Surf spots

Matosinhos beach

Matosinhos is located north west of Oporto looking out onto the Atlantica Ocean. It houses the biggest artificial port in Portugal and has long been associated both with fishing and sea transport industries. Today, Matosinhos is geared towards tourism and its beach is regularly used throughout the year by surfers of all types and abilities. The beach is medium sized and sandy with lots of space. The beach can be found easily on foot by leaving the metro station and following the avenue west until you come to the beach. By car you simply follow the IC24 via Rapida to Matosinhos.

This beach is a sand bar with frequent sloppy waves. The swell size starts working at 1 meter and holds up to 2.5 meters. The waves come from right and left with a normal power. The summers are pleasant here with water temperatures ranging from 12 degrees to about 19 degrees in the summer and air temperatures ranging from 10 degrees in the winter to 30 degrees in the summer. You can get by with just a pair of shorts or a shorty through the summer, in the winter months you need to suit up accordingly.

There is plenty of free parking at this spot and the beach is only about a ten minute walk from the city center. There are also shower and toilet facilities on the Surf School. In addition you can find surf shops, bars, restaurants a Shopping Center with Ocean View, the City Park, Sea Life, the Cheese Castle and many other points of interest with some limited nightlife.

Aterro beach

Situated on Portugal's north western coast in the region of Oporto lies the beach at Aterro. It is a popular spot for surfers of expert ability only. You really have to know what you are doing here because there are numerous hazards, such as large rocks in the water, strong currents and some pretty large waves. Aterro is a medium to large sized beach that is made up of sand and small pebbles. To get here you will need to drive north from Porto on the coast road, until you see signs for Aterro and the beach. There is plenty of parking close by.

The water quality is clean and conditions are choppy to wavy most of the time. However you can pick up some of the largest waves around (well over 3 meters) at this spot. The water temperature remains between 12-20 degrees depending upon the time of year. You will need a long suit during the winter months.

The facilities here are very good. On top of ample parking you also have eating establishments, shower and toilet facilities, a shop and a fully manned rescue center. If you require some really good nightlife, then the city of Porto is only a few minutes drive away.

This spot has a lot of hazards, so do not surf here unless you are competent in your abilities. Watch out for strong tides and really large waves. Also look out for large rocks in the water that are exposed during low tide. Keep an eye out for other surfers in and around your area.

Lea Da Palmeira beach

With strong waves breaking onto vast expanses of gorgeous white sand, Lea De Palmeira is a popular venue for experienced surfers of all types, especially towards its northern part where it merges with Aterro beach. There are rocks to the north and a big harbor mole to the south which is why this spot is not suited to beginners. The beach lies just to the north of Porto and is well signposted.

The water quality is clean with good, medium sized waves for most of the time. You need to have your wits about you and keep any eye out for the rocks to the north as well as the mole to the south. The water temperature ranges from 12 degrees in the winter to 19 degrees in the summer with air temperatures ranging from 10 degrees in the winter to 30 degrees in the summer. You can get by with just a pair of shorts for the summer months but come winter and you will need to suit up accordingly.

There is plenty of parking here and a few places to grab a snack or a drink. For supplies you may need to head into Porto. This destination is geared up for youngsters and there are plenty of bars and discos staying open until the early hours.

"Everything in this hostel was great! My friend and I had an amazing time here. The people were great, it was very clean (and beautiful decorated) and it's nearby the metro and bus station. The communication with the staff was also good, you could always call them if you needed anything. I would really recommend it to everybody! In one word: amazing!"

"It's a really great place there. Nice atmosphere and friendly people. You are going to get to know new people easily here and there are a lot of possibilities to spend your time. I have been in the group room with my friends, only a few smaller things could be improved but in total that didn't really matter. Thanks for this awesome week!"

"We stayed for a week at this hostel and we've had an excellent time. The staff was very friendly and helpful and everything was really clean (the bathroom and kitchen were cleaned every day), and there was enough space. The surf lessons were great; nice and very good teachers. It's ideal that the transport from and to the airport, and to and from the surf lessons is included!"

    10 out of 10

"I went to Oporto, in July, by myself as a part of a bigger interrailing tour through Europe, and chose this particular hostel after I found a group on deal. I was a little nervous since this was my first time travelling on my own.Because of my uncertainty of everything I sent a lot of e-mails to the Hostel with questions about. I don't even know. Dario, who then proved to be a great host, replied to everything without problem. While staying there I had a great time. I hung out a lot with some other Swedes, from Sweden myself, staying there at the same time. Nice room, fresh kitchen (with food you can purchase there for a reasonable sum if you've forgot to shop) and all in all a very good stay."
