The retreat has cabinas (cabin-like buildings), set apart from one another, and perched on the mountainside along winding pathways, offering breathtaking views of the countryside and the Pacific Ocean. They are Costa Rican wood-framed construction with stone or tile floors, a porch, hammock, tile bathroom, indoor and outdoor shower with hot water, and adorned with handmade artwork. With the environment in mind, each cabina has a powerful ceiling fan and windows on both sides for cross ventilation.

You will be taught techniques and practices that will enrich your knowledge to grow on your path of teaching yoga. The minimum requirement is to have had a committed practice of yoga for one year, and a desire to deepen your practice. It is not necessary that you have the desire to teach others, although that is what you will be qualified and certified to do at the completion of the training. Marys approach to the science and art of yoga is grounded in teachings that have been around for thousands of years.

You will learn the basic, and some of the advanced asanas and how to teach them safely and effectively to a wide range of students. You will also practice and learn how to incorporate the other important limbs of yoga: pranayama, meditation, as well as bandhas, mudras, and kriyas. You will learn to use these yogic tools to find the greatest guru of all: your inner one. Through the Panacea yoga teacher training program, you will find the voice of your authentic inner teacher, allowing you to then share your knowledge in meaningful ways out in the world.

The Panacea family surrounds you with love and support on this yogic journey. You will be nourished on all levels; with delicious, fresh, locally-sourced, vegetarian cuisine from our on-site chef, with the amazing views of the Pacific Ocean and valleys, with the nurturing, you will feel from the comfort and simplicity of our design, with the love from the crew of rescue animals, and you will be seen, heard, and guided well by a masterful teacher's teacher. You will also have the opportunity to put your knowledge into action in our local community. Panacea de la Montaña has an ongoing relationship with the Ecodesi senior center, and a portion of your teacher training fee is donated to this organization. As part of this training, you will also volunteer your new yoga skills by co-teaching at Ecodesi.

  • Discuss the history and philosophy of yoga, including the Bhagavad Gita and the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali, understanding their relevance to teaching yoga
  • Practice daily: asana, pranayama, meditation, mantra, bandha, mudra, kriya
  • Practice teaching daily and receive constructive feedback
  • Journal based on prompts to record your journey
  • Study functional anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics as they relate to a postural practice
  • Acquire skill in modifying poses and the use of props
  • Learn how to use verbal cueing and adjustments to make your classes work for everybody, in-person and online
  • Learn the art of intelligent sequencing
  • Learn to make your classes inclusive and accessible for all students
  • Examine the ethics of teaching yoga and develop your own ethical code
  • Develop your mission statement for what you will do after the training
  • Investigate how yoga and social justice work intersect

A typical day

A Typical Day

You will start your day with a 2-3 hour morning practice. You will have fresh fruit and a coffee maker in your cabina for before practice, and a full breakfast after. The rest of the morning will be spent on what supports your understanding of yoga, from history and philosophy to how the body moves. Enjoy lunch and the infinity pool overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The afternoons will mainly be spent in the practical application of your new knowledge and practice teaching. You will develop and teach a full class by the end of the training, along with co-teach in a small group at other times. You will also spend time each day learning different breathing and meditation techniques, and get to observe how you are changed as a result. After dinner, you will have time to complete assigned reading, journal, reflect, and rest.

The days will fly by, you will be amazed at how much you learn, and how much will change as you are immersed for three weeks. You will be both happy and sad when it ends. While excited to go and share what you have learned, part of you will always look back at this precious time with longing. You will miss the soul connections you form with others you meet here. Come into the yoga bubble and see what happens!
