Her ultimate goal is always to guide her students, regardless of age or ability, towards the freedom and truth within. Marys classes include asanas, pranayama, and meditation.

Whether helping a new student begin to learn the poses or guiding a long time practitioner find a deeper level, Marys expertise is in designing classes that work for everyone. "I was lucky enough to go on three vacations this year, and two of them were at Panacea. That's how great this place really is. This place has something for everyone. If you want to live in the jungle and write your novel up at the top of a mountain, you can do that at Panacea and be totally isolated. If you want to travel solo and connect with new friends, you'll be able to share nightly meals with some of the dynamic, generous people from all over the world. If you're heading down for some R&R, you can get a facial as you sit by the beautiful infinity pool. But if you want an active vacation with tons of excursions, Panacea can help you plan everything: from ziplining to scuba-diving, to a full-day hike in the rainforest or a romantic beach cruise.Debbie, Mary and Peter have been running this property for 11 years and know all the locals in the area. They'll make your dinner reservations, book your day-trips, and if you're traveling to another part of Costa Rica after your stay, they'll make sure you save money on your transportation. Panacea is also home to Mary Byerly, who is hands down the best yoga instructor I've ever had. Her 2-hour classes are incredible compared to those packed classes you'll find at your gym, and trust me - even if you're not a yogi, you will walk away with a full appreciation for the practice. Incredible food, comfortable accommodations, and seamless property management, plus daily yoga, meditation, and water aerobics. And it's truly affordable, even for a twenty-something living in NYC.Go as soon as you can - it's an experience you'll never forget."

"There are so many things that I loved about Panacea - a 2 hour meditative yoga session every day, wonderful vegetarian meals served in an open-air dining room with great conversation, the infinity pool, massage and reflexology, and oh!.... the sunsets from our cabina on the mountain. The owners/proprietors, Mary, Debbie and Peter have complementary skills and work really well together a team. They were helpful, friendly and caring. The ambiance is peaceful and inspiring and the resident dogs and cats made it feel like home."

"Thank you Mary and Debbie for sharing your slice of heaven with us! My boyfriend and I came during the 'rainy season' but there was no rain. I'm so glad we did because we had the place to ourselves with the exception of 1 other guest. We ended up with two of our four yoga sessions being private lessons. Mary is the real deal yoga instructor. During our two private sessions, (2 hours each), she spent the entire time teaching us how to work around our injuries, how to control our movements, and how to go deeper into our shavasana's. We left each session invigorated and mentally restored.Debbie is an awesome vegetarian cook! She served breakfast at 09:30, packed a lunch to-go (so we could explore during the day) and dinner at 18:30. We both ate every single morsel of food on our plates at each meal. The cabinas were very nice and ours had an amazing view of the ocean. There's no television or Wi-Fi but honestly, I was thankful for that. Not having that stuff forces you to focus on the present and to live in your current surroundings. Tamarindo is a short 10-minute drive and if you don't have a vehicle, they offer a daily ride into town. Debbie and Mary were very helpful with finding us stuff to do during the day, which was nice :)"

"Panacea de la Montana is perched on the side of a beautiful mountain with endless views of the ocean and valleys below. Although it's just a ten minute drive from the fun and funky town of Tamarindo, the private casitas, with vaulted ceilings and quality natural wood finishes instantly brought on a feeling of tranquility. I loved the first class yoga instruction in the huge, breezy indoor-outdoor studio, joined friends in the infinity pool for water aerobics, crafted jewelry, hiked, painted rocks, sipped wine on a lounge chair under the shaded pavilion, and thoroughly enjoyed my first experience with vegetarian food. Yummy! Hosts Peter, Debbie, and Mary are well-traveled, friendly, and clearly ready to please. They certainly helped to make my stay a memorable one that I can't wait to repeat"

"This was my first trip to Costa Rica and although friends had told me how beautiful it was, I have to say it exceeded my expectations. I have to credit Peter, Deb, and Mary for making my trip unforgettable. You feel right at home from day one and they taylor the daily activities to your needs. Mary is an amazing yoga teacher and Peter and Deb joined right in. The views, the sunsets, the food! I'm ready to go again!"

"I headed to Panacea recently for a solo adventure when I found myself with some downtime during what is typically a hectic schedule. It was just what I needed to reconnect with myself, both my body and my identity! I seriously haven't ever felt better after a vacation.Morning yoga (and some bonus afternoon sessions!) with Mary: "

"I can't speak highly enough of Mary as a teacher. I have been practicing yoga for about 5 years, going to group classes 2 to 3 times a week, but in the past year have felt a real plateau. I am more of a hobby-yogi and by no means advanced. Working with Mary helped me identify the next step big in my yoga practice: the need to build a daily practice incorporating meditation with a deeper, more balanced breath. She gave me concrete steps and I hope to keep this up upon my return back to the states! I really appreciated her alignment-junkie approach; a week with her has led me to rethink and reapproach every pose I was doing before. With her patient guidance I also had some major breakthroughs as far as "problem" areas, areas for focus in my body that were subconciously bothering me in poses and causing me to readjust without realizing it to avoid tension and pain. I am so excited to put the knowledge to pracitce; I grew so much from my week with Mary that I have every intention of going back within a year to check in and grow even further!Debbie's vegetarian cuisine: "

"Debbie's nourishing, fresh and colorful cooking also led me to rethink my diet. She is a creative chef that takes full advantage of the fresh produce available in the area. I am so excited to put some of her tips to practice back here in the US!I couldn't have done any of it without Peter's help arranging my transportation, excursions, etc. I had a lovely reflexology session with him at the end of my stay, my first interaction with reflexology, and it was so relaxing! I really felt like I was floating afterwards.Last but not least, my cabina was precious and a great retreat for some quiet time during my stay. Saludos a todos! I enjoyed getting to know you all and embrace the Pura Vida lifestyle :) until next time!"

"The hosts, Mary, Debbie, and Peter, are wonderful; the meals are fresh and delicious, and the property and views are memorable. Oh yes, and the yoga was outstanding! Mary is one of the best instructors we have come across. Don't miss the sunsets. Be prepared for some exercise getting to your cabana but that's part of the Panacea experience. We are recommending Panacea to friends and we will definitely return as soon as we can."

"An incredible place run by incredible people! I wanted to be isolated yet active, and since my stay was surprisingly inexpensive I had the opportunity to go on some amazing excursions! it was my first solo vacation and Panacea was exactly what I was looking for. Even though I was traveling solo, they gave me a spacious cabana with the best view of the mountain. I went down to the pool every morning and usually had someone to drive me to the beach every day. I'm not a morning person by any means, but I looked forward 7 a.m. yoga every day simply because Mary is an amazing teacher with an incredibly calming presence.Debbie's food is unreal. I haven't had homecooked meals in ages, and you'd be hard pressed to find a hotel or resort where the cook truly puts love and warmth into their meals. I did a reflexology session with Peter, with a massage and facial. The prices were excellent and I scheduled everything the day before I left so I really felt like I had a spa day. Plus, Debbie taught me how to mix ingredients for natural facials so I am going to try them on my friends back home. Needless to say, I can't wait to go back. Like so many reviewers, I feel like part of the Panacea family. If you're looking for a true getaway experience, this is the place!"

"I knew I needed to restart my yoga practice and a retreat seemed just the ticket. Not to mention the need to escape winter in the Northeast. My friend and I decided to try Panacea in Costa Rica and I am so glad we did. Our welcome was warm, as was the weather. Peter, Deb and Mary know what you need instinctively, and they provide it at every turn, from a comfortable room to healthy meals, and beautiful surroundings with just a touch of hippie charm. Mary is the best yoga teacher I have had in a long time and she has a voice that is soothing and vital and inspiring. I wanted to make her my life coach! "

"My friend and I made friends of the other guests easily and enjoyed our family-style meals and going on excursions together. I also enjoyed keeping strong walking to and from our cabana on the hill. Take advantage of Peter's reflexology session. We did a lot of activities in the week we were there - yoga, tour of Rincon de la Vieja (great!), as well as a ziplining session, a massage, sailing trip, swimming in the pool and at the beach. But you could also just chill at Panacea for a week and write your novel or just read one, I did that too."

  • Review by Amy B. from Seattle, Washington

"Panacea is my home away from home. Having just returned from my third visit, I know that I will be back. I live in the Seattle area and require an annual dose of heat and sunlight. Hawaii used to be go-to destination, however five years ago a friend found Panacea through Trip Advisor and suggested it would be good for sun, ocean, outdoor activities and most importantly healthy food and daily yoga. It certainly lived up to the reviews! My first visit echoes Sallys review from March 19th. What keeps me coming back to Panacea? Yoga, Food, Fun, Relaxation and Family.Mary, Deb, and Peter have created a haven on a small mountain that reflects simplicity and peace. The day starts with a snack of fruit and coffee, followed by yoga and then a full breakfast. Panacea provide daily shuttles to all sort of activities that theyll arrange for you from zip lining to surfing to shopping or walking on the beach in Tamarindo. They will even include a healthy takeaway lunch. My first visit I did all of these things and stayed quite busy. My second visit I was recovering from adrenal exhaustion, and chose to stay on the mountain to find peace through Marys daily yoga instruction, detox via Debs delicious meals & mud wraps, and giggle and move to music in Peters daily water aerobics classes. Ive found fellow visitors during all three stays to be delightful and inspiring (just as I find Mary, Deb and Peter to be).The yoga instruction and food are top-notch. I have yet to find instruction that comes close to what I learn from Mary, nor a retreat in the states that can offer such stellar yoga, food, and surroundings.During my stay on the mountain, I try and fit in at least two massages. I am a manual therapist, and find the massage therapists to be amongst the best Ive ever worked with. I highly recommend the Ayurvedic Seed Massage (similar to Thai Massage), or a deep tissue massage. The mountain offers its own kind of hospitality. From gorgeous flora, to immaculate butterflies, and the sound of howler monkeys cheering you on during yoga. How great is it to hear geckos chirping at night, or to wake up to the sun rising over the ocean, while listening to howler monkeys.Travel to Panacea via the Liberia airport is simple, shuttle service from the airport to Panacea is friendly and on time, and the roads are in good condition. Panacea arranges transportation just provide you flight details and youll be taken care of. Staffs at the airport are fluent in English, and I have never found language to be a barrier as my Spanish is quite limited.Though I still visit Hawaii, I find that Panacea is a more restorative and relaxing experience (even if I choose to stay quite busy during my visit). Overall, the visit is less expensive, and I get so much more out of the experience. I truly feel that Panacea is my Costa Rica family, and Im very much looking forward to visit fourth time!Thank you Mary, Deb, Peter, Panacea Pets, and fellow visitors! Pura Vida! "

"Both my husband & I take yoga classes, so when this get-away popped up on Living Social, we checked out the web site for Panacea de la Montana, & decided that it seemed like a worthwhile trip. It was beyond worthwhile! We had a wonderful time, & recouped from what had been an uber busy, stressful month.Mary, Deb, & Peter are calm, gracious, fun, helpful...and I could go on & on! Mary was prompt in answering emails & a couple of phone calls. We missed our connecting flight in Miami. When I emailed to let her know that we would not be arriving in Liberia until 7:00 p.m. or so, & so would not be able to check in by 5:00, she recommended a couple of hotels where we could stay. Peter picked us up promptly the next morning, & we arrived at Panacea in time for breakfast.Deb is the chef, Mary & Peter are her "sous chefs", and their food is delish! We bought their cookbook, & have been making a real effort to spend time cooking, using more fresh fruit & veggies than we usually do. Even if you are the "meat-and-potatoes" type, you would have to love what's on the menu there. It's hearty and absolutely yummy. My husband loves to be on the go on vacation, while my idea of a perfect vacation is to sit on the beach/by the pool/ lie in a hammock & have someone else cook & clean. We both got what we wanted--& more importantly, what we needed. In 4 days, we zipped through the forest on 11 zip lines, went on an estuary tour, & while my husband went to the all-afternoon sunset tour, I painted, swam, read, & took a nap. We got up for yoga with Mary every morning, & it was the best start for any day. We've been working to do the same here at home. The cabinos where we stayed are clean, roomy, & comfortable. Moreover, the hammock & table & chairs on the porch were the perfect place for a nap, reading, or a cribbage game. The cabinos are all situated to take advantage of the gorgeous view--and also situated so that privacy is optimized. All of them are on the hill above the pool & the cocina de salud, & it is bit of a hike. However, there are lovely pathways all over the hill, so it's possible to get a good workout, OR to take a more leisurely walk to your cabino.Mary arranges an activity so that there is usually one each day & so there is an active fun time, but also plenty of time to do what you want. The local folks who actually conducted the activities were gracious, fun, knowledgeable, & seemed to really enjoy having a group to show around. Peter led water aerobics every afternoon, & Deb ran the kitchen. There was a late-afternoon/evening trip to Tamarindo, where we shopped & had a really good dinner. We like to immerse ourselves in the local culture of the places we visit, & Tamarindo provided the local opportunity. The only complaint we have--and this has nothing to do with Panacea itself--is that the flights from the Baltimore / Washington area are so long! That said, it will not keep us from going back to Panacea! It's the perfect place to relax & rest. The fact that there is no Internet service or phone service was not a problem for us. After all, the point of a trip like this is to really get away from it all! We had time to re-think our priorities, & while we have to deal with the usual day-to-day issues at home, we realized, with gentle guidance from Mary, Deb, & Peter, that we do not have to let those issues run our lives.Thank you again, Mary, Deb, and Peter! We hope to see you again soon!"

" My friend and I stayed at Panacea for 1 week, but I feel our experiences there will last forever! Everything was planned so perfectly, and I honestly don't think I would have changed a thing. Our trip consisted of a great mix of everything: relaxation, adventure (loved the zip lining!), nightlife, healthy eating, new friends....I could go on and on. I never felt pressured to do anything, and each persons trip can be planned according to his or her own needs and wants. My friend and I were beginner Yogis but did not feel intimidated at all. When I first heard that Yoga would be starting at 7am, I thought there would be no way I'd make it up in time for that. But I did, and it really affected my whole day in such a positive way.In addition, the food was absolutely amazing. I am a vegetarian so it was great to be served three natural, delicious vegetarian meals a day. The views by the pool were breathtaking and of course, water aerobics were so much fun! I loved how little Panacea disturbs nature, yet still was able to maintain such clean and accommodating facilities. I cannot say enough good things about this place. I cried throughout the whole day as I was leaving! I would definitely love to come back! "

"Panacea offers a wonderful yoga experience, great vegetarian meals, and a delightful site on the side of the mountain. My daughter and I enjoyed the yoga classes and took full advantage of the rides into Tamarindo to spend time at the lovely beach and walk through the town. We also booked several excursions to see the rain forest and the tropical estuary near by. Our visit was a great introduction to Costa Rica which offers so much to vacationers, and we were very pleased to meet the friendly local people. Our stay was made very comfortable by Mary, Deb and Peter at Panacea, an experience we will recommend to friends and fellow yoga devotees."

"Words cannot do justice in describing what Panacea does for me on every level: emotional, spiritual, physical, and mental. I personally feel that one really needs to experience Panacea to truly understand where I'm coming from in my previous statement. I go to Panacea at least one time a year to get away from my businesses and any drama in my life. It truly recharges me and grounds me but more importantly it also calms me down.Debbie, Mary and Peter are absolutely wonderful hosts and truly know their specialties and how and when to utilize them with their guests. I have been going to Panacea since 2006 and I have to say that Mary is one of the best yoga teachers I have worked with. For the past few years I have been fortunate enough to video a personalized yoga routine that I can take back home with me. I can't tell you how important this is for someone who has businesses and other issues where trying to find a yoga class with my busy schedule and time constraints can be extremely frustrating . So with my personalized yoga routine I can do yoga anytime or anywhere I choose.I also can't say enough about the quality of the food that is served at Panacea. I would give anything to find a restaurant that serves food of this caliber where I live. Debbie prepares and serves her vegetarian meals like a Cordon Bleu chef with a Costa Rican flair. Peter's reflexology is always spot on with regard to all my health issues. I obviously cannot say enough about Panacea and what it has to offer!!! I have been giving them a 5 star rating since 2006."

"I arrived with no expectations other than to digitally and emotionally detox for 5 nights during my time in Costa Rica. I was blown away by how beautiful the view was from the mountain, the pool, and my cabina. If you like yoga, relaxation, nature, healthy, delicious vegetarian/vegan food, art and wellness, this is the place for you! I also liked how the town of Tamarindo was a short drive from the retreat property, so if you want to interact with locals, shop or go to the beach, those options are easily available. The yoga was outstanding. The property is beautiful. Above all, I would say Peter, Mary and Deb are some of the most warm and whole-hearted human beings who work hard to make the stay even more enjoyable than the property itself. I personally thrived here- but I am not a fancy/Four Season's resort-type person, nor am I a backpacking/"roughing it" type person. This place was exactly what I was looking for. I hope it gives to you what it gave to me!"

"For the last 5 years I have visited this amazing retreat in the quiet hills near Tamarindo once a year; obviously I love this place. There are many reasons: the location, far off from busy tourist trouble, yet relatively easy to reach. The place itself, with wonderful cabins arranged in the hills, and an open dining/meeting hall directly at the most amazing infinity pool (which features breathtaking sunsets every night). The owners, who, with their love, kindness and openness, create a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere of happiness and joy that every time i get there makes me feel relaxed and comfortable immediately. This place is unpretentious and offers real beauty. The yoga in the morning is fantastic, for beginners or advanced equally. Debbie, the woman in the kitchen, creates miracles of vegetarian dishes. The little water gymnastics in the afternoon are lots of fun and joy. I could list many great features here, but after all, it's the entire setting that makes every visit such a wonderful experience. I have read in another review that panacea does not offer choices. That is true --- there is no choice here other than feeling happy and at ease, comforted by all this place has to offer. Given that at night, sitting at Panacea's pool, you can see millions of stars in the sky, a five star rating of this place is quite an understatement."

"We'd been booked elsewhere in Tamarindo and were notified a few days before our trip that the other hotel had cancelled all reservations. So, in a most fortuitous switch, we found Panacea de la Montana. Wow. This was the perfect way to spend the last few days of our CR family vacation (4 adults). Morning yoga, fabulous meals, peaceful grounds, spectacular pool, and the gracious welcome from Mary, Debbie, and Peter. We easily bonded with other guests, and Mary directed us to one of the best beaches we've ever visited. She was a fount of great local advice for us and others. Our family certainly concurs with others' many 5 star ratings, and would give it more if we could. Can't wait to make a return visit!"
