Kalani Oceanside Retreat offers accommodations to suit diverse preferences and budgets. Their rustic accommodations are simple, outside-in spaces that offer comfort and tranquility. Angular octagonal or pentagonal structures are a contrast to box-based architecture and invite a departure from routine.

Their accommodations are not equipped with heating or air-conditioning, as Kalani is situated on the east coast of Hawaii Island, benefiting from the persistent east-to-west Pacific trade wind flow. Windows in the accommodations are screened, maximizing airflow and views, and there are no phones or televisions in the rooms.

The bungalows are located on Kalani property and are free standing structures that have high, slanted ceilings and tall screened windows. Bungalows house up to two guests and each room contains one queen bed and one twin bed, private bath, mini fridge and offer views of the jungle or pastures. Rooms are approximately 225 square feet and are less than a 5 minute walk to the training practice space. Roommates will be assigned if you are coming by yourself.

Hale lodges

The lodge rooms are located on Kalani property and are housed in three two-level lodges or Hales (pronounced Ha'-lay, Hawaiian for "house") and have several rooms on each floor with access to common areas on both levels. The lodges are on the central lawn and are very close to the Dining Lanai and a 5 minute walk to the training practice space.

Triple, double, and single occupancy rooms are available. Rooms are approximately 200 square feet with twin, queen, or king beds, shared or private bath, fan, and a garden view. The private bathrooms have 1 bathroom right in the room and the shared bathrooms have the bathrooms outside of the room, down the hallway. Roommates will be assigned if you are coming by yourself and registering for any of the multiple occupancy accommodations.

How to get there

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at Hilo Airport (ITO). Transfer from and to this airport is available upon request.

Arrival by bus

There is a Hele-On county bus that leaves from downtown Hilo. This is a slow but inexpensive (2 USD each way) option that comes right to Kalani if you can coordinate your arrival schedule with the bus schedule. You will have to take a taxi from the airport to the bus stop (15 USD). Please plan for enough time to retrieve your bags from baggage claim and to get a taxi outside and take the 10 to 15-minute taxi ride to the nearest bus stop (Prince Kuhio Plaza - Ohuohu Street).

The bus will be like an airport shuttle vehicle and will have the word "Kalapana" highlighted above the windshield. The Hele-On bus drops off at Kalani three times per day, Monday through Friday, and two times per day on Saturday. Note that there is no bus on Sunday. Also, note that the Saturday schedule is different than the Monday through Friday schedule per the Hele-On website.

You can check out the bus schedule on the Hele-On Bus website and look at the Pahoa/Pohoiki - Hilo Routes. When looking at the schedule, Kalani is located between Pohoiki and Sea View Estates. Please make sure to contact the bus company directly to see if there are any local holidays on your arrival day and/or if the bus schedule will be impacted for any other reason.

Cancellation Policy

  • The deposit is non-refundable, if the booking is cancelled.
