Certifications

Upon completion of this yoga teacher training, students will receive certificate affiliated with Yoga Alliance. Registration with Yoga Alliance provides a globally recognized credential.

This yoga school and training are certified and recognized internationally by Yoga Alliance. On successful completion of this training, you will qualify for RYT200 certification. You will develop and enhance a strong yoga practice, the ability to sequence your own classes, an understanding of multiple styles of yoga and skills to enrich the lives of yourself and others.

Your training is six days a week for four weeks. You will wake up early to feel the serenity of the island. This will ease your mind for early morning meditation and help you to get in touch with nature before rush hour. You will have 5 registered yoga teachers, including 2 lead trainers to guide and assist you.

Course outline

This 200-hour yoga teacher training on Koh Phangan covers all the necessary techniques and skills to get started on sharing your practical knowledge of yoga, both physical and intellectual, and to continue advancing well in your own ongoing studies. Practices led by an experienced team of teachers include asana, pranayama, mudra, bandha, neti, meditation, and chanting mantras.

  • Teaching workshops: Demonstration of asanas and their variations, classification and sequencing of yoga asanas as per traditional understanding based on chakras, and adjustments of common mistakes and hands-on techniques
  • Yoga anatomy: Therapeutic benefits of asanas and pranayamas, precautions, and contraindications, as well as anatomy and physiology of seven systems of the body
  • Philosophy and ethics: Introduction to yogic lifestyle in modern times, historical evolution of yoga, paths of yoga, and Patanjali Yoga Sutras
  • Teaching practice (practicum): During the third and fourth weeks, you will lead two 90-minute and two 60-minute classes
  • Career: Business / career of a yoga teacher, communication skills, safety norms, and how to plan your sessions

Curriculum

Techniques training / practice (117 hours)

Includes asanas, pranayamas, kriyas, chanting, mantra, meditation, and other traditional yoga techniques. These hours are a mix between (1) analytical training in how to teach and practice the techniques, and (2) guided practice of the techniques.

Teaching methodology (26 hours)

Includes principles of demonstration, observation, assisting / correcting, instruction, teaching styles, qualities of a teacher, the student’s process of learning, and business aspects of teaching yoga.

Yoga anatomy and Ayurveda (26 hours)

Includes both human anatomy and physiology of bodily systems, organs, etc. Anatomy of the Pranic body: chakras, nadis, bandhas, etc. Includes both the study of the subject and application of its principles to yoga practice (benefits, contraindications, healthy movement patterns, etc.). Basic introduction to Ayurvedic three doshas, diet and lifestyle based on seasons and constitution.

Philosophy, lifestyle, and ethics (26 hours)

Includes the study of Yoga Sutras, yoga in a big picture, historical evolution of yoga, four paths and various techniques for self-realization, yogic lifestyle in a modern society, and ethics for yoga teachers.

Practicum (20 hours)

Includes practice teaching, receiving feedback, observing others teaching and hearing / giving feedback.

Sivananda Yoga Vidya Peetham (India) Yoga Alliance E-RYT 200 (Sivananda Yoga)
Sunny is originally from Thailand but had moved to Canada in 2000. Her yoga passion started in 2008 when she went for her first yoga session in Winnipeg. In 2011, she received her RYT 200 yoga teacher training certification, where she was trained in the Sivananda style. She started her teaching career in Bangkok area at a fitness center, and then assisted and led a few yoga teacher training classes in Kerala, India. After returning from India, she decided to move to Koh Phangan, Thailand to start building her own yoga teaching business, which she did in 2012.
Shannon McGill
Sivananda Yoga Vidya Peetham (India) Yoga Alliance RYT 200 (Sivananda Yoga)
Shannon co-founded Sunny Yoga with Sunny McGill in 2012. He acquired his RYT 200 yoga teacher training certification in 2011 with Sivananda Yoga Vidya Peetham in India. Soon after, he went back to assist and teach at a yoga teacher training school in Kerala, India. In 2012, he moved to Koh Pha Ngan, Thailand, and has been teaching on the island since then.
Arya Murty
Yoga Alliance E-RYT 500 (Yoga)
Arya Murty is the founder and director of Arya Yoga Sala. He belongs to a South Indian Brahmin family from Andhra Pradesh and started his yogic practices at the age of 15. By the age of 18, he was initiated into Mantra yoga and his practices included the mantras of Ganesh, Shiva, and Shakti. He finds joy in sharing the knowledge he has cultivated from various traditional Indian yoga teachers. To date, he has taught yoga philosophy, asanas, and meditation mostly to international students, in over 30 yoga teacher training courses.
Nancy Huettig
Nancy’s life changing journey started as she walked away from her corporate job to find her heart’s desire. She followed her desire- travelling guided her through healing from her burn-out and she found new inspiration for her life. Yoga, Reiki and Meditation in combination with the nature and the holistic Ayurvedic system of self-healing helped Nancy to create the right balance, mindfulness and peace in her body, mind and soul to reach her purpose in life with love, compassion and consciousness. She teaches Ayurveda, Partner Yoga and Chakra Yoga during Sunny Yoga teacher trainings.

Retreat locatie

Set in the heart of Srithanu, Koh Phangan on a jungle hilltop surrounded by nature, we train, study, eat and chill at the incredibly beautiful new Sunny Yoga Hilltop Yoga & Meditation Center. Up the hill away from the noise you'll find two open air mosquito protected Yoga Sala's, a lounge area and views overlooking the inner hills of the island. The sun rises over the inner hills of the island and lights up the main sala during morning meditation.

Healthy vegan, vegetarian and Ayurvedic food plus hot ginger lemon tea are included on training days. Each day, your training includes morning ginger lemon tea and a fresh coconut, vegan-friendly brunch and fruit snack at early afternoon break.

For any more food needs, Srithanu area is full of healthy food options, all within walking distance (vegan and vegetarian, raw, macrobiotic and of course local Thai food restaurants). Most of the local Thai restaurants here can also cook vegetarian on your demand. Sunny Yoga won’t prescribe your diet but they suggest vegetarian and no alcohol or drugs to optimize your concentration and energy levels during your yoga teacher training.
