The Bala Brook is a small residential yoga centre on Dartmoor close to the large village of South Brent and about 8 miles from Totnes in South Devon. It feels secluded and quiet and is not really within walking distance of anywhere apart from amazing Dartmoor and a nearby reservoir.

The center has a fantastic recently refurbished and extended yoga room (with under floor heating), a large kitchen-diner / conservatory area, library and common sitting areas. Accommodation is simple, comfortable and warm if necessary. Retreat prices reflect the standards.

There is a very large garden with fantastic trees and the brook flowing through. There is a little waterfall at the top of the garden. It is easy to walk directly out on to the moor from several directions or to take lowland wooded walks.


Vary from single rooms with en suite bathroom to simpler rooms with shared bathroom arrangements. There are not separate prices for the standard of rooms, except the library single room which is the price of a shared room, as this would be very complicated. All the rooms are of a decent standard but the larger en suite rooms will go on a first come first served basis. Some of the shared rooms are large and en-suite.

There is enough room for eight - ten people to have single rooms and for two to share, though up to four rooms can share.



Over the four days, you will explore dynamic and quiet practices to different effect including asanas (postures), pranayama (breathing practices), deep relaxation, body centering, and meditation. All practices are designed to bring you to your own energised and calm centre.

Included excursions

Walks will be led some afternoons. There are a range of possibilities from half an hour up to 2-3 hours either on high moorland, low woodland or up to a nearby reservoir.

Atmospheric and wonderful, The Bala Brook retreat centre is situated in a green river valley. Ypu can walk out onto the high moor from the house easily. In warm weather, wild swimming in one of Dartmoor's pools can be possible.

The Bala Brook retreat centre is in Dartmoor National Park and on the edge of the open moor. There are thirty five acres of delightful gardens, fields, mature oak trees and woodland adjoining the waterfalls of Bala Brook, which tumbles down to join the river Avon. The place is perfect for walks in the nature.

In Devon, all meals provided are vegetarian; and teas, coffees, and snacks are available at all times for free. Some special diets can be catered for, for example vegan and gluten free; anything more complex than that then please ask, Neville Cregan can be flexible up to a point, but there is only one cook and not a fully staffed kitchen.

Thai massages and reflexology sessions

During the yoga retreat, you can take optional Thai massages or reflexology in addition to the yoga and meditation classes.

Please book treatments in advance if possible. Last minute bookings are only sometimes possible. There are options on some afternoons and some evenings. There may also be options for Shiatsu massage too - please ask in advance.

Visit the library of Bala Brook

During this retreat, you will have use of the library at the Bala Brook retreat centre which has some fascinating yoga books, old and new; general interest books and books on Dartmoor and the surroundings.

Walk on the Moor of Dartmoor

The retreat is located within the Dartmoor National Park; therefore, there are thirty five acres gardens, fields and woodland waiting to be explored by walks. A gate from the meadow leads out onto the wide open Moor. From the front its a short walk up the lane to Shipley Bridge and pedestrian track leading up to the Avon reservoir and higher open Moor. An exhilarating walk Northwards brings strong hikers to Princetown in the centre of Dartmoor.

Another walk westwards leads to the famous ancient oaks at Piles Wood alongside the exquisite river Erme. These two walks are long ones and not included in the walking itinerary that you can optionally take together with Neville. There are other, gentler walks around, some through woodland that you will enjoy under his guidance.

How to get there

Driving directions from Exter

  • Driving south after Exeter, leave the A38 at Marley Head, (north-east of South Brent).
  • Wriggle North - Westwards around lanes following signs to Avon Dam.
  • Arrive at Shipley Bridge public car park, beside river Avon.
  • At Shipley Bridge, cross the River Avon, follow the lane turning around to the left, southwards over a cattle grid.
  • After 2 minutes down the lane, go past one farm on your right, down a little hill over a little bridge and look out for Bala Brook sign on your right beside a timber gateway. This is the second habitation on your right after leaving Shipley bridge.
  • Do not use the Bala Brook postcode as it is shared with other locations. Use the GPS co-ordinates instead.
  • If you get lost please call the land line above rather than knocking on doors.

Arrival by train

You can take a train until Totnes station then you will have to take a taxi to get to Bala Brooke.

Taxis from Totnes cost 20 - 25 GBP. Lift shares can often but not always be arranged through if you let Neville Cregan Yoga Teacher and Thai Massage Therapist know in advance.

  • A reservation requires a deposit of 40% of the total price.
  • The deposit is non-refundable, if the booking is cancelled.
  • The rest of the payment should be paid 30 days before arrival.
