During this retreat, you will be staying in a standard room at Plantation Villa. The villa is a colonial home, approximately 150 years old. It was the house of the village chief, which then converted to consist of a living room, dinning hall, veranda, and open living area, all are newly renovated.

The property consists of the main villa and the lodge, each is about two minutes walking distance from each other. The lodge is the original house of the first occupier of this colonial treasure. With time, their son built a bigger home to house his expanding family. This is the villa.

The villa consists of eight rooms (two suite rooms and six deluxe rooms), the dining hall, lounge, verandas, and spa. Meanwhile, the lodge consists of six standard rooms and an open veranda. Both the villa and the lodge were renovated in the end of 2015 to 2016, and are decorated in contemporary colonial style in keeping with the age of the property, and to meet the guests' comforts and modern needs at the same time. Rooms are beautifully completed with luxury bathrooms.

Standard rooms

All of their standard rooms are in the lodge, and they all open to a beautiful open veranda. The rooms and bathrooms are completed beautifully to include modern guest requirements. The rooms have fans but they are not air conditioned.

Each guest has an initial consultation on their first day. This consultation gathers a holistic understanding of the guest covering physical ailments, areas for stress for the mind, lifestyle, and wellness objectives or requirements. You will have a minimum of four daily Ayurvedic treatments, with all types of treatments included. Some guests would also be doing walks in the village in the morning or having a swim before the treatment.

You will also be able to join their afternoon activities, which includes walks in the plantation, activities in the plantation, tree planting, cookery classes, talks with the yoga teacher or doctor etc., discussions about Ayurveda, yoga philosophy, or mindfulness, and vegetable or fruit picking activities, and rubber tapping or paddy harvesting during seasons.

Ishara De Silva
Ishara is the founder and owner of Plantation Villa. She is a regular meditation practitioner whose meditation practice has changed her life. She has practiced meditation over the last eight years and have studied, Aana-Paana Sati (watching of the breath), Metta (loving kindness meditation), relaxation, Vipassana, and insight meditation. Being a very rational thinker, Ishara helps explore the world of meditation through an explanation of the mind, its nature, and habits, and a general understanding of the mind to help begin meditation.
Yoga Alliance International (Hatha Yoga)
Gemma is an excellent, kind, and gentle teacher of yoga and meditation. The morning classes are a bit more awakening and the evening classes are slow and restorative. Gemma is a professional and can adapt her style to the guest requirement. Her meditation lessons are good and she does a particularly great moon ceremony.

During this retreat, you will be served three daily Ayurvedic meals, consisting of healthy organic meals from the garden. Plantation Villa follows a farm-to-plate policy where majority of the food they serve you come from their own organic gardens. Free from the artificial preservatives, coloring, and pesticides, all meals on site are homemade from healthy and fresh ingredients.

The hotel gardens consist of a paddy field, an organic vegetable or fruit garden, and a spice and herb garden. Anything that is not picked straight from their own organic gardens is sourced locally and ethically so that quality of the food is not compromised. Plantation Villa's doctor has reviewed their menus and ensured they are nutritionally balanced. Their meals are mainly vegetarian, and gluten and sugar free.

Once a week, they serve fish or chicken, as many of their western guests seem to struggle to maintain a vegetarian diet long term. Guests are invited to join in on harvesting activities during seasons or learn about their favorite dishes through Ayurvedic healthy cookery demonstrations and go picking the ingredients from the ground. The complete experience encourages a more hands-on approach to wellness and promotes changes to unhealthy lifestyle choices and habits for good.

If you are healthy and do not have any ailments, your treatments and herbal medicines will be according to ailments you are prone to given your physical constitution and family genetics.

Daily Ayurveda treatments include a minimum of four treatments. You are entitled to all types of treatments so if there is anything specific you want to try, please discuss with the doctor. Below are some of the treatments offered.

Abhyanga massage therapy

Body, head, foot, and face massages are administered by the specialist therapists using medicated herbal oils. The oil used and the level of intensity given to different areas of the body is varied according to the guest's body type and doshas.

Regular oil massages delays the aging process. It loosens the deep-seated toxins from joints and tissues, and releases them into system where they are eliminated, and helps to nourish, strengthen, and lubricate the joints. It makes the joints resilient to wear and tear. Besides this, the accumulated toxins from skin are also released to give healthy and clearer skin.

Akshi Tharpana

This is an eye treatment using medicated oils or aloe to help revive the eyes and eliminate eye infections and diseases.

Plantation Villa provides Panchakarma treatments which are a therapeutic way of eliminating toxic elements from the body. The body is then treated to balance out the doshas through external therapies using herbal oils and herbal packs, and internally through herbal medicine and diet.

Plantation Villa does require a minimum 21 night stay to administer Panchakarma because they need to prepare the body (Purva Karma) prior to treatments and then normalize the body afterwards.

Pinda Sweda massage therapy

This is a rejuvenating therapy, massaging the body with hot cotton boluses, made up of a combination of herbal leaves, flowers, and spices. Herbs and massage strokes are chosen according to your dosha. The herbal plants are then warmed and tied into a muslin cloth before being massaged over the body.

Pinda Sweda helps to rejuvenate, strengthen, and nourish the body. The body perspires, allowing the heat and herbs to penetrate deep into the skin. The treatment provides deep relaxation, improves blood circulation, increases suppleness, and removes joint stiffness and swelling, helping to relieve arthritis.

This is achieved through a relaxing technique in which warmed oil is poured over a clients forehead for an extended period of time. Shirodhara is traditionally used to calm the nerves, harmonize vata constitutions, restore the nerves, release stored emotions, and purify the mind. In Ayurvedic medicine, it is considered an important tool in the pursuit of higher states of consciousness.

Shirodhara has been traditionally shown to help with fatigue, mental exhaustion, anxiety, insomnia, some mental disorders, headache, excessive thinking, nervousness, and many other conditions commonly affecting persons in today's active lifestyle.

Vashpaswedanam steam bath and inhalation

Ayurvedic steam bath is a special treatment in which leaves of medicinal plants are simmered and the body is exposed to the resulting steam. It is good in flushing out impurities from the body, reducing obesity as well as excess fat, and in the treatment of skin diseases.

The treatment removes skin acne by cleansing and dilating the pores and washing out accumulation. By inhalation of steam, the respiratory system is cleaned, makes it breathe easily. It helps to slow down aging process and drooping of the skin by stimulating it.
