The Dalai Lama said, "Once a year go to a place you have never been before". This quote encapsulates my desire to travel. Travel is intensified living. Traveling to Sicily was not only to enhance my spiritual path but ultimately to visit the country of my ancestors.
I am so beyond grateful to Bookyogaretreats.com and Floripa Surf House. These words find you with respect, reverence and gratitude. Quite simply, spending a week at Floripa Surf House in Sicily enhanced and changed my life. I traveled to Floripa simply for a yoga retreat but received so much more. Staying for 1 week at Floripa was just the right amount of time to relax, surf and sightsee. Travel by bus was easy to other cities in Sicily from Pozzallo which was 7 kilometers from Floripa.
The kindness and positive energy were palpable on arrival. Ameriga and Ettore are amazing hosts who made me feel at home right away. At Floripa everything is a celebration of life. The Shakti or fullness of being was present in every moment. The sea and beach were just a few meters from the B&B. Surf boards and wet suits were provided for rent at a convenient price. The beauty of the nature surrounding was indescribable. The rooms were spacious, cleaned everyday and extremely comfortable. A delicious home-cooked breakfast was provided every morning and food requests were welcome. Ettore, Ameriga and Giovanna were so beyond kind in every moment. It was so wonderful not to have to worry about anything. It was true peace. I have a new awareness for the amount of attention to detail and prompt customer service.
This yoga retreat in Sicily allowed me to question where I am in my spiritual path. We have learned to identify with our emotions rather than feel them. Yet at Floripa, emotions were celebrated and embraced. The ability to be in awe of nature's every moment was pure bliss. Watching the clouds drift by, the current come in and out like that of a breath - allowed me to meditate on the idea that nature is in no rush - it is divine in all of its moments.
In our chaotic society we tend to distance ourselves from the perfection of nature. Yet, this is unnecessary and limiting. Ameriga taught me the Yama Satya or Truthfulness during our yoga sessions. She emphasized that truthfulness is not only to be true to yourself but true in your words. A Niyama Ameriga taught was Santosha or Contentment, allowing me to be aware of the path I am on and whether or not this path is influenced by outside pressures.
The Vinyasa yoga every morning was the perfect way to start the day. Beginning by saluting the kiss of the Sicilian sun was pure bliss. It allowed me to go to the bliss state on the subtle layer. Then, every evening we ended with a relaxing and peaceful Yin yoga practice by the light of the moon and the singing of the birds to meditate on. It was a true embrace and love of nature in every moment. There are no words in English that can express how I feel for Sicily and Floripa Surf House so I will say it in Italian: Il mio amore che mai finirà per Sicilia. Grazie mille! The light within me recognizes the light within you. Namaste.
