During this retreat in Niyagama House, you will stay either in a single room, a double room, or a twin suite. At Niyagama House, you will experience a perfect blend of Eastern hospitality and Western comforts full of tranquility and relaxation. The rooms have king-sized beds, while the suites do offer one long kingsize bed and one queen-sized bed each.

Enjoy comfortable mattresses, soft cotton linen, and pillows in different sizes, air conditioning, mosquito nets, a ceiling fan, elegant wooden furniture with spacious wardrobes in the traditional Sri Lankan style, granite floors, ensuite bathrooms with large "rain dance" showers, hand showers, high pressure hot and cold water, soft towels, and hairdryer. All rooms are non-smoking rooms. Smoking is also not allowed throughout the whole house and the pool area, but you will find a “secret” smoking spot below the pool area.

The rooms and suites offer free Wi-Fi, a mini fridge, daily complimentary drinking water, a personal electric laptop-size safe, and a telephone that connects you with the kitchen and the office. Other services are the nightly turn-down service, daily housekeeping, laundry, and ironing service. Niyagama House is a courtyard house with a serene, soothing atmosphere that was built in 2012 in the traditional style.

The inner courtyard, high ceilings, airy rooms, and verandas in combination with plenty of fresh air and tropical sun make this house a comfortable and tranquil retreat. For a healthy flow of energy, the rules of the Sri Lankan Feng Shui were followed. A tradition still respected here by many people. Three verandas, the lounge with its sunset balcony, and the roof terrace with a 360-degree panoramic view offer plenty of space to relax.

From the south veranda, you will step into the large garden that surrounds the entire house. There are growing tropical flowers between shady trees. The jewel of the garden is the large and chlorine-free 18-meter pool, purified with an eco-friendly copper-silver-ionization method. The pool is ideal for some vigorous exercise if that is what you need or for just relaxing and cooling down in the shallow areas.

Program

Re-energize your body, revitalize your mind, and relax your soul with an early guided meditation, followed by the morning Hatha yoga class. Do 90 minutes of yoga in the morning and be completely flexible with the planning of the day. Be it relaxing at an 18-meter-long pool or an excursion to the Unesco World Heritage Site Galle Fort. This retreat offers energizing Hatha yoga after a guided morning meditation. Combine the movement and asana with your breath and discover the edges and the limits without crossing the line and doing too much.

Become stronger, more flexible, and energized. The class starts with slow ‘warm-up’ sun salutations, followed by a quicker Vinyasa flow, as well as asanas for strengthening and flexibility. The class ends with a deep relaxing Shavasana. Elke de Silva often likes to call your Hatha morning classes “The natural Hot yoga classes”, as the sun is shining into the room while you are moving from posture to posture. You will energize your body and look forward to the next ‘towel asana’ which is rolling down, grabbing the towel, rolling up, and using it.

"Hatha" means yoga in which the aim is to unify the two energies of ‘Ha’ (the left, cool energy of the moon) and ‘Tha’ (the right, hot energy of the sun) and merge them in the center of the body. There are no excursions included in this retreat package, but Niyagama House can give you plenty of tips on how to explore Galle Fort and the beaches of the Indian Ocean. Especially solo traveling ladies like the tuk-tuk service. Your driver brings you to your desired destination and will pick you up at a time that suits you best. It is a safe and very comfortable service if you are traveling by yourself.

Retreat location

This retreat will be held at Niyagama House in Galle, Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka has an unbelievable abundance of tropical evergreen nature, beautiful beaches, impressive mountains, marvelous sunsets, and countless waterfalls with crystal-clear water, exotic flora and fauna, and wonderful people with honest smiles, extraordinary helpfulness, and happy mood. Niyagama House is located nine kilometers inland from the coastal city of Galle and the historic, charming Galle Fort and 30 minutes away from the southern beaches of the Indian Ocean.

In the tea plantation around the house, which belongs to the property, tea pickers harvest daily new tender leaves. These are collected by the tea factory truck in the afternoon. In the “tea nursery” the new, small plants are growing. And in the organic garden, a variety of tropical fruits, vegetables, and herbs are well looked after. To stretch out your legs beside the yoga classes, there is a beautiful five-kilometer round walk through the neighborhood: explore more tea plantations, farming, tropical nature, little houses, and friendly children waving at you.

Food

During this retreat, you will be served a cup of tea or coffee before the morning yoga. A big breakfast is served until 10:30 am and offers Western choices plus a daily special Sri Lankan breakfast dish.

Included in your retreat package is daily hydration: one king coconut, one herbal tea, one lime water and one ginger water.

For all retreat guests we do offer a special HEALTHY HALF-BOARD Option for which you can decide her on your arrival day: For lunch or dinner we offer you a vegetarian meal with a soup or salad followed by a vegetable curry with two vegetables of your choice, papadams and chutney.

The restaurant is open until 10 pm and you can order lunch or dinner whenever you are hungry. Snacks and juices can also be served at the pool and there is the option to book Half Board and Full Board.

The food in Niyagama House is prepared freshly with most of its ingredients coming from local farmers or their organic garden.

You will find plenty of vegetarian options next to fresh fish, seafood, and chicken on the menu. They do not serve alcohol, but you can bring your own and enjoy it wherever you want to.

Niyagama House offers menu options for many dietary preferences, from delicious salads and raw food preparations to fresh juices. Please just let them know and they will create some tasty solutions.

If you are feeling stuck, or if there is always the same situation or person that triggers you, a personal coaching session can be eye-opening. Take valuable insights with you from this session with Elke, who is a Certified Holistic Coach, and continue back home. The path is the goal.

An EFT Tapping Session

The Emotional Freedom Technique is a wonderful self-help tool that instantly releases stress, helps with all kinds of phobias, and supports transforming negative emotions into positive feelings.

In 2019 Elke was trained in the UK by one of the 20 Master EFT Teachers, Karl Dawson, who learned it from the founder of EFT in the USA, Gary Craig.

Coconut and Curry Class

Learn how to prepare fresh coconut milk; one of the basic elements in every curry. The chef will show you how to prepare delicious curry with ingredients that you also find in your supermarket at home. Enjoy your curries later on at dinner time. 40 USD per person.

Guided Tea Plantation Tour

Discover tea, cinnamon and pepper secrets.

Walk one hour in the afternoon with our tea plantation manager, learn about the plantation work, and ask all the questions you have. Enjoy a good cup of black tea fresh from the tea factory after the tour. 15 USD per person.

Local places to visit

Enjoy a tuktuk ride to Galle, swim in the Indian Ocean, observe wild elephants, or meditate at a waterfall. Seize the day and make it special. Niyagama House is situated in a perfect spot from where you easily can head out to explore the area and be back in the relaxing tranquility of nature before nighttime. Our experienced drivers take you in a tuktuk or in our van to your desired destinations. Either they stay with you or they pick you up later, a special service that our solo female travelers appreciate a lot.

Galle Fort, the charming World Unseco Heritage Site: Visit the charming Galle Fort, book a guided tour, or stroll through the beautiful old streets on your own. Have dinner in one of the restaurants that reside in former old merchant houses or buy some souvenirs and discover the markets and shops in Galle Town on your way back. Tuktuk both ways (fitting one or two people) = approx. 12 USD.

Unawatuna Beach for swimming, snorkeling and diving: A 30-minute tuktuk drive through paddy fields and along the coastal shore brings you to a bay with gentle waves which is safe to swim in. Discover the small shops, a good restaurant or a diving school. Your driver will pick you up whenever you like it. Tuktuk both ways (fitting one or two people) = approx. 16 USD.

Temple, tea and turtles: Dive deeper into the Sri Lankan culture and nature. Visit Yatagalla Temple, one of the oldest Buddhist temples in the Galle area. Next stop is the Handunugoda Tea Factory. Learn about tea processing and have a wonderful tea tasting. On your way back you can visit a Turtle Sanctuary in Habaraduwa, where you can see 5 of the 7 turtle species worldwide. Tuktuk per hour roundtrip (fitting one or two people) = approx. 11 USD.

Surfing Class at Devata Beach: Ride the wave and have some fun. In this bay are several surfing schools located, teaching you how to become a surf pro. The teachers are with you in the water, assisting you with the right timing and giving you a thumb’s up for every tiny success. Surfing Class: approx. 16 to 20 USD / Tuktuk both ways (fitting one or two people) = approx. 14 USD.

Golfing at Koggala Lake: A golf course around a working airforce runway. The Eagles’ Catalina Golf Course offers 9 holes and you can play alternate tees on the same green to make it 18. The location is quite unique and interesting plus you might see the occasional crocodile in the river that runs on one side. They offer caddies, rental clubs, buggies, and a clubhouse with a view of the lake. Prices upon request.

Walk to the waterfall in the Kanneliya National Park: Pure nature, big rocks. and the sound of running water. A one-hour drive in our van will bring you inland, you enter the park and a ranger will walk with you on a safe path through the jungle to a waterfall, where you can rest, relax, and enjoy nature all around you. A perfect add-on is a tasty picnic-to-go from our kitchen. Prices upon request.

Elephant Jeep Safari in the Udawalawe National Park: Visit the largest living and very intelligent land animals. The best time for this half-day trip is to start at around 5 am in the morning, while enjoying a breakfast-to-go from our kitchen. The safari jeep is waiting for you, when you arrive at the park and immediately can enter the world of these wonderful animals. Enjoy three to four hours driving through nature in the early morning hours. Prices upon request.
