During this retreat, you will stay either in a private or a shared room at Daku Resort. Daku Resort is on Fiji’s northern island of Vanua Levu, just outside the small town of Savusavu.

It is in beautiful tropical gardens overlooking Savusavu Bay, which is straight over the road in front of the resort. Behind it, the property stretches up the mountain and you are welcome to walk there and it is surrounded by a wealth of beauty including lush green forests, coral reefs, warm seas, plus the endless warmth of Fijian hospitality.

There are five ocean view bures. Each bure can accommodate from two to three people with private decks, bar refrigerator, tea and coffee making facilities, and air conditioning. Daku Resort also has three family ocean view bures with two bedrooms, bar refrigerator, and tea and coffee making facilities accommodating four people.

During this week of yoga and meditation, Susan will show you what mindfulness and meditation are, and understand what is actually happening in your brain when you meditate, and why it is so effective that even companies are implementing it in the workplace.

Carol will share some of her favorite yoga techniques and skills to empower you to be the happiest, healthiest version of yourself, using postures to release tension and bring the body into balance and pranayama (yogic breathing) to affect a positive shift in the mind. All classes are suitable for all levels of experience.

Mindfulness and meditation

There is now a huge amount of research showing the benefits of mindfulness and meditation. It has been shown to reduce stress, improve concentration, memory, thinking creatively and flexibly, and even build more brain cells.

It increases positive emotions, builds empathy and emotional intelligence, makes you less anxious, and more accepting of yourself and others, and leads to better relationships. But have you ever wondered how? If so, this course is for you.

A combination of workshops and practices will teach you the different types of meditation and by practicing each you will discover which are the most effective for you personally.

Yoga

Yoga has been practiced for more than 5000 years and is constantly evolving. In the practice of yoga today, you move in a way that is rooted in anatomy and yogic science, meeting you where you are.

The very essence of yoga lies in attaining mental peace, improved concentration, and living in harmony with others and self. Yoga gives a chance to slow down, pay attention, savor where you are now, and the steps you have taken to get here.

Escape the stressors of life. You will learn the value of time for yourself. There are many benefits, such as improving physical strength and mobility, cultivating mindfulness, managing stress, and finding peace of mind and happiness.

Morning Vinyasa

This class will strengthen and help to create more freedom of movement in your body. Working with your unique body to find your alignment, learning to search for steadiness and ease in each pose, awakening and preparing you for your day ahead.

Each class will have a strong emphasis on the breath, helping you to be more present in your breath and your body. Going deeper into understanding yoga and how your body responds.

Learning to honor your whole being, its strengths and weaknesses. Most important is that you have fun and enjoy your practice. Finally, Carol will leave you with a take home practice that you can integrate into your life.

Afternoon workshops

The workshops will be a combination of discussion, and a Yin and Restorative practice that complements the topic, exploring different yogic techniques and discovering some of the deeper aspects of yoga.

Yin yoga

A simple peaceful practice of long-held floor poses. These poses apply a moderate stress to the connective tissue, ligaments, tendons, and fascia with the aim of increasing the health and mobility of joints, tissues, and organs. This practice also passively stimulates the meridian lines. You will immerse in the mystery of silence, contemplation, discomfort, ease, grace, and everything in between.

Blissful Restorative

Gentle restful practice to soothe and nourish you on many levels. Coming into mild variations of classic poses with a focus less on stretching and more on releasing tension. Completely supported by using blankets, bolsters, and staying for longer periods of time. An invitation to just breathe, relax, and enjoy the wonders of the present moment.

Yoga for stress relief

The modern, fast-paced lifestyles can lead to physical and emotional stress affecting health, posture, breathing, and contributing to tension, aches, and pains. A remedy for stress is relaxation and yoga can play an important role in reducing stress. You will prepare the body to relax deeply.

The eight limbs of yoga

Looking at yogic principals that are suggestions for living a better life, enhancing your way of being. You can take almost any situation in life and consider it from the point of one or more of the Yamas and Niyamas.

  • Susan Spinks

    (Mindfulness)

    Susan started a regular meditation practice in 2011, and witnessed a transformation in herself. She realized that the practice of meditation had translated into real life for her in that she no longer held on to emotions or thoughts that would have previously bothered her. Susan is an accredited meditation teacher by the Meditation Association of Australia. She currently teaches mindfulness and meditation classes in Sydney’s inner west. She has past experience of teaching maths in high schools.

  • Carol Knaap

    Carol currently teaches Vinyasa, Prenatal, Restorative, and Yin yoga. She has been practicing yoga since 1996 and started teaching yoga in 2003. With a background in the health and fitness industry since 1990 teaching a variety of exercise classes for all ages, she developed a passion for keeping the body and mind healthy through exercise and yoga. After discovering yoga, she soon realized the balance that yoga could bring to your body, mind, and your life. Yoga is now a way of life.

This retreat will take place at the Daku Resort in Savusavu, Fiji. Fiji has about 300 islands. The two big ones are Viti Levu, where you will arrive when you fly into Nadi airport, and Vanua Levu, where Daku Resort is located. Although whilst Viti Levu has most of the population and gets most of the tourism, Daku Resort is still a sleepy backwater with a small population and a fraction of the tourist numbers.

Fiji is known as the soft coral capital of the world, and the sites around Savusavu Bay and Namena Island offer you an opportunity to explore the fabulous reefs with their profusion of hard and soft corals and myriad fish life.

This retreat includes three daily buffet meals. During the retreat, you will be served a tropical breakfast or a full cooked breakfast. For lunch, you will enjoy salads, wraps, omelets, fish and chips, chicken curry with rice and chutney, or burger and fries.

For a quick snack, you can have a plate of salad or a bowl of fries and for dessert, there are platters of fruit or a bowl of home-made ice cream. The daily menu for dinner is on the board each day.

By request of the teachers, some of the yoga retreats have a vegetarian menu, although most have options for chicken and fish as well. They can also cater for vegan or gluten-free diets. Anytime you want a refreshing drink, there are fresh pineapple juice, soft drinks, and delicious banana or tropical fruit smoothies.

    "Have been going through SavuSavu for over 30 years and never stayed in town. This place is a gem, quiet and lush with a view of SavuSavu Bay that is unparalleled. My wife and I enjoyed two days just before the May rush, had the place to ourselves. The ocean view bure, with its amenities including thick white towels, was perfect and would recommend this spot to anyone coming to Vanua Levu, the other large island in the Fiji group. Lastly, it is the only time I can remember that a resort owner, in this case JJ, ever drove us to the airport. It gave just the extra touch and allowed for last minute sharing (veitalanoa in Fijian language) that makes the stay special.     "We stayed at Daku for 7 nights as part of a dive package and had an amazing time. We stayed in an ocean view bure which was down by the water where you could step off the balcony and in 30 steps be in the ocean. The room was clean and well serviced. The thing that I feel really sets Daku apart from any other resort is the friendliness and genuine welcome from all the staff but particularly JJ and Delia. Having lived in Fiji for a long time they are real locals and can tell you about the place and suggest things to do to get the most out of your stay. JJ is great to chat to and seems to know all of his guests, he introduced us to other travellers who were doing similar things, and really goes the extra mile. The resort is a $4 taxi ride or 15 min walk from town, it has a good restaurant or they can suggest other places to eat out nearby. Overall highly recommended."
