Monte Velho Retreat Centre is located at west Algarve, Portugal. It was once a rural tourism center, Monte Velho has grown into its true essence and purpose as a retreat center. It is a space to appreciate and bring to life the natural beauty of the environment and a chance to have a real and empowering experience, our connection to our roots and a way to discover our true nature. It is a region enriched by the strength of its nature, where the high cliffs overlook the ocean, filling the air with a fresh breeze, spreading myths and tales of fishermen, sailors and pirates, sunken ships and great fisheries. The dense energy that originates from the storms in the ocean, concentrates in the beautiful waves that break on the sweeping sandy coast. Additionally there is a vast and unexplored area where several species can be seen. The location is a bearer of magical aromas, different plants, many of which are therapeutic.
Also Algarve, is Portugal’s southernmost region, which is known for its sunny Mediterranean climate and its beach and golf resorts. The whitewashed fishing villages on low cliffs overlooking sandy coves were transformed in the 1960s tourism boom, and nowadays its central coast between Lagos and Faro is lined with villas, hotels, bars and restaurants.

"Loved the place. You feel so welcomed, everything emanates peace and tranquility. The rooms are very nice and comfortable. There's nothing but silence at night, and a starry sky. There are good walks in the property, nice lakes, where you can swim or ride the little boat. There's permaculture, and beautiful horses and the chance to try "Holistic Riding", with the wonderful, wise Andreas. For a different getaway, I recommend it. If you like nature in its raw form, this is the place for you, near beautiful beaches and surrounded by nature almost untouched by man. Good for surfers. Wonderful healthy breakfast."

It has all the facilities you need; very clean and also fantastic for kids to learn to love animals and nature!!! No internet in the room, it was just what I needed. If I go back to Portugal, this is where I will stay!!!"

"Some of the best times of my life have been spent with dear friends at this resort. An easy drive in your rental car from either Lisbon or Faro airport, it is a surfer's paradise and a rustic nature resort. Friendly, private, sublime and remote are some adjectives I find to describe it. Food lovers will love the local fare, and hikers/walkers will love the beaches, dunes and cliffs of the surrounding areas. This is a place to get in touch with one's soul and disconnect and also recharge. It is wonderful for families."

"Monte Velho was a five star experience for us, and a real find. If the phrase “getting there by dirt roads” puts you off, you will probably want to consider another place. The resort grounds are located hillside with grand vistas of the Atlantic and nothing but pine nut orchards between you and the closest village, Carrapatiera. It is an absolute beauty of a location, and the buildings - the horse stables, the retreat center, the guest houses, the kitchen gardens, all – are laid out with an excellent, artistic eye. Not your place, though, if you are expecting a swimming pool, or even a TV. The rooms, though ‘primitive’ in some sense, are – as the grounds are - decorated with an exceptional sense of style and cosmopolitan set of expectations. This could be driven by the clientele for the yoga retreat center there, or possibly by the owners, but we couldn’t be sure. We love this corner of Portugal anyways; the local seafood, the Portuguese themselves, the surfers, but most of all the national seashore there. The sea and cliffs there are just world class. And the Monte Velho perfectly reflects this spirit. Best I can describe it is a Santa Fe sense of class and style, combined with a local laid back, salt-of-the-earth sensibility. Good mix, obviously, for us. Henrique, our host, was a great guy and got us plugged into the right restaurants in Carrapatiera and the best places to explore along the coast. He also talked us into eating Perceves, to which we are eternally grateful. Our bet is that Henrique is the architect behind this charming retreat. But we never met Vera, so we will have to reserve our praise for our second visit. Oh yes, we are going back."
