Expert tip: This is one of the most popular yoga retreats offered in Serbia.
This retreat is a combination of wild nature and the welcoming atmosphere of Serbian villages. You will spend a week in a small mountain village of Sopotnica, dedicating time to yoga and meditation, marveling at the green surroundings, strolling through orchards, hiking the mountain trails. It is a chance to experience genuine village life at its best while enjoying the silence of the mountains interrupted only by the sounds of the cow herds and the waterfalls.
You will stay in a mountain lodge located only 700 meters away from the biggest of the seven waterfalls and overlooking the valley below. The lodge has five dormitory rooms, two bathrooms with hot showers, a fully equipped kitchen, and a dining room with a fireplace.
There is a beautiful outside area with wooden tables and benches under big pine trees, with barbecue and firewood oven. A small organic apple and plum orchard is just behind the house, offering juicy fruits and the best sunset spot. The maximum number of people who will stay together in a room is three. All guests will be sleeping in four or five-bed dormitory rooms and will have access to two shared bathrooms. There is no possibility of booking a private room.
Mornings are reserved for the practice, which will usually take around two hours. You will have an early start and after the class, you will have a freshly prepared buffet-style brunch. In the afternoons, you will go explore the surroundings of the village, climb a few peaks, and enjoy the view over the valley.
You will also go hiking with your host, an experienced mountaineer who knows all the local paths and secret spots. The highlight of the surroundings is the magnificent river, rushing down from the mountain in cascades, forming seven waterfalls along the way.
Depending on the interests of the group, there can be a visit to a medieval monastery holding some impressive examples of 13th-century fresco paintings and a very interesting treasury collection. In the late afternoon, you will have a shorter class (60 to 90 minutes) before a delicious buffet-style dinner, which will be served around 19:00.
You will practice yoga and meditation two times a day on a meadow just in front of the biggest of the seven waterfalls, with the stunning view of the valley below. It is a truly meditative experience to practice with the sound of the waterfall. In the unlikely case of rainy weather, it is possible to arrange the space to practice inside.
Marija teaches gentle Hatha yoga, with a lot of emphasis on body awareness and mindful movement, as well as on the proper alignment, breath and focus. Apart from asana (posture), the group will practice pranayama (breathing techniques), as well as meditation in each class.
Her classes are focused on body-mind explorations, on understanding and appreciating the body and finding ways to implement our practice into our lives off the mat, rather than accomplishing certain yoga poses.
The retreat is suitable for all levels. Beginners will have the chance to get the taste of yoga and build a strong foundation for their yogic journey. More experienced yogis will deepen their understanding and get some inspiration to further develop their practice.
This is a half-day trip to a nearby town for a relaxing afternoon spent in a café, strolling by the river, and exploring the history and culture of a multiethnic town of Prijepolje. After the visit to the town, you will continue to the 13th-century Orthodox monastery Mileševa, one of the most important Serbian medieval foundations. The highlights of the monastery are original 13th-century frescoes and a monastic treasury.
Marija teaches Hatha yoga, infused with some elements of Vinyasa Flow and free movement exploration, with an emphasis on proper alignment, breathing, and focus. Her aim is to help students get a better understanding of their bodies and movements so that they can work together on developing their safe and sustainable personal practice. Meditation is an essential part of her classes. For her, to touch the essence of asana practice is to move mindfully, to develop body awareness and learn how to listen to our bodies with kindness and understanding.
This yoga and meditation retreat will take place in a small mountain village of Sopotnica, in Serbia.
