Constipation is difficulty in passing stools or the infrequent passage of hard, dry stools as a result of food moving slowly through the large intestine. Most people experience constipation from time to time, but usually, lifestyle changes and better eating habits can help relieve the symptoms and prevent recurrences.
In most cases, constipation arises from insufficient amounts of fiber and fluids in the diet. Fiber is found in plant foods, such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Fiber that is soluble in water takes on a soft texture and helps soften the stools. Insoluble fiber passes through the intestine largely unchanged and adds bulk to stools, which in turn helps to stimulate bowel contraction.
Other factors that can cause constipation include inadequate exercise, advanced age, muscle disorders, structural abnormalities, bowel diseases, neurogenic disorders, and a poor diet, especially heavy consumption of junk food. Constipation may be a side effect of iron supplements and some drugs, such as painkillers and antidepressants. It is also common during pregnancy.
This is a clogging of small or large intestines, resulting in irregular bowel action. Also, it means that involuntary contraction of the intestines that move the waste matter through is weak. During constipation, stagnation and fermentation take place. If the toxins are absorbed from the colon, this can cause a headache, backache and lethargy, loss of appetite, coated tongue, bad breath, insomnia, colic, hernia, and hemorrhoids.
It is interesting to note that vegetarians seldom suffer from this problem especially when they eat so many raw foods. Excessive constipation comes from devitalized, cooked foods, wrong eating habits, internal medication especially in incompatible combinations, and lack of exercise. These cause result in sluggish bowels and chronic constipation where the colon is filled with feces and toxic by-products of fermentation and putrefaction, which impairs peristalsis, irritates the colon, and eventually poisons the bloodstream by osmosis.
Regular bowel movements are an important mechanism for removing toxins from the body. The colon serves as a holding tank for waste matter. Antigens and toxins from bowel bacteria and undigested food particles may play a role in the development of diabetes mellitus, meningitis, myasthenia gravis, thyroid disease, candidiasis, chronic gas and bloating, migraines, fatigue, and ulcerative colitis.
People can have bowel movements as infrequently as three times a week and still not one constipated although there are some health practitioners who maintain that it is important to have a bowel movement every day. It is important that the bowels move on a daily basis. The body normally excretes waste in eighteen to twenty-four hours. Harmful toxins can form after this period.
Long term and severe untreated constipation is dangerous. You can not afford to ignore it. It can give rise to appendicitis, bad breath, body odor, coated tongue, depression, diverticulitis, fatigue, excess gas, headaches, hemorrhoids (piles), hernia, indigestion, insomnia (lack of sleep), a mal-absorption syndrome which can lead to a deficiency in important nutrients, obesity and varicose veins. It may also be involved in serious diseases such as cancer.
