Vista Verde Guest Ranch's style is first class and friendly, whether you choose to stay in a private cabin or deluxe lodge room. The quiet, luxurious cabins are placed along the base of the hillside and from one to three bedrooms as well as one to three bathrooms with living rooms, wood stoves and private hot tubs out on the deck. The spacious lodge rooms are very convenient and have sitting areas, balconies and gorgeous mountain views paired with the rustic feel of a Colorado dude ranch.

The cabins and lodge rooms come filled with amenities that otherwise would take up space in your luggage. Vista Verde Guest Ranch has hair dryers, water bottles, coffee makers and mini refrigerators in each unit. Please let Vista Verde Guest Ranch know if there is anything special you need in your room for your stay. Vista Verde Guest Ranch's wonderful housekeepers will do laundry for you if your jeans start walking on their own.

There is a laundry bag in your accommodation, so just leave what you want to be washed in the morning and they will have it back by the next morning if not earlier. There is a minimal charge of 2 USD per pound for this service. Please note that as much as Vista Verde Guest Ranch love animals, they cannot allow pets to come stay at the ranch. Vista Verde Guest Ranch has several here who do not like to share their home but do love to have your attention when you are here.

Resort-like amenities

If you have the expectation of amenities like you would find at the best resorts, Vista Verde Guest Ranch will deliver it but in a casual and warm manner. They have invested heavily in the ranch over the years and are proud of the major lodge addition, classy indoor riding arena, kid's cabin, landscaping improvements and swimming pool. In addition, Vista Verde Guest Ranch is constantly rotating the cabins through an upgrade and updating process. With a philosophy of “How can we make this better?” there are always new projects on the horizon to meet the expectations of a well-traveled guest who expects the best of a resort but in a dude ranch setting.

Each cabin and lodge room offers a snack bar, refrigerator stocked with complimentary beverages, coffee maker, hairdryer, robes plus much more. Each day, Vista Verde Guest Ranch's magical housekeeping fairies will come and tidy up for you as well as turn down your beds in the evening. You read it right, there are no phones or TVs in the accommodations. Wireless internet is available in the main lodge at no charge.

The fitness center offers an elliptical and treadmill as well as a multi-gym for strength training. Chances are you will never visit this area as you can get a better workout with a better view on the trail. But it is here for those times when you just need a gym fix. Yoga is also offered weekly. The swimming pool debuted in June 2011 and will give you a place to relax and cool off at the end of the day or when you are just not ready for another adventure.

The Coyote Corral is where you will find the spacious kid’s cabin and the low ropes course. The kids pretty much own this area but the adults can resort to bribes for entrance into the kid’s cabin. The Great Room is an area for lounging as well as gathering with other guests and staff during happy half-hour daily and some of the evening programs. With beautiful views of the “Sunday pasture” and a great roaring fire in the winter months, it is elegant and spacious yet warm and inviting.

Vista Verde Guest Ranch's huge and airy indoor riding arena is a great place to meet up with our horse trainers for a clinic. It is cool in the summer and heated in the winter so you and your horse can focus on learning more together.

Cabins

Named after the local mountains, Vista Verde Guest Ranch's ten cabins are rustic on the outside and anything but on the inside. Of course like the mountains, they are beautiful and spectacular without being the same, so no one cabin is better than the another. Furnished with a mix of antique, Western art, lodge pole pine beds and handmade log furniture, the cabins are comfortable and luxurious. The cabins range from one bedroom and one bathroom to three bedrooms and three bathrooms.

They are quite spacious and Vista Verde Guest Ranch will fit you to the one that gives the right amount of space for the size of your group. Every cabin has a sitting area with a wood-burning stove for ambiance and to cozy up to on those cool nights. Each cabin has its own hot tub on the deck so you can sit under the stars and soak at the end of the day.

Lodge rooms

Convenience, comfort, and wonderful views. Located just up the stairs of Vista Verde Guest Ranch's main lodge, you do not even have to put on shoes to come down for breakfast. The three lodge rooms are named after nearby lakes that have captured our fancy. Each has a private bathroom and small sitting area.

Recently remodeled and furnished with beautiful Western art and handmade king beds, the spacious rooms provide sanctuary to come back to after a long day in the saddle. For those who do not need as much space or are traveling alone, the lodge rooms are a perfect choice.

Adult programs

Yoga

In the winter months, it will not be quite practical or comfortable although it might be beautiful to practice out in the snowy woods. So, Vista Verde Guest Ranch will bring the yoga classes inside where it is warm and cozy. Every twice a week, Devyn will lead you through an hour long practice while the aspens rustle overhead. It will be an all-levels class so beginners are welcome to give yoga a try and experienced yogis will enjoy the unique setting.

A tree pose never seemed so relevant until you are doing it in a grove of trees. Devyn’s twice weekly classes will give you a chance to take a break from being outside in the snow and to stretch out those skiing, snow shoeing and horseback riding muscles that are not used in normal life.

Horse program

Another element of Vista Verde Guest Ranch's winter program is the horses. Whether you are coming with the focus of the top notch riding program or just want to ride a little to take a break from skiing, they will get you in the saddle to have fun and learn.

Horsemanship clinics and lessons

For those looking for a more in-depth riding experience, Vista Verde Guest Ranch offers riding in the indoor arena each day. Here, you will be able to learn how to communicate better with your horse and improve your riding skills. The full-sized ranch and heated indoor riding arena are the reason this can all happen at Vista Verde Guest Ranch. The indoor facilities include stalls, grooming areas, and a large tack room so you can enjoy all aspects of horse care in comfort.

Cooking class

Vista Verde Guest Ranch's cooking class will be held throughout the season and they will try to make it interesting for those who think they cannot boil water, those who think they can, those who get down and dirty in the kitchen as well as those who want to watch. The cooking class will be a great time for Chef Cholly to get a chance to meet you and have some fun sharing his passion.

Chef Cholly will try to offer a variety of options so you can walk away with an arsenal of ideas. Regardless of what you will do, you will have fun to share ideas and talking about the thing Chef Cholly loves the most which is food. However, Vista Verde Guest Ranch will limit the size since there can only be so many cooks in the kitchen.

Wine tasting

Chef Cholly will host the wine tasting class each week during the winter season and enjoy getting both novices and total wine geeks attending. Vista Verde Guest Ranch will take a look at techniques for evaluating wine including developing a more extensive wine vocabulary so you can put your sensory impression into words. The wine-tasting will be an eclectic variety from the basic to the adventurous.

Photography tours

Local photographer Carla Jones will join to help you work out the kinks and help you better capture the beauty of the area surrounding the ranch or your kids.

Family-friendly programs

Snowshoeing

The joy of snowshoeing is getting out and soaking up the backcountry without having to worry about technique or form because there is literally no techniques to snowshoeing besides being able to walk like a duck. With some simple pointers about going up and down hills off, you will go. If you would like, a guide can take you on a tour up to Hinman Lake, the Cliffs or somewhere even further away from the ranch.

You can also go and romp around by yourself. Snowshoes will allow you to access some places that you just cannot get to on ski. You can make it into a great workout in the deep snow or just go for a stroll on one of Vista Verde Guest Ranch's snowshoe specific trails that are already groomed for you.

Backcountry ski touring

The hallmark of a winter vacation at Vista Verde Guest Ranch will be heading out with their talented guides to explore the backcountry on skis called “Backcountry Touring”. This experience will offer the perfect balance between invigorating exercise and relaxing tranquility. The skis will be a mid-range width and weight, falling in between light cross country classic skis and heavy telemark or AT skis.

Likewise, the boots will be a mid-weight boot, much like a hiking boot that will give you more support than a classic cross country ski boot but less than a heavy plastic telemark boot. With this equipment, you can ski on a frozen lake across an open meadow through the aspens or pine groves at the bottom of a ravine with dramatic rock outcroppings or up a hillside then down the other side. The views, vistas and the sounds of silence are fabulous.

Vista Verde Guest Ranch's guides have all the knowledge to take you out into the backcountry safely and instruct you on the technique required. Whether you are a complete novice or have been skiing all your life, Vista Verde Guest Ranch will get you into appropriate terrain for your ability and fitness level.

Classic and skate skiing

Vista Verde Guest Ranch's 15-kilometers groomed trails around the ranch are great for classic and skate skiing. The terrain is geared towards a beginner or intermediate skier with loops taking you through open meadows, over babbling creeks and into the aspens. You will grab some gear and head out before breakfast for a sunrise ski or just get out there and enjoy the trails during the day when you just want to enjoy the peace as well as quiet on your own.

Vista Verde Guest Ranch's guides will provide an intro to skiing for beginners. They also offer a Skate Ski Clinic several times throughout the week for those looking to take it to the next level. The adventure center is stocked with first-class complimentary equipment for all the different kinds of skiing and Vista Verde Guest Ranch can outfit you with just the right gear.

Fat biking

You will experience a truly unique winter activity at Vista Verde Guest Ranch with their fleet of fat bikes. These fat tire bicycles will allow you to ride around on the packed trails and experience a sport that has become all the rage during the winter months in Colorado.

Vista Verde Guest Ranch has been pleased by how many people have fallen in love with fat biking while staying at the ranch in the winter. Give it a try and you will find out why it is becoming such a popular outdoor activity at winter resorts.

Snowtubing

Tubing is one of Vista Verde Guest Ranch's most popular winter sports. Adults, kids, friends, families or strangers all seem to be asking to go tubing at least once during their stay. Maybe it is the convenience of having the guides pull you up on the snowmobiles before you whip down the hill, the cushy tubes, or just the childlike fun that never gets old of zipping down a hill, but it will be a hit.

Winter-time kids' program

Kids are like puppies in the snow. They will jump in it, roll in it, eat it and they seem to never get cold. A family snow vacation at Vista Verde Guest Ranch means quality time together, sharing new experiences, creating memories but also some time for mom and dad to relax and recharge on their own.

The engaging kids' program is for children aged 6 to 12 years old. Vista Verde Guest Ranch will wear them out from tubing or horses riding to snowshoeing or just play in the snow. Vista Verde Guest Ranch will get them outside and keep them going all day long. Each day will bring a new adventure for the kids and after having breakfast with you, they can run on over to the kids' hut to meet up with the kid wranglers for the morning.

After a fun-filled morning, they will meet up with you again for lunch and then off they go again until later in the afternoon. Although Vista Verde Guest Ranch does encourage families to participate in activities together, they know the allure of the fun to be had with the other kids is a strong pull.

Teens will be welcomed to join the kids' program any day and for any of the Dine and Dash meals. There will be no formal teen program during the winter months, but Vista Verde Guest Ranch will invite them into the fun with either the adults or the kids.

Trail rides

You will be sitting astride one of Vista Verde Guest Ranch's horses resplendent in their warm and thick winter coat. It will be an experience not to be missed. It will also be a lot different than riding on summertime trails with the blanket of fresh snow under the horses' hooves.

Vista Verde Guest Ranch will keep a few trails around the ranch packed down during the winter. Because of the snow and the colder weather, they will keep the rides to a slower pace and only go out for an hour or so. Whether you ride on a warm and sunny day or on a day when the snow is falling gently on you, it will be an experience not to be missed.

Sleigh rides

At Vista Verde Guest Ranch, you can enjoy the scenes of a winter wonderland from a horse-drawn sleigh. You will gather your sweetheart, friends or kids and head out over the snow-covered meadows around the ranch. Each day, you will hitch up Vista Verde Guest Ranch's draft horse team to haul a huge load of hay out into the horse pasture and feed the horses. Vista Verde Guest Ranch will invite you to jump on the sleigh or either just enjoy the ride and help toss out hay to the herd.

It just would not be right to spend time in a winter wonderland without singing a line or two of “Jingle Bells” and you can do just that when you head out on Vista Verde Guest Ranch's “one horse open sleigh” around the ranch. If you would like, you can also hop on the big sleigh pulled by Vista Verde Guest Ranch's team of Percherons and help the wranglers feed the resident herd of horses each day. Either way, it will be a wonderful winter experience while the horses do all the work.

Horses

Vista Verde Guest Ranch began breeding horses in 2009. The objective is to produce versatile, sound minded, people-loving horses that are also really good looking and pretty. So far, Vista Verde Guest Ranch is right on track. Their foals come from championship bloodlines in both the reining and cow competition worlds. Even the horses are no less than four diamond quality. Anyone who is a fan of studying pedigrees knows it is the ladies who make it all happen.

As you will see in the list below, Vista Verde Guest Ranch's broodmares come from pretty great bloodlines and make wonderful crosses with our stallion. Here are some of the main horses.

  • Flicka (born in 2005; registered name: Whimsys Last Chic; Sire's name: Remedys Chic Mate)
  • June (born in 2006; registered name: Frostys Red Baron; Sire's name: Trace of Frost)
  • Lena (born in 2002; registered name: Aprees Peppy Lena; Sire's name: Shawn O Lena)
  • Lucky (born in 2008; registered name: Lucky Charm Dunegan; Sire's name: CT Reyn Mann)
  • MJ (born in 2005; registered name: Mary Jane Reyn; Sire's name: CT Reyn Mann)
  • Oakley (born in 2010; registered name: VVR Emmie Oakly; Sire's name: Peptos Blue Oak)
  • Telletube (born in 2005; registered name: Reynyday Whoamann; Sire's name: CT Reyn Mann)

Each year, Vista Verde Guest Ranch produces anywhere from 4 to 6 foals. The goal is to raise them, train them and move them into their riding strong. Although Vista Verde Guest Ranch keeps most of them to work into the herd, they do sell some as show prospects to support the program.

Cholly is also a lifetime member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and a member of The Bread Baker’s Guild of America since 2004.

  • Carla Jones

  • Steamboat Springs - 45 minutes
  • Yampa Valley Airport (HDN) - one hour

During this retreat, you will be served three delicious meals per day with a wide assortment of wine, beer and other beverages. The culinary program at Vista Verde Guest Ranch is designed to impress even the most experienced palates. The Executive Chef Cholly McGlynn has a full staff of trained and experienced chefs. The meals range from gourmet cookouts to more formal plated entrees and wine service is offered every evening. Special dietary needs are happily accommodated.

Chef Cholly’s philosophy with food is to source the best ingredients available including organically raised products. From vegetables to wheat, dairy products, hormone and antibiotic free beef, pork and chicken as well as sustainably caught seafood from both coasts, you name it. In conjunction with these principles, Chef Cholly's crew strives to keep the flavors clean so the exceptional ingredients can shine. With each meal, the chefs balance "ranchy" with fancy and comfort food with a lighter option as well as accommodate any dietary restrictions or requests.

With all the time you will spend outside using muscles that have not been used for a while, you definitely earn the right to enjoy all the wonderful cuisine and enjoy the great company of the other guests as well as the staffs around the table. Please note there is typically a “lighter” entree option available as well as a vegetarian dish or two and keep in mind that some meals are more casual-style barbecue meals or cookouts.

Breakfast

Ranch breakfasts have a reputation to live up to. This is the meal when the ranchers stock up for the day on hearty fare that will keep them going however hard they work. Vista Verde Guest Ranch's breakfasts reflect that heritage but with a little bit of fancy thrown in and an understanding that not everyone wants to partake in a heavy meal. You can keep it light with fresh fruits, berries, and homemade bread or go for it with a made to order breakfast burrito, eggs benedict or honey wheat pancakes with caramelized apples on top.

Lunch

In the winter, Vista Verde Guest Ranch will venture outside on the deck on a warm and sunny day. But most of the time, it is a treat to come inside the lodge for lunch after an active morning out in the snow because you really earn your lunch in the winter. Each day a variety of salads will await you as well as homemade soups to warm you from the inside. In addition, the chefs will prepare several hot entrees that can vary from simple and hearty to elegant and unique.

Dinner

Dinner is the main event at Vista Verde Guest Ranch. They offer several casual and family style dinners, but the big draw is what Vista Verde Guest Ranch calls the “formal dinners”. The dress is anything but formal and the food rivals most metropolitan upscale restaurants.

These multi-course dinners are true events in themselves and Vista Verde Guest Ranch intentionally does not rush through them. Here is a chance for you to relax with a nice glass of wine, delightful menu choices and wonderful conversation with the other guests you have met during your stay.

For wine enthusiasts

A fabulous meal is only made better by the great ambiance, fun conversation, and a delicious wine. As part of a true ranch pricing, house wines, beer and a variety of sodas are included in your stay.

Vista Verde Guest Ranch does not publish their wine list as it changes frequently and the chef is constantly keeping an eye on special and new wines as well as fun beers to bring into the ranch. Vista Verde Guest Ranch enjoys wine, have fun learning about new wines and think that they have really great house wines.

In fact, the wines must be pretty good as it is rare that Vista Verde Guest Ranch has a guest purchase premium wine off of the Private Cellar list which is available at an extra charge.

Families and dining

While many parents join Vista Verde Guest Ranch to have some quality time with their children, there comes a time-usually quite quickly it seems when a little adult time is quality time as well. So, Vista Verde Guest Ranch structures a number of adult candlelight dinners while the younger set is in the capable care of the kids' wranglers.

What makes this possible is a tradition started some years ago called "Dine and Dash". It features a nutritious and tasty menu (but kid-friendly such as no Brussels sprouts). Then, while mom and dad are enjoying a leisurely dinner with adult conversation, the youngsters are off on a hayride or treasure hunt or to play 'Capture the Flag'.

Some evenings will be spent together as a family with casual meals and evening programs. On other evenings, you will have what Vista Verde Guest Ranch calls a “formal dinner” for the adults and the Dine and Dash dinner for the kids. Parents can enjoy a quiet meal with a nice glass of wine and other adult conversation while the kids have a quicker as well as more kid-friendly dinner and then head off for a fun activity.

Teens tend to ride the fence between wanting to be grown-up and embracing the joys of youth. Knowing that the teens are encouraged to join the teen wranglers for the Dine and Dash dinner and then their own set of activities. But they are also welcome to join the adult dinner with you if they prefer.

Now, Vista Verde Guest Ranch's culinary institute-trained chefs are used to preparing culinary delights, but they are quite versatile. After all, they were youngsters once too, so they embrace an offering fare that ravenous young guests (not to mention the kid wrangler crew) will put away.

Note: Vista Verde Guest Ranch's chefs are happy to accommodate special dietary needs. They will send out an advance guest information form with space for you to fill out your requests and needs. However, if it is more than just “I don’t eat red meat” a more in-depth explanation will be helpful. That will allow the chefs and wait-staffs to really keep an eye out for making sure there is always something for you at each meal.
