Bali is an island of Indonesia. It is mostly Hindu and becoming more and more popular. The beautiful rice fields, mountains, and beaches make it a heaven for people loving nature. Besides nature, it is also a hotspot for artists, hippies, surfers, hipsters, celebrities, and the rich. Each village and area attracts its own people making it possible to see Bali from a lot of different angles.

The area around the retreat, which is Canggu, is known for its excellent surf, beautiful nature, and peacefulness. It is a nice getaway from the crowded areas in Kuta, which are more hectic and include a lot of tourism and partying. It is the friendliness of the locals that make a lot of people want to come to Bali each year. Canggu is one of the best surf locations in Bali and Pelan Pelan's surf school employs only the best local teachers. There are multiple surf spots with waves, ideal for both beginners and advanced surfers.

It is important to involve the local traditions and lifestyle in the retreat. Doing so, creates an environment in which you can learn from them and they can learn from you resulting in a lovely experience for everyone.

"Emma the owner and all the staff are so nice. "

"And the people I met there (I was traveling by myself) were very nice and fun. "

"My husband and I enjoyed 8 days at Pelan Pelan Bali over the holiday season. Emma, the owner, personally arranged our stay, advised me what to pack, & helped me plan a tentative schedule. What my husband and I received from the lovely & hospitable staff far exceeded any expectations we had. Linha, the boss when Emma is away, made it so that we did not worry about anything. Chef Eny hooks up a delicious breakfast every morning. She & Chef Kis made our cooking classes fun. The food & juices are a whole other by themselves. From the moment Wayan picked us up from the airport there were no hassles or worries. Beautiful place with a staff that provides genuine quality to their guests. 10 rating isn't enough to grade our holiday at Emma's place. We returned home from PPB leaving baggage behind. All the heavy and bad energy we carried around was expelled through meditation, yoga and massages. "

"Everything from surfing, massages and facials were five stars. Meeting other other people in the retreat was also live changing as many of them I will keep in contact for years to come."

"Outside of the retreat I wish there were more people like Emma in the world, she has such a positive impact in her community and genuinely cares. I really hope one day to create an impact like hers."

"I had a fantastic time at Pelan Pelan. I booked the surf and yoga package for 7 days which includes 3 massages, a meditation session and a trip. I stayed there on my own in a shared room."

"Pelan Pelan has moved to a new location surrounded by the rice fields. it was still easy to get to Canggu by taxi. There are take away options that deliver in the evenings if you want to stay in."

"The surf lessons were great fun, the instructors were really good and as a beginner as I was very pleased how I got on."

"Pelan Pelan has a lovely atmosphere and both the staff and people staying are so friendly. The breakfasts and lunches are really tasty Indonesian food."

"The bedrooms are in 3 buildings and are beautiful, with many of the showers half outside. The pool and dining/ chilling area are also lovely."

"The yoga is in an outside Pavillion down some steps, we had different yoga teachers for the 3 sessions and they were also excellent."

"10/10 for service, atmosphere, surfing, yoga and food."

"If you want a surf and yoga package I would really recommend Pelan Pelan."

"I had a lovely time at Pelan Pelan Bali. There were a nice variety of activities and it was excellent value for money. There were only a few things I would change, I think the surf lessons should start off more slowly for beginners, I have surfed for many years (though not well or confidentially) and found the surf too big for me let alone a beginner. I also thought there should be fruit juice available after yoga but the yoga classes ended after the person that makes the juices had finished work. The yoga and mediation were good, the massages great, the food was delicious, the people friendly and the value for money unbeatable."

"The hospitality of Emma and Putu and everyone works there is great. I loved how flexible they are as i had to change my massages sessions few times as well as my private meditation session."

"Kis cooks amazing food and make great juices. Lensie cleans the rooms perfectly. "

"The yoga and meditation sessions were awesome."

"There are few improvements that would have made my stay even better, the AC in my private room wasn't working well, and even after it was fixed it wasn't cooling properly. I think the property can use some Fans installed in the common areas as well as the room. the last 4 days were so humid and hot and it wasn't comfortable sitting outside."

"Also the tour was included in the package, but i had to pay entrance and parking fees and didn't have a guide, it was just a driver taking us from a place to another. would have been great if i knew that in advanced in order to arrange for another tour with proper guide and also have a heads up on the extra cost. "

"I booked the surfing package, but i only took one lesson as i got panicked in open water unfortunately . It would if been good to know if i can't get a refund, that way i would have booked by lesson."

"I was also mislead in terms of the location of pelan pelan in terms of accessing the beach and a cafe, i was told its 5 mins walking distance. but it was 10 mins by car so commuting around was a bit of a challenge specially that i don't know how to ride a scooter."

"Overall my stay was beautiful and i met amazing people in the retreat."

"Our time in Pelan Pelan has been absolutely wonderful. Emma and her staff have gone above and beyond, to make us feel relaxed and at home here: my daughter and I will return to London refreshed, inspired and with many happy memories. We also met many lovely fellow guests here at Pelan Pelan and enjoyed the flexible 'relax' programme with them: our yoga and meditation teacher was the best I have ever experienced. Our rooms were beautiful and we were just a short distance from the beach: twenty minutes picturesque walk by foot, or five to ten minutes by scooter.Wifi enabled us to keep in touch with home, whilst experiencing the Balinese culture, surrounded by a delightful mix of rural fields, the coast and pretty villas and temples.I would like to thank Emma and all at Pelan Pelan for a magical stay. We will recommend it to all our friends and hope to return again soon! "

"I can highly recommend Pelan Pelan! Its situated a bit outside of the busy Canggu in the middle of the ricefield. There was a very nice calm atmosphere, not a partyparty atmosphere, felt like a family there! We were with 6 guests all from different countries. The swimmingpool was fantastic and also the surroundings, yoga place, massage place, chill out couches and the most important for me:great hospitality!!!! Emma and Putu where so nice. Lie Na can give you good tips for restaurants and can just call a taxi for you. The authentic indonesian lunches cooked by Kis were soooo good. I was looking forward to it every day. The personnel is very kind. In the evening we got a taxi to Changgu or ordered food. One evening we stayed in the swimmingpool, haha, so much fun! One evening we went to the village of Putu to celebrate he first bday of the surfing company. Putu and Emma are supporting a whole group of young guys to become surf instructors. We had nice food and the boys were playing guitar and singing all night long. I was totally relaxt after one week of Pelan Pelan and can give you the recommendation: go go go, you wont regret it! Thanx Emma, Putu, Lie Na, Kis and the rest of Pelan Pelan, including Angel and Tyson, the friendly cute dogs!"

"Having three teenage boys, this was the ideal holiday for us. The surfing lessons were excellent and lots of fun for us all. The yoga lessons were relaxing and energizing and ideal preparation for surfing. The setting at Pelan. It is beautiful with lovely tropical plants and birds, with a very inviting swimming pool which was used many times a day by our family when we weren't busy with the other activities. Our rooms were ideal for us with an upstairs and downstairs for the kids. One of the highlights was the incredible food, healthy and delicious lunches and amazing breakfasts. Two of our favorites being the mango/yogurt and banana pancakes were so good! And most importantly, the people. Genuinely friendly and interested and always happy to help. Thank you Emma and Putu for a brilliant holiday! "

The yoga and surf teachers are very emphatic and will help you overcome fear or take all the time you need while practicing. Everything is clean and it really feels like home. All the guest are on the same page. Especially great is the food. Perfect banana pancakes and great lunch which is served on the big table with the rest of the guest. In two months Pelan will move with their staff to another place. We are confident the new location will be even better as it looks already wonderful. Cheers Marijn and Sophie."

"Pelan Pelan is one of the favorite places I've stayed in all of Southeast Asia! The surf and yoga packages they offer are perfectly balanced and so much value for what they are charging. The food is amazing and they easily accommodated my vegan diet! If you are new to surfing the instructors give personalized attention to help you feel comfortable. You will catch waves on your first day! Just watch out for that shore break ;) Yoga classes are the perfect balance to the surfing to stretch out your sore shoulders. The location is a bit away from the main strip which means it's quiet and secluded. Rooms are simple and have everything you need, including air con (must have in Bali!!), comfy beds (I slept so good here!), beautiful pool, free water available so bring your bottle to refill, there's not much else I can say but Go! Trust me. Perfect for solo travelers or couples. You'll meet some of the nicest people from all over the world here."

Return to Pelan Pelan where an amazing freshly made Balinese feast and papaya juice are waiting. Indulge in a relaxing massage. Take a dip in the pool. Sit on a private veranda reading a book. Join group yoga on the terrace. Hop on a scooter to drive through the rice fields and explore a bit in town. Find your beanbag or swing on 'the lawn' to watch sunset. Sip bingtang and feast on seafood while listening to the waves and gazing up at the stars. fall asleep happy in your beautiful suite."

"It goes without saying that the rooms and social areas are clean and comfortable. The freshly made authentic Balinese food by the friendly staff is delicious. The surf lessons are also good quality and you will always have one instructor for no more than two people. They will teach you about the art and science of surfing, and the social aspect..which waves you should catch and which belong to others so you can have good manners even out at sea ;) The yoga nicely compliments the surf lessons and the massages here are deeply relaxing - the girls are well trained."

"As soon as you enter Pelan Pelan you can feel the tranquility and beauty of this place. I as a female solo traveler felt very safe and at home; because this place definitely won't make you feel like a tourist. Pelan Pelan offers a range of scooters that one can rent for a really reasonable price too and driving down the rice paddies in the mornings or for a sunset surf is probably one of the best memories you will collect. "

"In April 2015 I came to Surfana Bali, after hearing excellent stories from a friend. Initially, I was planning to stay for one night. However, after meeting the incredibly warm and welcoming hosts (Emma and Putu), and seeing what a true paradise this venue is, I decided to spend most of my two weeks holiday here. I cannot remember ever being as relaxed as during my stay here. It is where I experienced the slow life - taking the time to surf (several times a day), read a book, enjoy yoga and have relaxing massages. Putu is an astonishing teacher who made me very passionate about surfing. I could highly recommend Surfana Bali to anyone going to Bali to surf and/or relax, and hope to return soon myself."

Emma, the manager, was also very helpful and makes sure all guests are all together having fun, relaxing, yoga, massages, whatever takes your fancy. Surfana had a very chilled vibe about it, great location, close to everything, just a short scooter ride away, cool restaurants and bars or the main beach stripe. I most definitely recumbent Surfana whatever you are looking for in a retreat, I can't wait to go back in the near future."

"I had the best time at Surfana. The place has a fantastic energy provided by the amazing host Emma and the incredibly friendly staff. The location is perfect for a peaceful time, yet close enough to grab bars and restaurants. I cannot not recommend this place enough. Absolutely perfect for either a group of friends or solo travellers."

"The word that springs to mind when I think of Surfana Bali is happiness! Whatever you do, surf, eat, relax, everything is possible and everyone is so lovely. It doesn't matter if you come alone or with a friend, you will feel like home at the Pelan Pelan resort of Surfana Bali. When you are a surfer than would this be the most perfect chance to learn and improve. You really learn better and make more progress when the circumstances are good as Surfana's circumstances. The friendly staff, the food, the care and the rooms, everything is just perfect. I would highly recommend this place to all of you. Just visit it and be happy :)."

"Bali is a great place to surf, but it can be crowded in some places. So for those who look for a quiet place, Surfana Camp (formerly Pelan Pelan, which means slowly) - this is it. Run by a young and charming Dutch (Emma) and a warm hearted local Balinese and surf guide (Putu) everything is so well organized, you can just relax and go surf. You will be taken at the right time to the right beach for the best waves. Scooters to rent are available too. If you want to go to party, it is easy as well. Famous Deus Ex Macchina is like a 10 to 15 minutes drive by scooter. And, not to forget and for me the most important: Lisna and Kis! The two locals take care of rooms, breakfast and lunch. When I stayed there, every guest that left, wanted to take them home. Because they are pure souls, because they cook breakfast and lunch that should be getting an award, because they are just great. You can go surfing in Bali for less money but this place is worth it."

"Surfana is a little paradise on a paradise island. Every finishing touch is in place to chill out or be as active as you wish to be. The rooms, bedding, etc. are clean and fresh, the breakfast is made to order-best banana pancakes ever, lunch also made daily with tasty ingredients. I tried surfing for the first time with surf lessons, Putu is an excellent teacher. Excellent yoga classes are on offer or you can swim / sit by the clean blue pool or in the shaded outdoor soft seating area. Emma, Putu and staff cannot do enough for you - they were friendly and always smiling. We'll be back without a doubt!"

"The retreat is situated in a beautiful surrounding. It's somewhat hard to find but as soon as you enter the place you know you're able to relax and feel at home right away. The garden is beautiful a spacious. They have the most amazing dog named 'Angel' and she is always happy to play or you can take her out for a stroll on the beach. The rooms are big, super clean and relaxed. The crew is amazing and make you the best breakfast and lunch and the surf instructors will take you to the best spots where no one is around. I've stayed for 3 weeks and I did not want to leave. Now being back home I certainly miss the place a lot and can't wait to go back!"

"Absolutely brilliant hosts! We stayed here for nine days and loved it. The hosts - Emma and Putu - are just great. Emma makes this place feel like a spot of relaxed luxury in an unspoiled spot. In my few years of surfing, Putu is the best surf instructor / guide I've come across. This place comes highly recommended by us!"

"Surfana Bali is a great place to stay. You can do, as you like - it really feels like home. Only thing is that you now enjoy everything you do; take a great surf lesson, enjoy the delicious breakfast and family lunch and take a dip in the swimming pool. The rooms are great and clean, also when you share one with other guests. The staff is really helpful and kind! It's also great that you can rent a scooter to drive around, take a relaxing massage and arrive and leave any day you want. In short, great stay with great people and great food and superb surfing. I will definitely come back!"

"The whole experience was super easy, Emma is a great host and sorted everything for us, from the booking, the hotel transfer, arranging a bike for transport and recommending places to visit. The B&B is in an amazing location, peaceful, quiet and with amazing surroundings. Canggu is a really cool unspoiled place o stay in Bali, close to the busy area of Semniyak and far enough away to enjoy the cool one-off cafes, bars and chilled out environment. The room was spacious and as there are only 4 rooms it's like a private getaway, which is hard to find. The pool is beautiful and there's a common area for eating and chilling. Overall, I would recommend Pelan Pelan for anyone wanting to visit Bali for a relaxing holiday, close to the beach for surf and yoga classes - Emma even offers surfing and fitness classes too! Thanks again - we will definitely be back!"
