impurities from the body, reducing obesity as well as excess fat, and in the treatment of skin diseases.
The treatment removes skin acne by cleansing and dilating the pores and washing out accumulation. By inhalation of steam, the respiratory system is cleaned, makes it breathe easily. It helps to slow down aging process and drooping of the skin by stimulating it.
