But, how do you know if you need a detox? Here are some signs you should pay attention to unexplained fatigue, anxiety, allergies, poor sleep quality, chronic diseases, bags under the eyes, menstrual problems and painful bowel movements, to mention some.

Have you experienced any of those? If so, fret not. A detox program is all about helping the body activate its natural cleansing process; while the body can indeed eliminate toxins by itself through the lungs, kidneys, lymphatic system, intestines and skin, for these organs to effectively do their job they need to be in good shape.

So, unless you’re isolated living the farm life, cultivating your own food and away from all toxins, chances are that you need to help your body detoxify. What better place to do it than a detox yoga retreat?

During a detox yoga holiday, you’ll optimize your body’s natural detoxification system by resting your organs through fasting and providing your body with natural healthy foods such as fruits, veggies, juices, special teas and smoothies.

  • Ayurveda

Ayurveda

There are many detox treatments that are based on Ayurvedic principles, two of the most common are Panchakarma and the Kitchari Cleanse.

Panchakarma means “five therapies”. So, as you can imagine, this detoxification treatment combines five therapeutic treatments which are Vamana (emesis), Virechana (purgation), Nasya (nose cleansing), Basti (enema) and Raktamoskshana (blood cleansing).

Kitchari means “mixture”. This blend usually consists of a combination of rice and beans, which is believed to help the digestive system to rest and reset.

  • Cupping therapy

This is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which a therapist places special cups on the skin for a few minutes in order to create suction. Famous athletes like Michael Phelps have used it. It’s said to help with muscle relaxation, pain relief and blood flow. It’s also believed to help remove energy blockages and allow the natural energy flow.

  • Acupuncture

Acupuncture is widely practiced in China and its neighboring countries. However, this form of alternative medicine has gained popularity in the western world too. It consists of needles that are inserted into several points in the body. People use it to promote the circulation of life force energy, relieve pain and improve digestion.

  • Traditional Sauna

This detox method is believed to have its origins in Finland. In the past, it was considered a sterile place for childbirth, therefore, it was very common for Finnish babies to be born in a sauna. Nowadays, a traditional sauna is used to balance health problems such as hypertension, fatigue and discomfort. Since the intense heat in a sauna makes you sweat, it helps you remove toxic agents such as lactic acid, sodium and uric acid from the body.

  • Gua Sha
