You will be staying in Residence Essaouira Lodge. The main villa features a large indoor dining area, communal seating lounge and many spaces to sit, read, relax, and enjoy the Moroccan sun. The main villas house four large, beautifully decorated bedroom suites with a lounge and kitchen. Each villa has its own private gardens and swimming pool. The outdoor vista includes a refreshing swimming pool with lounging spaces for sun bathing. During the warm evenings you will share dinner under the stars. A peaceful heaven welcomes you in the wonderland of the Moroccan countryside. The view of surrounding gardens, pine forests, and olive trees, is a perfect setting to start off your day of yoga and well-being.

The hotel's gardens and terraces are traditionally built and furnished in the local style but to a high specification. With a mix of traditional features and contemporary design, rooms are tastefully furnished throughout with all that you could need to be comfortable, unpack, and make yourself at home. The rooms come complete with 100% cotton sheets and mosquito netting as well as 100% cotton towels, and pool towels. The accommodation is based on single occupancy; solo travelers will be accommodated in a double room with their own bathroom.

If group sizes reach four persons, then the group will have their own swimming pool. The location for your Moroccan culinary and yoga holidays is in the hillside of Essaouira, 15 minutes from the medina (market area). There are several shuttle buses running each day in to Essaouiras medina if you want a little more hustle and bustle. The outdoor Berber-style yoga tent is the perfect place for sunrise meditation and yoga.

One of the most enchanting and relaxed towns in Morocco is Essaouira: a vibrant coastal town, with a UNESCO world heritage site, rich in history and culture. The mix of whitewashed fishing ports, bright North African technicolor, and picture-postcard ramparts, have been the inspiration for artists all over the world. The surrounding area of Essaouira is an unspoiled community that will delight your senses. Its famous port area is an attraction to both tourists and local shoppers. The medina (market area) will have you feeling as if you have been transported to another time. Everything is waiting for you: hand crafted rugs, Moroccan lighting, jewelry, leather goods, furniture, food, or local artisan goods.

Cleanse and detoxify

Submerge yourself in a peaceful detoxifying environment and indulge in Hammams, healthy eating, and daily yoga sessions. Each day you can enjoy inspirational, delicious, and extremely healthy food, from the abundance of locally produced fruit and vegetables of which Morocco is famous for. Gommage body scrub facilities are available. Exfoliation is only now being discovered to have great benefits for the body.

Cooking classes

During your yoga and detox retreat, you will get the chance to learn how to make your own healthy Moroccan dishes, by taking part in cooking workshops. Naima, your cook instructor, will personally introduce you to methods on how to create delicious versions of dishes that may sound familiar but have never tasted so good, such as prawn and parsley soup, couscous salad, and lentil dal. You will receive your own recipes to take home.

Deepened yoga practice

You will be led through two daily yoga classes by one resident yoga teacher, including meditation sessions and breathing techniques. The morning yoga asana and pranayama (yogic breathing) classes, will be catered to your specific body needs and will range from Hatha to Ashtanga; that will surely awaken and energize you. Whether you are new to yoga, experienced yoga practitioner, or deepening your existing practice, you will learn to move with a stronger awareness of your mind, body and spirit connection, as well as strength and balance.

Seasonal information

The weather is always perfect somewhere at all times of year. Moroccos weather changes very quickly once you head inland or away from the Atlas. You can expect soaring summer temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius during the summer (sometimes even more in the desert regions), but much less once on the coast and near the Atlas mountains, where its usually no more 25 degrees Celsius. Essaouira has a temperate climate, all year round with temperatures between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius.

Moroccos winter climate ensures that from November to March, locations close to the High Atlas, such as the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge, will feel much cooler. All hotels have air conditioning units to heat rooms at this time of year. Away from the Atlas, you can expect winter temperatures of around 20 degrees Celsius. A rainy season does not really exist in the middle to southern parts of Morocco, but November to March receives more rainfall than other months, mostly falling in the evening and clearing for the day.

Dressing information

It is recommended to get clothes that you can stretch and breathe in, but do not over-pack. For the cooler months (April, May and October), bring layers of clothing and a warm jumper, as it will get cooler in the evenings and mornings.

What to bring

Bring your favorite yoga mat (the organizer may also provide one), prescription and other medications (there is a pharmacy in Essaouira). Bring a bathing costume, sunglasses and sunscreen, as well as comfortable footwear for gardens and lounging around. The lighting in the rooms is quite dim, so you might need a book or a headlight to read at night in your bed.

Jo has been teaching yoga for over 15 years and practicing it for over 30. She trained with the British Wheel of Yoga and teaches pregnancy yoga and meditation as well. She spent 3 months in India studying at the Krishnamacharya Healing Yoga Foundation. Her main specialisms are asana and pranayama.

Maria Fonseca

Maria has been based in Essaouira for 5 years, teaching yoga. In a structured day by day program, she will show you how to energize and balance your body and mind, combining a mixture of Hatha and Ashtanga yoga. Her holistic concept of a healthy lifestyle is based on yoga in all its aspects; including yoga postures, breathing exercises, and meditation. (Qualification: Yoga Teacher for Hatha Yoga - Ashtanga Yoga).


Naima will be your cooking tutor. She grew up in Essaouira and has an extensive knowledge of local Moroccan cuisine, as well as of traditional methods of cooking delicious authentic dishes using local spices and ingredients. She is extremely friendly and kind, and will go out of her way to ensure you have a great time exploring the local markets with her, before cooking up a storm in the kitchen.

There were wonderful photographic opportunities to capture both images of the amazing landscapes and also of the local people who Darren knew. Darren was always there to offer essential photographic advice.     "We travelled with Hafid our driver from Essaouira on an 8-day tour with our itinerary arranged by Darren. We wanted to see the Cascades, Todra Gorge, and the Dades Valley but we experienced so much more; staying in an oasis village wed never heard of in an old Ksar and visiting a nomad family and a cobbler! The route meant we didn't spend too many hours on the road each day something we were aware of before booking and part of our decision to book with Wheels Across Morocco. Hafid is very patient. Both my wife and I were impressed with his driving skills and each night we arrived he helped with our luggage if the hotel staff were busy. In all the hotels were very good. Bagdad Cafe in Ait Benhaddou was my favorite. Very lovely hosts. Seeing the views of the High Atlas were also breathtaking. I cant recommend the tour enough. Well be back to cover another part of Morocco."

    "Darren and his Moroccan team deliver a very professional, well organized yet exciting tour; taking care of all of us well before we arrived and without them this experience wouldn't have been the same. For each day, different sights and activities were proposed, and depending on the weather conditions or our groups interests alternative plans were available in a very easygoing way.We had the privilege to visit wonderful cities, like Ait Ben Haddou (where few movies were partially recorded in, like Gladiator), amazing landscapes (including the Atlas mountains, the dunes, oasis, etc) and the unique possibility to get to know the generous, genuine and happy Moroccan people; visiting their houses, markets, etc., learning about their culture and enjoying wonderful stories while drinking tea.We even had a chance to share some hours with a Nomad family in a very remote location in the Atlas, as well as to enjoy a camel trip to a Berber camp in the dunes where we spent the night. The hotels were picturesque, clean and with a good service. We always had good local food, and the van trips didn't feel very long."
