The fairytale-looking Icelandic winter whites will be the backdrop for this spectacular week with the sun during the day and bright moonlit during the nights, providing fascinating light shows including a possible mystic dance of the northern lights. The cold air outside is balanced beautifully by the hot geothermal baths and Jacuzzis that is a national past-time of the warm and adventurous Icelandic people.

One Yoga Global is in an exclusive partnership with the only yoga and wellness center in Northern Iceland. You will enjoy your daily yoga practice in a newly-built and one-of-a-kind studio with majestic views of the fjord and soaring mountains that will warm your body and soul. This wellness center is complete with massage rooms, dry sauna, Jacuzzi, showers, changing rooms, and all the amenities. The friendly and knowledgeable guides live on site, giving this space a personal touch. You’ll also have the opportunity to ride Icelandic horses, see the humpback whales that live in the fjord, visit a nearby island and hike its mountaintops, work with a team of champion Huskies, and possibly even experience the Aurora Borealis.

This special week in Northern Iceland is open to all and it offers you the opportunity to learn about the culture, history, and unique geography of Iceland while experiencing some of the most magical sights of this amazing country. Each day, you will be accompanied by a professional guide who will share details of each site along with local folklore and personal stories.

Upon arrival to Akureyri, you will be transferred to the apartments or hotel rooms (available between 14:00 and 16:00), settle in, then enjoy dinner together at a local cafe in the town center. Moreover, each morning after breakfast, you will have the option to participate in an all levels group yoga / movement class. The hosts will pick you up at each domicile (all within a few blocks) and you’ll be transported across the fjord to the beautiful yoga and wellness center that overlooks the mountains and water.

Classes will be welcoming to all and if you prefer, the center has a relaxation room, beautiful views, a dry sauna, and jacuzzi available to your group. After class, you'll be transported to lunch and then you’ll head out for the day’s activities and to experience the majesty of the surroundings. If you decide to sleep in and skip a class in any morning, you can simply meet the group for lunch which will be held just a couple blocks walk from your home. Furthermore, you will have afternoon and evening adventures together and each evening after the excursions, you will return to Akureyri for dinner, then relax in your apartments and the backyard Jacuzzis to enjoy the fresh air and excellent company.

Note: This retreat is open to people at various levels of fitness with the understanding that some group activities require snowshoeing and hiking. All activities are optional including the morning yoga classes.

Included excursions

A full day adventure to Mývatn

You will visit an amazing geothermic region that will take you from the fjord through the mountains and to the lava fields. You’ll experience the rolling fields of Icelandic sheep contrasted with the barren lunar landscapes that the astronauts used to be trained for the first lunar landing in the 60s. Your day will conclude with a visit to the thermal baths of the north. On the front, it is a modern cafe, showers, and lockers but when you exit the back, you will enter large natural pools of geothermic waters bubbling from Mother Earth herself. With a high concentration of natural minerals, Icelanders often credit these waters with their health and longevity that is much higher than the norm. Later, you'll watch the sunset and the galaxies of stars arise. It is truly a sight to behold.

A tour to Akureyri

You will be learning about the history, architecture, and folklore of Akureyri. You'll drive along the fjord and make several stops including visits to some special places and hidden waterfalls. Through this tour, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported back in time or onto the most spectacular movie set designed by Mother Nature herself.

Hrísey Island visit

You will spend your afternoon with a lovely ferry ride followed by a picturesque exploration and hike to Hrísey Island. Situated at 66 degrees north and just a stone’s throw from the Arctic Circle, Hrísey is considered one of the “power” places in Iceland. This can’t be easily explained, so you'll be offered with some moments of pause to sit and feel this special planetary vortex energy.

Special hikes

For the special hikes activity, you will wear snowshoes as needed. You will hike to various panoramic vistas around Akureyri and the fjord.

The northern lights

This will be a great time of the year to witness the dance of lights but of course, Mother Nature has her own agenda. With a timeframe of seven days, the odds of sightings are high and the skilled hosts are experts at tracking the best times and locations. Please be prepared for any evenings at dinner for the hosts to offer a pickup time to go chasing the lights. Perhaps, you'll even get the show while lounging in the backyard jacuzzis or floating in the hot springs in Mývatn.

Retreat location

In this retreat, you'll be heading north in Iceland. Iceland is one of the planet’s true gems. With a total population of only 330,000, Iceland has struck a perfect balance between a warm welcoming culture and the raw untamed beauty of its vast mountainous landscapes. While most tourist groups and cruise lines visit the southern capital city Reykjavik (where the majority of the population is), you’ll be heading 66 degrees in North Iceland to the town of Akureyri which is one of Iceland’s best-kept secrets.

The cultural capital of Iceland, Akureyri, has been voted the number one destination in all of Europe by Lonely Planet on more than one occasion (including 2015). With a population of only 18,000, a mild climate on the longest fjord in the country, and close proximity to the Arctic Circle (meaning amazing northern lights), Northern Iceland is truly the place to visit.

How to get there

Recommended Airports

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at Akureyri Airport (AEY). Transfer from the airport is included. One Yoga Global will pick you up from the airport.

Most of you will depart from your home city on Friday to arrive on Saturday early morning at Keflavík International Airport (KEF) in Reykjavík, then take a smaller flight from Reykjavík Airport (RKV) to Akureyri Airport (AEY). Your return will be on the following Saturday morning from Akureyri Airport (AEY) to Reykjavík Airport (RKV), then continued with a transfer to Keflavík International Airport (KEF) and back home.

Some of you might choose to add extra days on your own in Reykjavík before or after the retreat dates. You will need to book two tickets to get to Akureyri Airport (AEY) in Northern Iceland unless you decide to rent a car in Keflavík International Airport (KEF) and enjoy a picturesque six-hour drive to Akureyri. The first flight will be from your hometown to Keflavík International Airport (KEF) in Reykjavík. From there, you will either drive or book an easy 45-minute flight from Reykjavík Airport (RKV) to Akureyri Airport (AEY).

Reykjavík Airport (RKV) is a different and smaller airport than Keflavík International Airport (KEF). If you add extra days on the front or back end in Reykjavík, the city center is only 10 to 15 minutes to the domestic airport for the shorter inland flight. For those of you arriving and departing on Saturday and flying all the way to Akureyri and then fly home on the last Saturday (no extra time in Reykjavík), Keflavík International Airport (KEF) is 45 minutes away from Reykjavík Airport (RKV), so you will need a minimum of three and a half hours between the flights to ensure you make it through customs, luggage, and take the transfer to the domestic airport.

For arrivals on the first Saturday, please look at the overnight flights that depart on Friday night and arrive Saturday morning. For departures on the last Saturday, most flights (Iceland Air is recommended) leave between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. If you are flying home on Saturday, please do not book a flight that leaves Keflavík International Airport (KEF) before 2 p.m. Please book a flight to Akureyri that is arriving between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. From Akureyri, please book a morning flight that will arrive by 11 a.m. You can send an inquiry for more detailed advice, links, and details on booking travel.
