La Casa del Zorro enjoys a unique setting in the midst of the scenic 600.000-acre Anza-Borrego Desert, a nature-land of serenity and solitude.

Cradled by the Santa Rosa Mountains, towering six thousand feet over the desert floor, the resort is close to hiking trails and endless opportunities to explore unspoiled canyons, buttes, and mesas. Borrego Springs is one of the few "dark-sky communities" in the world. The skies are illuminated by millions of bright stars and galaxies due to night light restrictions. In spring, the pink and lavender Sand Verbena wildflowers cover acres of the desert floor.

"I was intrigued by a Sunset Magazine article about La Casa Del Zorro. For Memorial Day weekend we decided to drive out to Borrego Springs and check it out. I think we literally booked the last room! The hour and forty five minute drive from San Diego took us through some curvy roads and some pretty great scenery. La Casa Del Zorro is basically the first thing you encounter as you drive into town. Driving into the property we weren’t really impressed but you have to note this is a desert resort. There is no valet and self-parking is the norm. There is a nice fountain under the entrance canopy and a large heavy door that leads into the lobby. The lobby was very nice with arm chairs and sofa and cool stone floors. Check in went quickly and the bellman escorted on his golf cart to our room. The Casa Del Zorro property is huge at 42 acres with 44 Deluxe Rooms and 19 private haciendas. We were in the Ironwood building second floor end room 163."

"Our Deluxe King Room was impressive and LARGE! I can tell the rooms were recently redone with large heavy furnishings and a canopy bed (sans the canopy). The entranceway had a large 100 square foot tile area with a bar area complete with mini fridge (no freezer). Off to the side of the entrance way is a standard sized closet which contained robes for our use, iron and ironing board and a luggage rack. I actually counted the square foot tiles to get the size of the area and I think this area is sorely lacking a table and couple of chairs. Continuing into the large room the striking feature is the vaulted ceiling with wood beams which made the room seem even larger! There was a small “L” shaped sofa, large heavy wooden chest of drawers, wood burning fireplace (100 degrees outside meant no need for a fire) and a nice rug in front of the fireplace. The shutters on the windows and door to the balcony are a great touch! There are lighted shelves with books etc. that made the room super comfortable. The king sized bed is HIGH off the floor! Be prepared to climb in and out! There are USB outlets on one side of the bed and on our bed was a small fox stuffed toy which if you chose to keep it there is a $20 charge. By the way Zorro means Fox! Be aware there is a small stool at the foot of the bed that you probably should move away from the bed in the event of nighttime bathroom trips. The small balcony overlooking the pool has two chairs and a small table. All balconies overlook the pool which can be noisy when there are a lot of kids swimming. There was little noise that filtered into our room but I did call the front desk and requested a fan for white noise. Note: if you request a fan there will be a deposit charged to your room until you check out."

"The bathroom was huge! There is a deep soaker tub, double sink vanity, a large two person standup shower and the toilet is in a separate section with a door. A really nice touch is the night light at the bottom of the vanity so you don’t have to turn on the very bright LED lights at night."

"After stashing our stuff we went for a walk around the property. The desert landscaping is a bit stark. However, there are fountains and pools everywhere. We wandered the trails of the property and found the fitness center which is really nice with free weights and machines. There is a yoga studio and an HUGE pool for swimming laps. Walking around we saw many of the haciendas scattered around the property making me wish we had booked one! Many of the haciendas have their own pool! We also found the night sky viewing arena. More on that later. Back at the main building we found the cantina and had lunch. Bob was our bartender and very helpful with dinner recommendations and things to do. Bob even went to the lobby and got us a map and travel guide."

"We enjoyed the main building’s pool and some adult beverages from Bob while the night’s musicians were setting up for sunset happy hour. After too much sun and adult beverages, we headed to our room for a nap. Post nap we headed into Borrego Springs for dinner at Carlee’s. Upon returning to La Casa Del Zorro we stopped by the pool for a drink and the duo singing country songs (I understand there is entertainment on the weekends). Every single staff member we encountered were super nice and helpful. Now let me tell you about how the property comes alive at night! The grounds are well lit with pathway lights etc. but the most striking is the use of green lasers to light up trees and shrubs – gorgeous! The entire property changes dramatically at night complete with a huge fire pit and a circle of chairs. Before retiring we walked over to the night sky viewing arena. IT IS DARK! Please don’t take a flashlight or use your phone or you will ruin the experience for others. We sat out and just admired the night sky with too many stars to count. It was quite a serene experience and I highly recommend it!"

"Even though we had a great stay, I couldn’t give the Casa 5 stars because of a couple small things that ticked the score down. First the Wi-Fi in the room was spotty and would drop you randomly and would take a long time to reconnect. The mini-bar area of our room could have had a few more things like wine glasses and a corkscrew. Lastly, although we loved our room there could have been a separate outlet with USB connections on both sides of the bed."

"Sadly we had to return home but I must say La Casa Del Zorro left an impression on us! The very friendly staff, the grounds were huge and the room we had was great. We definitely will be returning for a hacienda stay!"

    "Room Tip: Book a Hacienda!"

"My husband and I are long time San Diego residents and always wanted to try this hotel. We chose to go Memorial Day weekend, although we had low expectations given the mixed reviews on this property. We are seasoned travelers world wide while staying in a range of accommodations from B & B to mega resorts. As you can see from my badge count, I have hundreds of reviews that also range from poor to excellent and I think I can be accurate to assess and share experiences. I can say with all honestly that Casa Del Zorro exceeded our expectations and is quite worthy of a 5 star review. The front desk was kind and professional in checking us in upon our arrival. Our room was a deluxe pool view king that was spacious, clean, well decorated and extremely comfortable. We had a lovely balcony with outdoor furniture. There was a cute wet bar area with bottled water inside our small refrigerator. We had a coffee maker and a locking safe for valuables. The hotel provides clean bathrobes and slippers in the closet. The wifi speed was fine. The bed itself was high quality, as well as the sheets and pillows. The sleep quality was amazing as we had one of the best nights of sleep we could ever recall having in a hotel away from home. Our newly remodeled bathroom was large and beautiful with a huge marble and glass shower, as well as an oversized soaking bath tub that could probably hold a man that is over 6 feet tall. Good water pressure and hot water. The bathroom amenities were lovely, along with make up mirror, hair dryer and pool towels. Attention to detail was quite obvious as they even provided a low level night light under the sink cabinet to assist with any late visits to the restroom. The pool area was clean and provided comfortable patio furniture and cabana tents with shade. Each pool also provides beach balls for guests to use. The pool water temperature was heated to perfection, not too warm or cold but just right to dive in without taking your breath away. The swim was just as luxurious as the bedding! It is also important to note that there are many pools on this property so you can pick and choose a pool that suits your needs for either family atmosphere or quiet adult time. Clean Jacuzzi tubs for soaking are also available near the pools and they are heated to a comfortable temperature. The room air conditioner worked well. We had a second floor room which does require going up a flight of stairs. The car was parked close enough to the building so we could transfer our bags easily, although I am sure the staff can use the cart to deliver your bags. The grounds are lovely, taking into account that the desert environment is not a good spot for lush greenery that can thrive in severe heat. Between pools was a lovely stream and pond with koi fish and frogs. Signs are posted everywhere to assist you in getting to places around the hotel. We enjoyed a lovely evening at poolside. Although we made a dinner reservation the dining facility had enough areas open to seat people and the hostess even gave us options for indoor seating or outdoor seating. She let us take our pick of tables! We could choose between soft live piano music in the interior dining area, or outside on the rose terrace patio or outside around the pool. We chose to enjoy a country western duo playing music out in the pool area, which added some fun and entertainment to the dining experience. Our food, drinks and service were all very good. There is a cute fox den bar close by where you can belly up for you favorite cocktail. In the evening hours the Casa del Zorro is lit up with green twinkle lights that make the entire property seem magical. They provide a big fire ring pit (even on hot evenings) and we noticed many families using this spot to roast their marshmallows. What a nice touch for the kids. The icing on the cake is a personal ride in the golf cart (by Alex) to go off property and away from the lights in order to view the night sky that was filled with so many stars! To end our overnight stay we enjoyed a good quality breakfast with attentive service. Food price points here on a bit higher, but you have to take into account that all goods must be trucked into the desert. This hotel does an excellent job in providing a great place for visitors to enjoy this state park destination. Yes, it is rural (with sand) and not a place full of sexy bling but I would come back to this spot anytime. I cannot say enough good things about our experience here. I do not understand the negative reviews or feedback that seems so critical or petty about such a special place. Do not hesitate in making a decision to stay here. Casa is simple but richly comfortable with some touches of elegance thrown in, which makes for a unique trip to Borrego Springs. The town itself is just a short 5 to 10 min ride, although not much there and no reason to venture far from this wonderful resort. Ram Hill golf is right next door."

"Room Tip: Second floor is best if you don't mind the stairs."
