What is Kundalini yoga?

Kundalini Yoga is called the yoga of awareness. It is a dynamic, powerful tool that is designed to give you an experience of your soul. In 1968, Yogi Bhajan brought Kundalini yoga and meditation to the West. It was an ancient technology which had been honed and refined in secret, over countless generations of masters and initiates in the temples and monasteries of Northern India, Tibet, and Nepal. It is the most powerful and inclusive of all yoga practices and Yogi Bhajan believed strongly that everyone should have the opportunity to participate and to enjoy its incredible benefits.

Kundalini yoga is a physical and meditative discipline that combines postures (asanas), breath (pranayama), and the chanting of mantras. Kundalini refers to the energy that lays dormant at the base of the spine. The word Kundalini literally translates as a “coiled female serpent.” Through the practice of yoga, this energy is raised and travels up the spine, through the chakras, creating an overall sense of well being and a heightened sense of awareness.

During this process, blocks, and resistances are overcome, and your energy is raised to higher frequencies, opening your awareness to expanded realities. The goal is to create a conscious connection with the divine - a union between physical reality and god-consciousness, universal energies and the soul, the finite and the infinite, which can be achieved when this energy reaches the crown chakra at the top of the head.

What are the goals of practicing Kundalini yoga?

The primary objective is to awaken the full potential of human awareness in each individual; that is, recognize your awareness, refine that awareness, and expand that awareness to your unlimited self. This will create the power to deeply listen, cultivate stillness, feel abundantly creative, and experience the sublime sacredness of being alive!

How is Kundalini yoga different from traditional yoga asanas?

The focus of Kundalini yoga inspired by Yogi Bhajan is on one’s personal experience and awareness through the practice of kriya and naad. You awaken the Kundalini in order to be able to call upon the full potential of the nervous and glandular systems and to balance the subtle system of chakras and meridians within the body. “Kriya” is an orchestrated pattern of movements, sound, pranayama, mudras, concentration, and meditation that automatically guide the energies of the body and the mind to a specific result or change of consciousness.

The benefits of kriyas are considerably greater than doing random postures - it is much more precise, and allows you to target specific benefits and work on exactly those aspects of yourself that need work at the current time. Some of the sequences can be very intense and physically demanding. However, there are many less demanding but equally effective exercises suitable both for beginners and for others who, by reason of physiology, age, or disability may need to follow a more moderate and less intense form of practice.

It is the ideal form of yoga for people who want both an immediate feel good effect and also the long term benefits of enjoying a relaxed and uplifted consciousness.

Can anyone practice Kundalini yoga?

Kundalini yoga is both safe and effective and can be practiced by almost anyone, no matter their age, fitness level, occupation, and experience. If you can breathe, you can do it!

"I had an absolutely perfect time at Naya. It was like I had stepped into my own personal paradise. My retreat was exactly what the doctor ordered - I was fully chilled and recharged by the end and ready to explore Bali. Amazing food, delightful & helpful staff, great yoga classes, gorgeous location. I couldn't recommend it more - perfection."

"I had the most pleasant experience ever! The service was fantastic, the whole experience was so seamless, it almost felt like I was close to home. I thought the program was very well thought out from the delicious juices, private yoga sessions, and not to mention the amazing spa services. I’m back at home feeling recharged and relaxed - just what you need from a break!"

"I would highly recommend Naya Ubud for the yoga retreat and a proper getaway to sit back and relax from the hustle and bustle. I stayed in villa Naomi for the three days and two nights yoga retreat. First off, I really enjoyed the warm welcome of the staffs, especially Wayan Suti, who is very accommodating and polite. The place is also very well kept, clean, and has all the basic amenities and toiletries you need. Not forgetting to mention are the heartwarming and patient yoga Instructors; Rebecca and Jessica who took time to understand their customers and tailor their classes. Rebecca taught us about how the simplicity of Kundalini yoga plays a good wake up call to energize your body in the morning. Jessica did a great job to understand our body alignment and getting right on the basics of flow and breathing technique in yoga. Just a lovely stay and I would definitely recommend this place to my friends or even return here myself to attend the group yoga retreat!" Website, edited

"Naya Bbud is a place you would only think exists in a fantasy land. Maybe I was away with the fairies in my mind and spirit, I felt grounded and very much at home staying at Naya. Yes, like previous people have mentioned, the scenery and the retreat is 10/10. The food and service is comforting and really friendly. I'll be sure to return back to Naya as I can now say they are my friends and family. Yoga with Sandy is an experience. I now can take with me to further my yoga practice. She asked what I wanted to achieve and day-to-day she would cater to where or what I would like to work on. Her practice has inspired me mentally to understand my mind and body. Thank you, Sandy, for being a great yoga teacher. The time of my stay I encountered a gift I couldn't even imagine asking from the universe, Ambe Rays Divine Core Emergence. The three days of healing, guiding, and the pure essence of the course itself was something I cannot put into words. Please look into her courses on the internet and experience something you'll have for life. Thank you, Naya, for being my first ever place I've stayed in Bali. It was a treat and I'm truly blessed with the experience you have made effort to provide for your guests.Thank you!" website, edited

"I love the villa so much. The calmness that i had is indescribable. Perfect for a honeymoon and didn't cost you a lot. However, if you bring children, and luggage, it is not very suitable as you have to ride a motorcycle from the main road (which the management office are located) to the villa. And the road is so small across the paddy field. Backpack is the perfect way to bring your stuff here. But still, it is a very lovely villa and lovely place. I miss Pondok Naya already."

"I stayed here for an amazing New Years Retreat. The staff are amazing especially the beautiful ladies in the kitchen always willing to help you in any way. Food was beautiful. The room i stayed in was Rainbow 1 and it was so nice to be tucked away in the rice fields. The location of this place is even better. It is far enough away from the busy streets of Ubud but still close. Its private and peaceful and such a beautiful place to take the time out to just stop and breathe. The Yoga chalet is so gorgeous."

"To be honest, this is a good villa. Hidden among Ubud's rice field, this villa offers a peaceful stay. The villa itself was better from their photos. "

"Pro: A villa with private pool and a great view. Hidden gem in Ubud."

    "Very peacefull"

    "Semi outdoor bathroom was beautiful."

    "Pool was clean"

    "Garden was green and relaxing"

    "Property was nice"

    "Price really worth it"

"Hard to reach, u need to go by a motorcycle to reach the villa from the main road. Imagine if you bring your baby (mine was 6 mos old at that time) and it was raining."

"No restaurant nearby, you need to go to the main road."

"No phone inside the villa although they lend you a cellphone"

"Cant bring a big luggage, unless you want to walk like 2km"

"To be honest this is a good villa, just dont bring your kids!!"

"I did a private yoga retreat at Naya in July. It was a great experience and a good value. The staff was extremely helpful and the yoga instructor, Sandy, was terrific. I would recommend Naya to anyone looking for a group or private yoga retreat in Bali. While I was there, I also got a tour of the hydroponic garden that the owners son was in the process of constructing. This tour was not part of the package, but he was more than happy to give it anyway, which I appreciated since it was very informative. One thing you may not notice if you visit is that almost all of the trees and plants on the property are something interesting, whether they be passion fruit vines, mango trees, or vanilla plants. The only negative thing I have to say about Naya is that there juices, which are included with yoga retreat, were not good at all. They lacked flavor and were not even prepared consistently when I ordered the same on multiple times. I did mention this while I was there so maybe the juice problem has already been resolved."

"The most beautiful vistas (rice paddies everywhere!), the loveliest rooms (rustic luxury; my favorite), the yummiest food (ask for the Balinese pancake, and prepare to fall in love), and the best mattress-sized porch swing! I stayed there on vacation, but I know they also offer group retreats, and their facilities for yoga and therapeutic practice are wonderful. Highly recommended."

"Naya Ubud is so wonderful, because it is right outside the busy hustle of Ubud town. No cars and noise except for the birds, crickets. and sounds of the water of the river when you go to sleep. I loved to experience the more "local" life around Naya; walking through the rice fields, watching parades of the locals, going to a ceremony in authentic wear. The Balinese staff at Hotel Naya is super friendly and helpful with whatever you need. They give you the exact good price for a cab for instance and the cuisine is just outstanding!"

"I loved this place. Small and personable. I was there for a three days and 2 nights yoga/culture retreat. Everybody was very helpful and nice; especially Sandy and Jai! They get out of their way to help you. I had a great stay. I would love to go back and stay longer. It is located 15 minutes outside of Ubud city center, which is not a bad thing since it is much peaceful here, they offer unlimited taxi service to the city though. Yoga classes by Sandy were great and massages by Poni were awesome! I was very touched to see the birthday wish on the floor when I returned to my room. Very sweet! It may be expensive (saw the comments by other reviewers), but it is worth every penny."

"At Naya Ubud, Rebecca has created a unique environment to embrace the sacred within and without and experience deep soul connection. Away from the busyness of Ubud, Naya is a tranquil oasis of calm surrounded by lush vegetation, tropical flowers, and fruit and general gorgeousness. Rebecca has enhanced this incredible setting with her own style of beautification and there are statues and goddesses, water features, swing seats, and little secret hiding holes to be discovered everywhere you look. The yoga shala is beautifully placed to watch kingfishers and butterflies as you practice or you can swim in the pool with birds of paradise flowers trailing in the water. We fell asleep each night to a chorus of crickets and frogs in the rice fields and woke to a sunrise of birdsong. Naya staff were wonderful - the massages were really special, and the smoothies and juices and food was stunning - unfortunately everywhere else we ate after this was a disappointment - I think we were spoiled! I cannot recommend Naya highly enough - whether for a structured experience (we were there for Anodea Judith's 'immmersion') or just to relax and reconnect, this place really is heaven on earth - thanks Rebecca."

"My husband and I stayed at the Naya for one week as part of a psychology and the chakras immersion conducted by Anodea Judith and organized by Brad Korpalski and Sasha Lang at Pure Immersions. It was the perfect location for the subject matter and you could tell that Rebecca, the owner, envisioned the Naya as a healing sanctuary for any weary visitor seeking rejuvenation and reflection. We had our yoga and teaching sessions right by the river and there was a stone steam grotto right beside it. The staff at the Naya, including Rebecca's son, Nathan, were all wonderful. Everything from the giant day bed swing in the foyer to the absolutely delicious healthy food to Rebecca's cute dog, Benji, made the Naya our home away from home. We also loved that there was no use of disposable plastic bottles. Free Wi-Fi is available in the foyer, but not so much in the rooms, which works out just fine because you'll want to disconnect from the outside world to get the most out of your experience in your rooms. We couldn't have imagined staying anywhere else for this retreat. Thank you Rebecca and the Naya team!"

There is beauty and personal touch in everything Rebecca (owner) has created this heavenly sanctuary for an amazing Bali experience. She shares her wisdom and experience through any event she brings and especially through teaching Kundalini yoga. A must: Rebecca's Kundalini class and Sandy's wonderful daily yoga classes in the fabulous outdoor yoga shala. Poni's relaxing spa treatments. Delicious meals - which they prepared vegan, per my special request. Leaving is the biggest challenge. I left knowing that I will return!"

"Tucked away in the paddy fields, Naya resort was an escape into a nurturing space. The rooms are organically and beautifully designed, the staff always has a smile on their face, and I felt just at home. Communal breakfast table to meet other guest, catch up on emails, read a book, or veg out on the yummy pandan pancakes! The yoga shala is also such a beautiful venue. It was great having workshops being run at the resort, I could join in if I wanted. Thank you Rebecca and Sophie, and all the staff at Naya for giving me a well needed holiday! "My wife and I stayed at Naya Ubud back in April and had an absolutely wonderful stay. We have stayed in Ubud before at some of the higher end resorts, but after our stay at Naya, I don't think we need to look for another place! What I really enjoy about Naya is the fact that it is a homestay type villa with an excellent staff and magnetic owner. The place seemed to attract the most fascinating people from all walks of life and this made our experience so much richer. The food exceeded our expectations, which was a major plus since we've had some bad luck in the past. The property's location was perfectly situated minutes from the downtown area but just far enough off the road that you only heard the peaceful sounds of nature. The rice paddies around Naya seemingly stretch for miles. Incredible sunsets and sunrises, a true Ubud experience! "
