In La Canada there is the main house with a choice of three rooms. Each room has its own bathroom and terrace. The rooms can be shared or single occupied. There are also four small houses on the retreat property, surrounded by lush gardens and one big swimming pool. Some houses have two bedrooms, while others have just one bedroom. Because they are grounded and centered by their nature, horses will help you to be with your attention in the here and now. They help you develop inner strength and authenticity and show you the importance of your intentions. Yoga and meditation with horses shows how important the connection is with yourself and your environment to achieve your goals. You will create cooperation in a respectful, non-verbal communication.
With the hectic pace and demands of modern life, many people feel stressed and over-worked. Through the groundwork that you will do with the horses and during the yoga, meditation and pranayama sessions, you will discover lots of new things, like dealing with temperament, power and space.
You will also explore inner attitude, inner silence, relaxation, centering, grounding, balance, breathing, body-posture, building up of confidence, non-verbal communication, tenderness and clearness. It is not important if you have previous experience with horses, yoga or meditation, because there is lots of individual attention for everybody and the groups are small. You will go in your own pace and will be able to anchor your personal experiences, and will return home feeling more grounded, refreshed and balanced.
The underlying principle is that yoga is ‘meditation in motion’, the emphasis is on working within your own body to de-stress and regulate the internal systems, ultimately coming into a state of conscious bliss.
Tara Esther Kleij
Tara was born in Holland. In 1991, she became a certified rebirther in Haarlem and in 1995, she finished an intensive four-year massage training learning classical massage, rebalancing, and Shiatsu. She learned Thai-yoga massage in Thailand and Ayurvedic yoga massage in India. She likes to share the knowledge of this ancient practice and intermix it with a mantra and pranayama. She uses alignment principles and fun to bring in her own unique teaching style. She specializes in Hatha yoga, Flow yoga, Yin yoga, meditation and pranayama, and teach for over 25 years.
Spain's highest mountains, the "Sierra Nevada", are a magnificent backdrop to this partly undiscovered area of Spain. The region has dramatic and enchanting valleys, forests, vineyards, waterfalls, rivers and picturesque white mountain villages, all with about 325 days of sunshine per year. You can see oranges, lemons, figs and ancient olives trees with a backdrop of snowcapped mountains and there is a special light that make it a painter's and writer's paradise. From the retreat center, one can explore the area by making a walk along the riverbed, just stroll down from the retreat center. Horse riding and biking is also a possibility.
The retreat in Southern Spain is situated near a small village called Orgiva, in the Alpujarra mountain area of Andalusia. This region is renowned for its great natural beauty of snow covered high mountain peaks, rushing rivers, wild flowers, sightings of eagles as well as the goat herds. White painted villages cling to the mountain side.
Considered the capital of the Alpujarra region, Órgiva is still a very rural village with many beautiful old buildings, but there is plenty to do. More than 40 hiking trials invite you to see something of the flora and fauna in this mountainous area. You can also choose to do this from the back of a horse and on Thursday mornings is the busy weekly market with many organic and natural products.

The nourishing healthy whole food diet will do more healing from the inside out. All food is gluten, sugar and lactose on this retreat - only delicious homemade meals, using the freshest and organically grown ingredients. Breakfast can be anything from almond milk with granola, banana pancakes to crackers with avocado and cashew cheese with a smoothie prepared with superfoods. You will enjoy lots of delicious meals including soup, sushi, lasagna and desserts and you will get the chance to eat what you have created (detailed recipes will be provided for you to take home). Exotic fruits, like mangoes, papayas, and figs can be taken throughout the day.
There are lots of local produce to try out - wine, goats cheese, olives and oil, honey, dried figs, organically grown vegetables, to name a few. It is great walking country, and horse riding and hang gliding are also available. The local market town of Orgiva (on Thursday) is lively and cosmopolitan, and also attracts artists and a variety of therapists. So a good massage is available after all the exercise! Trips up the mountain can be arranged.
Lanjaron is a charming small village just 20 minutes away from the retreat venue. Mainly famous for its pure spring water that sells all over Spain, it has some mineralized springs that serve for drinking therapies. It is also a great village to get local cheese, olive oil, chocolate and other souvenirs.
There are several beaches on the Mediterranean coast to be enjoyed, within a 45 minutes’ drive from Orgiva. Nearest would be at the foot of Salobrena, a white washed village build around a castle upon a rock in the Gualdafeo river plain. Walk along the boulevards of Almunecar, which also has a Moorish castle, plenty souvenir shops and markets (regularly on Fridays and flea market on Sundays). Slightly further towards Malaga, just past La Herradura , there is the nudist beach Cantarijan nestled in natural surroundings, rock cliffs, trees and two charming beach restaurants only. For the adventurous, there is a possibility for an hour's walk along the coast over the outcrops to the next beach too
The fairy tale city of Granada crowned by the magnificent Alhambra Palace is an hour's bus or car ride away. It is a lovely medieval city to explore, located on one of the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and contains a ski resort with the highest peak in Spain, the Mulhacen (3482 meters).
You can visit the famous Alhambra, a fabulous medieval palace once built by the Arabs, and the Generalife summer palace, on the same hill, with its lush gardens with beautiful fountains and tranquil ponds. Their gypsy quarter ( Albacin / Sacremonte) is also a great place to visit with lots of flamenco music and tapas bars. Or you can get yourself pampered in the warm baths of a Hammam with beautiful colors, sensual shapes and a peaceful atmosphere that transport you back to the bygone Moorish days.
The picturesque white mountain villages in the Poquera Valley, called Pampaneira, Bubion and Capileira, are also worth a visit. They all sell local produce, food, wine and carpets and have some lovely terraces with incredible views. There is also a mountain spring beyond Capileira where you can swim in natural stone pools and stand under waterfalls. And there are also beautiful walks to be made from there.
O-Sel-Ling is a center for meditation in the Mahayana tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. You can find it on a quiet mountain slope, high above the Alpujarra valley, with views upon white mountain villages, and on clear days all the way down to the sea and Morocco. IT has a huge prayer wheel and Tara statue in a pond the place vibrates with an inspiring mix of meditative practice and nature's beauty calm.
During the retreat, there will be a choice of massage treatments at an additional cost. These include:
Thai yoga massage has its roots in yoga and Ayurveda. It combines acupressure and yogic stretches to create a powerful healing massage. The receiver has loose fitting clothes on while the therapist applies pressure along meridian lines, using hands, feet's and elbows, in combination with gentle yoga stretching. This releases blocked energy and restores balance, health and harmony. Thai yoga massage is both energizing and soothing. It increases vitality and flexibility whilst at the same time bringing a deep sense of rest. It will boost your immunity, clear out toxins and free tensions in the body. Sessions can last up to two hours and are best received on an empty stomach wearing loose comfortable clothing.
Ayurvedic yoga massage is an ancient healing system that uses deep strokes and yoga stretches to rejuvenate the body and mind. The treatment is given with hands and feet, on the floor. The Ayurvedic oils and calamus powder help to clear the pores of the skin and activate the blood circulation. The stretches and deep strokes help to release deep seated tensions, eliminate toxins, stimulate blood circulation, and activate the digestive fire.
Is a wonderful relaxing yet invigorating treatment for the feet. Anna uses a combination of hand techniques, including thumb pressure, knuckling and two handed palm movements, along with the use of a special Thai stick made from teak wood for specific acupressure. She uses traditional Thai style reflexology with Western techniques. The massage works the feet and lower legs, stimulates meridian and reflex points relating to the entire body, awakening and enlivening the bodies healing process. The use of the organic oils and strong smooth movements, leave your feet and whole being feeling totally refreshed and pampered. Anna gives the foot reflexology treatments; she studied in Thailand and is accredited by the union of Thai Traditional Medicine Society.
From the soles of your feet to the top of your head, this fusion of different cultural massage techniques is combined to make this more than just a massage. It uses essential oils to create relaxation and wellness to deeply heal your body while soothing your soul. Techniques from rebalancing, classical and Ayurvedic massage are used.
There is one direct bus to Orgiva, leaving at 15:00 from Malaga bus station and arriving at Orgiva at 18:00, stopping at every little village along the way, along the coast.
As you come out of the terminal onto the paved area into the outside air just walk straight ahead of you underneath the overhead building. There directly in front of you is the bus stop. Ask for Estacion de Autobuses. The "A" bun runs about every 35 minutes. Don't be tempted to get on a free bus that uses the stop, it's the wrong one, as it goes to the parking lot.
Once at the bus station you will need to buy a ticket for a coach to either Orgiva or Granada depending on which of the two onward routes that you choose. Buy your ticket from the "ALSA" (name of the bus company) window. Or buy your ticket online at: www.alsa.es.
There are direct buses from Malaga Airport (AGP) to Granada bus station without having to go first to Malaga bus station: busses from the airport to Granada depart at 08:30, 10:45, 11:00, 11:30, 16:00, 18:30 and 20:45 with a journey time of 2 hours and 30 minutes. The fare is 11.43 EUR single or 13.72 EUR depending on the bus.
