Program

Day 1: Arrival in Paro - Thimphu

Meeting Bhutan representative and transfer to Thimphu. The Capital of Bhutan (2320 meters / 7656 feet, 65 kilometers / 1.5 to 2 hours), is a unique combination of modern development and ancient traditions. Home to civil servants, expatriates, and monks, it maintains a strong national character in its architectural style. Check in to the hotel. Evening meditation; overnight at hotel.

Day 2: Thimphu

Gentle Yoga and Meditation followed by breakfast

Visits to Thimphu landmarks: Memorial Chorten - Tashichho Dzong - Kuensel Phodrang (Buddha Point) - Changangkha Lhakhang (Monastery) - Drupthob Goemba / Zilukha Nunnery National library - Indigenous hospital, Institute for Zorig Chusum (Traditional Art & Craft School)

Day 3: Thimphu - Wangdue

Gentle Yoga and Meditation followed by breakfast

Drive to Punakha (1200 meters / 3936 feet, 77 kilometers / 3 to 3.5 hours) / Wangdi (Wangdiphodrang) (1350 meters / 4430 feet, 70 kilometers / 3 to 3.5 hours). Punakha / Wangdi is the last town on the highway before entering Central Bhutan. The drive is over the scenic view of Dochu La pass with a fascinating view of the mountains of Bhutan. We will stop to take in the view.

With clear skies the following peaks can be seen from this Pass Mt. Masagang, Mt. Tsendagang, Mt. Terigang, Mt. Jejegangphugang, Mt. Kangphugang, Mt. Zongphugang a table mountain that dominates the isolated region of Lunana, Mt.Gangkar Puensum (7,497 meters / 24590 feet), the highest peak in Bhutan. Visit Punakha Dzong - (limited till Courtyard only). The religious and administrative center of the region played an important role in Bhutan's history.

Chimi Lhakhang dedicated to the Mad Monk - Lama Drukpa Kuenley - also known as the temple of fertility, about 30 minutes walk across field from the road across rice fields. It then follows a tiny stream downhill to Yoaka and across more fields before making a short climb to Chimi Lhakhang. Overnight at the hotel in Wangdue.

Day 4: Wangdue

Visit Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten. Majestically located on a ridge above Punakha valley gives an amazing view of the countryside and the hills below. Built by the Queen Mother to ward off evil forces and bring peace and harmony for all living beings, it is one of the finest examples of Bhutanese architecture.

It is located about 30 minutes drive from the town and 45 minutes uphill hike from the base of the hill through rice fields. The return walk is a hike along the riverside, following the ancient trail that goes through farmlands, village homes and arrive near Punakha. This additional hike takes about two hours and in particular worth birding and to enjoy the countryside views. Overnight hotel in Wangdue.

Day 5: Wangdue - Paro

Transfer to Paro (2134 meters / 7000 feet, 135 kilometers / 5 hours). On arrival Paro, check in to the hotel. Afternoon free at leisure. Overnight at hotel.

Day 6: Paro

Gentle Yoga and Meditation followed by breakfast

Paro landmark visits Drukgyel Dzong. On a clear day, one can see the commanding view of Mt Jhomolhari(7134 meters / 23400 feet) over the Dzong. Then visit Ta Dzong and its fascinating collection of art, relics, religious Thankha paintings. Rinpung Dzong, built-in 1646 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the first spiritual and temporal ruler of Bhutan.

The approach to the Dzong is through a traditional covered bridge called Nemi Zam. It is also the venue of Paro Tshechu, held once a year in the spring. Later, visit Kyichu Lhakhang one of the oldest and most sacred shrines of the Kingdom dating back to the 7th century.

Day 7: Hike to Tiger's Nest

Gentle Yoga and Meditation followed by a Day hike to and from Taktsang Lhakhang (Tiger's Nest) with packed or early breakfast - (to be decided by the group).

The hike takes about 2.5 to 3 hours one way through pine forests. Back to the Paro hotel. Afternoon / Evening free at leisure or one can also go for shopping in the market. Overnight at hotel.

Day 8: Paro to Destination

Kathmandu / Bangkok / India / Singapore

After breakfast transfer to the airport for an onward connection.

Important information

Visitors to Bhutan are kindly requested to comply with the following regulations:

  • Dress conservatively - no sleeveless shirts or t-shirts, shorts and skirts over the knee anywhere and especially in temples and government locations.
  • Do not litter anywhere on the visit spots.
  • The most appropriate dress code everywhere is basically jeans or pants for the day and good walking shoes for hikes.

Included excursions

During the visits to landmarks, transportation between two cities and landmarks is coordinated with local tourism company and transport is by minivan.

During this retreat, you will be travelling to different cities throughout Bhutan. You will arrive in Paro and head out to Thimphu, Wangdue, Punakha and then back to Paro.

Please book your flight to arrive at Paro Airport (PBH). There is a direct flight from 7 selected cities: Bangkok, Singapore, Dhaka, Guhawati, Katmandu, Delhi, and Kolkatta. Passengers must book their flight to arrive in any of these cities on October 2. Flight onwards to Paro will be booked separately by Phoenix-Rising.
