In this Rest and Rejuvenate Path, you will have lots of time to relax while having the option to be active in the community when you choose. Designed for short stays, the program includes a 90-minute massage session and a one-on-one session with a life coach, wellness professional, yoga therapist, or meditation teacher. Together, we’ll create the perfect plan for you to get a taste of New Life and the Serra da Estrela. You will leave feeling refreshed and wondering when you’ll be able to come back for another visit!
Respite and solitude. Connection and conviviality. At New Life, you won’t have to choose between these elemental parts of what makes you human. With nature right on your doorstep, you’ll rest in the rhythms of the Portuguese countryside, surrounded by sunshine, birdsong, and exquisite views.
The accommodation and facilities are designed to give you the perfect blend of privacy and community. Embodying modern comforts while celebrating traditional Portuguese architectural styles and materials, the living spaces invite you to feel ease, openness, and harmony in both mind and body.
The accommodation is made up of ten traditional stone quintas remodelled into four residential clusters, offering a total of 49 private ensuite units.
In addition, the facilities include:
All the accommodation at New Life Portugal consists of ensuite rooms. Sheets, pillowcases, towels, and duvets are provided. There are reading lamps, a refrigerator, sink, floor heating, and private bathrooms with warm showers in every room. Soap, shower gel, facial tissues, and a refillable water pitcher are also available for your convenience. Hair dryers are provided upon request. Rooms are professionally cleaned and sheets and towels changed once per week.
Start your day feeling refreshed with group meditation or yoga. Breakfast in Noble Silence offers the opportunity to practice mindfulness as you soak in the serene atmosphere. Connect with the rest of the community at the morning meeting, before attending a one-on-one session with a wellness professional or having time to yourself to enjoy the excellent facilities.
After a nourishing lunch, you’ll be pampered with a massage, or have more ‘me-time’ to relax. A light dinner is followed by community-led activities such as support groups, movie and game nights, life story sharing, or calming evening practices. Excursions and other activities are typically scheduled on weekends.
Guests can choose from a wide array of field trips, sports, excursions, tours, workshops, and more. During these activities, you’ll be able to enjoy the beauty of the Serra da Estrela and learn about nature, conservation, biodiversity, culture, and heritage. Some of the activities are included as part the wellness programs, while others are available as extra options.
Karin has a lifetime of experience as a psychologist and mentor to clinical teams, in program design and implementation and has taught psychology as an adjunct professor and facilitated MBSR groups for many years. Previously the Program Director and Clinical Supervisor to our Thailand program, Karin is excited to bring all the lessons learned from that experience to the Portugal project, while also carefully preserving the profoundly effective core-components of our New Life model: engaged community living, compassionate emotional support and a contemplative culture.
Daral comes to New Life Portugal from a private therapy practice in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where she works with trauma, addiction, depression, anxiety, burnout and other forms of emotional and social distress or development. Her toolbox is eclectic, integrating narrative therapy, trauma theory, cognitive behavioral interventions, and other modalities. She loves group work and knows the power of community to help personal change happen. She is thrilled at the prospect of living and working on a campus that’s both new and old in a natural setting of extraordinary beauty.
Tamas brings extensive experience as a coach and facilitator in leadership, personal development and team building to his role as Wellness Coordinator at New Life Portugal. When working with people in transformative individual and group processes, he enjoys creating experiences which leave clients with a slight shift in how they look at themselves and the world around them. He enjoys observing how people unfold on such journeys. This includes the growth they manifest through compassionately accepting things they can’t change, and learning to respond in healthier ways to challenges.
Stroll quietly under chestnut groves. Pause to examine wildflowers at your feet. Stop for long moments to listen to spring water skipping over rocks. Bask in the warm glow of sunset as you breathe in the Serra Da Estrela air. There’s no place to go and nowhere to be – except right here, right now, as you immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the mountain sanctuary.
The revitalising power of nature is deeply embedded into your wellness experience with New Life Portugal. Depending on which of the four paths you choose, participate in mindful walks, forest bathing, group excursions, expeditions, and much more.
Both within and outside of the programs, enjoy a wide range of leisure activities in the surrounding natural park, including swimming, kayaking, hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, and birdwatching. Other possibilities include exploring medieval villages such as Linhares and Piodão, and winter sports like skiing and snowboarding.
The Serra Da Estrela Natural Park is Portugal’s oldest and largest natural conservation area, covering approximately 1,000 square kilometres. It was designated a UNESCO Global Geoparks site in 2019. The highest point of the mountain range rises 1,993 meters above sea level and is continental Portugal’s tallest peak. Three rivers flow from the Serra Da Estrela mountain range: the Mondego, the Zêzere, and the Alva. The region features unique glacial valleys, abundant flora and fauna, and charming medieval villages.
The peaceful sanctuary spans 29.65 acres and rises 900 metres above sea level. There is a lake on the property and many more rivers, waterfalls, and lakes nearby for swimming or kayaking. Additionally, the natural park features 375 kilometers of marked trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horse riding. Nature enthusiasts will love observing over 150 species of birds, foraging for wild mushrooms, and spotting hundreds of species of trees, herbs, and flowers.
The aroma of herbs freshly picked from the garden, faintly scenting your fingers. The sweet burst of a tomato which hung on a vine mere moments ago. When you bring the practice of mindfulness to what and how you eat, what was previously just a part of your daily routine can become a source of wonder; the simplest act, a form of self-care.
The whole-person approach to wellness includes nourishing your body in healthful ways. During your stay, enjoy tasty and beneficial meals containing plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, low GI foods, and probiotics. They serve minimal processed foods.
In addition to being based on the latest research on nutrition and mental health, the menu features plenty of fresh produce grown on their own land. They proudly patronise local artisans and small businesses and showcase regional Portuguese produce and dishes.
They try their best to cater to a diverse range of dietary preferences. However, due to the large range of ingredients used in the kitchen, they are not able to guarantee that all the dishes are allergen-free. If you have special requirements, please feel free to get in touch to see how they can best meet your needs.
At New Life Portugal, they serve three buffet-style meals per day. The dishes feature plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and lean proteins. The food is mostly vegan or lacto-ovo vegetarian. Meals may also include light meat or fish options from time to time. Dishes will be marked clearly to show if they are vegan, vegetarian, or contain meat or fish.
