It is the city’s historical district and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tonight, you will meet your host and yoga teacher, Yasmin, for a welcome briefing. At 10 a.m. the group will depart from the Central hotel for a walking tour in Casco Antiguo. In 1673, after the devastating pirate attack, Panama City was moved seven and a half kilometers west to a small peninsula at the foot of Ancon hill. It is closer to the islands that were used as the port and near the mouth of a river that eventually became the entrance of the Panama Canal.
The relocated town known today as Casco Antiguo or the Historic District of Panama, not only had better access to fresh water but could be fortified. Most outstanding are the various churches and the Presidential Palace that was originally built in the late 17th century and partially reconstructed in the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries.
It is to represent an example of the transformations that characterize the Historic District as a whole. Today, Casco Antiguo is home to a lot of artists, galleries, handcraft markets, restaurants, and vibrant night life. Along with the wonderful mix of colors, people, and flavors.
You will also join Yasmin for an exquisite sensory Panamanian chocolate journey, it begins with the discovery of the cocoa tree to a lifetime of unforgettable chocolate tasting experience in the historical district. You will have the chance to taste a variety of types, feel aromas, and flavors of cocoa followed by a healthy lunch.
In the afternoon, you will visit the Panama Canal Visitors’ Center at Miraflores Locks, where ships can be seen transiting the waterway. The third floor exhibit hall will provide information about the history, engineering, and current events related to the Panama Canal.
After that, you will be dropped off at Panama City’s domestic airport to catch a 60-minute flight to Colon Island, the main island of the province, Bocas del Toro. The islands of the Bocas del Toro Archipelago have been called the Galapagos of the Caribbean. They are located in the extreme western part of the country that is only 25 miles from the Republic of Costa Rica.
This archipelago has the perfect combination of historical and cultural traditions. Along with a charming variety of aquatic species, coral reefs, mangroves, beaches with crystal clear water, and undisturbed jungles with all the flora and fauna you can imagine. The most famous visitor to this piece of paradise was the Admiral Christopher Columbus on October 6, 1502.
It was his fourth and last trip to the Americas, he entered with two vessels into a wide bay (now called Almirante Bay), took in provisions on the present Bastimentos Island and careened a ship in the vicinity of Carenero Island.
After a 25-minutes boat ride, you will arrive at the eco-lodge located on Bastimentos Island. You can relax at the quiet dock by the water, a wrap-around porch overlooking the bay, explore the lush rain forest, and enjoy tropical weather. Then, get settled and enjoy a welcome dinner and orientation with Yasmin. You will be spending six nights at Tranquilo Bay eco-lodge.
After a flow of light yoga morning practice and a hearty breakfast, you have the rest of the day to enjoy the rain forest, mangroves, or ocean before the afternoon transfer to Bocas del Toro "Isla Colón" International Airport (BOC) to catch the domestic flight back to Panama City.
You will be dropped off at your hotel in Casco Viejo in the early evening. Then Yasmin may join you for a farewell dinner at a local restaurant in the old town before you say goodbye. You will be staying one night at the Central Hotel.
