You will be accommodated at the Burren Yoga and Meditation Center during this holiday. You will have the possibility to choose from a shared room, a twin or a double room, and a single private room. The center can sleep up to 21 persons, but for the retreats, the maximum is 15.
The beds have been individually handed carved by their local carpenter Johnny Ray. The shared accommodation has bunk beds. These are not the usual bunk beds, the top bunk bed is hand carved and suspended from the ceiling. The lower bunk bed is completely independent of the upper bunk bed with plenty of headroom in between.
The mattresses are very high-quality orthopedic mattresses, with a top layer of memory foam, ensuring one of the most comfortable nights of sleep. The bed linen is high thread count Egyptian cotton and lovely to slip into after a full day of yoga, meditation, outdoor activities, amazing vegetarian food, and laughing and socializing with like-minded people. All the beds are freshly made up before you arrive.
You will be supplied with a bath and hand towel. All the bedrooms have underfloor heating and are warm and cozy even in the winter time. The center has four shared bathrooms, each with a shower, hand basin, and toilet and an extra toilet shared between the 15 retreat participants. They do not have any en-suite bathrooms at the yoga center.
The retreat includes meditation classes and yoga Nidra deep relaxation. This course is for people who prefer a more traditional approach to yoga and a more gentle approach than Ashtanga. There will be plenty of outdoor activities in the Burren and surrounding areas.
Dave’s classes begin with very gentle loosening up postures which help prepare the body for the stronger postures which are introduced after a number of months. He takes care that each person understands each posture and gives advice on adapting the posture to suit your own level and where you are at in this present moment.
Dave introduces Pranayama right from day one, and you will be shown how to use different parts of the lungs for the breathing practices and also how to incorporate awareness of the breath into one’s yoga practice. The breath is one of the most important keys to bringing your awareness inwards, to get in touch with your more subtle inner self. A large emphasis is placed on the awareness of the practitioner rather than their physical ability.
His experience with Iyengar and Astanga yoga bring a detailed approach to correct alignment of the body in order to assume the posture while respecting the limits of one’s body. This weekend will also include an introduction to mindful breath awareness focussed meditation, and a deepening of the practice for those who practice already.
On Saturday, Grainne will lead the group on a guided walk in one of the special locations in the Burren. Sometimes, you climb one of the hills, or possibly a walk in one of the forests or sometimes you go for a walk along Fanore beach and out onto the headland which leads to Black Head lighthouse. There are many places to choose from to go on our outings, so Dave usually uses his local knowledge and his experience of predicting the weather and will pick out the best location based on the interests of the group and what the weather will be like.
Dave aims to teach you a core amount of physical postures, breathing techniques and meditation which you will be able to practice on your own each day after you complete the weekend.
This retreat consists of an inviting and uplifting timetable over the weekend of:
On Saturday, you will enjoy a guided outing around the area of Burren. Dave, who founded the center in 1999, will bring you and the rest of the group to a special location within the Burren hills or else besides the sea.
Dave is the founder of Burren Yoga and has over 30 years of experience in yoga and meditation. He followed his vision, designed and built Burren Yoga in 1999 wishing to provide an ideal environment for people to learn and deepen their practice of yoga and meditation.
During this retreat, you will be staying at the Burren Yoga and Meditation Center, in Kinvara, Ireland. The center was designed and built using timber-framed buildings, which have ceiling and floor windows that provide passive solar heating and amazing views over the Burren Hills. The buildings are super insulated and also have underfloor heating throughout so that they are warm and cozy all year round.
The Burren is located on the Wild Atlantic Way, on the west coast of Ireland. The Burren is steeped in ancient history and the Poulnabrone dolmen is over 5000 years old. The area is known for its huge numbers of ancient stone forts, dolmens, wedge tombs, and thousands of ancient monuments. From the Burren rock, you will see the wildflowers, experience the silence, and truly appreciate the beneficial effects this special place on the west coast of Ireland can have on you.
You will enjoy daily delicious vegetarian meals during this holiday. Each evening, Gearoid, the cook who used to work at a Hare Krishna restaurant in New York will weave together the best of ingredients, using locally produced organic vegetables, fresh herbs, and spices and will create these amazing dishes.
The food is a combination of the best healthy vegetarian ingredients, combined carefully with fresh herbs and spices to produce amazing vegetarian food which is a delight to the taste buds and the enjoyment of eating.
While on your guided outing, you will stop for lunch at one of the best local restaurants or cafes, which is a great way to sample the best of the local cuisine in the Burren area. Dave, your guide, knows all the best places to eat and is always ready to help with suggestions on the best dishes in each of the local cafes.
You can enjoy a local dish at the nearby villages of Kinvara and Gort at your own expenses and learn about the Ireland culture and customs.
