Do you have time off over New Year and would like to do something rather special? Satvada Retreats would love you to join our Morocco New Year yoga escape at our beautiful Riad in the heart of the Marrakesh medina, an eight-minute walk from the famous Jeema el Fna square. There will be a balance of daily yoga; two organised walks (one in the city, the other in the Atlas mountains); wonderful, traditional home cooking; time to rest and re-charge. The daily morning yoga class will be dynamic and flowing, suitable for all levels. The gentle evening class will take a slower, more meditative approach. This is for anyone seeking an exciting, relaxing and rejuvenating way to spend New Year.
With just six beautiful rooms, our host Riad - old Moroccan townhouse - has been recently restored to an unusually high standard, with exquisite attention to detail, and with high respect for the environment Neutral, calming colors make the most of Morocco's wonderful natural light (even at this time of year, when Winter day-time temperatures average around 20 degrees) and pay homage to modernism and Europe.
At the same time, splashes of color and character from cushions, Berber rugs and lamps, together with furniture supplied by local craftsmen, add an unmistakably north African flavour. The end result is effortlessly stunning. Equally important, once the door signaling the entrance to the Riad closes, the bustle and rush of the medina feel miles away, and you know you've found a true city centre retreat.
The Riad's communal areas include a library, with roaring fire, beautiful courtyard with plunge pool, and a spacious roof terrace, complete with chairs and white sun loungers for soaking up Winter rays. We will eat at the long table in the dining room, just off the courtyard - or, weather permitting, in the sunshine on the roof terrace. The six bedrooms (three of which are superior) are on the upper floors and are beautifully appointed.
They boast fireplaces, some with wood-burning stoves. have heating for cool evenings. Outside three of the rooms there are pretty tables and chairs for you to enjoy a leisurely tea or read a book. Please note, the three superior rooms will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
Daily morning yoga will be at around 09.00 - 10.30 a.m., after that we will enjoy a buffet brunch. Then, the rest of the day is allotted for you to spend it on your own, whether to explore the souks, or sunbathe on the restful roof terrace. 04.00 p.m. is the time for tea and cakes. You will have the evening yoga and meditation class at 05.30 p.m.
On new years day, we will head into the atlas mountains for an action packed afternoon for a 2 hour guided walk and lunch in a local restaurant ( additional cost approximately 20 EUR).
There is so much to love about this friendly north African country: its warmth -of both the weather and people, the wonderful food, the big horizons, the scent of orange and lemon trees, plus the astonishing variety of scenery: from mountains to desert, to spectacular beaches.
The sites in the north part of the city, such as the Medersa Ben Youssef, the Museum of Marrakesh and the Majorelle Gardens. Staying in the old medina is probably nothing like anything you have ever experienced before, so get lost a few times and soak up the ancient city life.
Dinner in the cozy dining room area, off the main courtyard, will be served at around 07.30 p.m. each evening, and we have left one evening, free for you to find your own restaurant in Marrakesh, or to join the group, if you would prefer.
Alcohol will be available to purchase with meals, and is at your own additional expense. We recommend keeping alcohol intake to a glass or two with evening meals, to maximise enjoyment of the morning yoga and to keep a quiet atmosphere!
