The first recorded owners of Ockenden were the Michel family in the mid-1500s and John Michel lived there and survived when the house burnt down on the 8th of September 1608. In 1658, John Burrell who had grown rich in the Sussex iron industry, bought the manor, extending it and adding what is now the oak-paneled Burrell Room. The property remained in the Burrell family until the early 20th century and was for a time in the 1760s owned by the fourth Duke of Marlborough, whose mother Elizabeth Burrell had married the third Duke.

In the early 1900s, Ockenden was home to a Jewish Boys School and at the start of the Second World War, it housed Canadian troops. After the war, Mr. and Mrs. Eggars opened it as a restaurant and guest house, starting another chapter in the long history of what is now Ockenden Manor Hotel. And in 2017, the hotel celebrated 30 years of ownership by the same family. Please ask any member of the team and they would be delighted to show you some of the key historical points around the hotel or send through further information.

Ockenden Manor has 28 luxurious bedrooms in two houses set on nine acres of gardens overlooking Cuckfield Park. Charming staircases lead you to the rooms and suites in the Elizabethan manor house and beyond the walled garden in the award-winning spa lie stunning spa suites. From fabulous oversized contemporary spa suites with roof terraces to charming period suites and elegant, individually decorated rooms, there is something to suit all tastes.

Nestling in the warm green of the West Sussex countryside, Ockenden Manor Spa has been designed to create a haven from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Purpose-built inside a 19th century walled garden, the contemporary airy structure contrasts and complements its neighbor, the Elizabethan Ockenden Manor, and shares nine acres of parklands and gardens.

Isopod flotation

For complete tranquility and calm, nothing compares to an hour spent in an isopod flotation tank. Body temperature saltwater suspends you effortlessly, allowing every muscle total relaxation. Research shows that not only is it an invaluable injury rehabilitation aid, but it also relieves pain and boosts the immune system. A boon to meditation, it is also proven to reduce stress, encourage endorphins, and promote mental clarity.

Reflexology

Focusing on one of the most neglected parts of your body, the feet. This reflexology zone massage will help rebalance the body by working on reflex points in the feet which correspond to the rest of your body. An intensely nourishing elemental herbology body balm is used that softens and smooths even the driest of skins whilst restoring lost energy and leaving you delightfully relaxed.

Elemental rebalancing ritual

Created exclusively for Ockenden Manor Spa, this bespoke treatment restores balance to the whole body using the five elements. After selecting the five-element oil specific to your needs, hot Thai compresses are used to eliminate toxins and release tension throughout the whole body. Stretches and acupressure help to energize the body’s flow of Qi, promoting a feeling of optimum well-being.

A luxurious foot scrub is followed by a transformative facial that deeply cleanses, exfoliates, and hydrates for a brighter complexion. Topped with a glass of Ridgeview Estate and a box of handmade chocolates created especially for this divinely indulgent treatment.

Five-element aroma facial

The bespoke facial is tailored to harmonize the Five Elements and address the key underlying concerns of the skin.
