Indulge your senses and nourish your spirit in beautiful surroundings.
Gourmet Yoga celebrates wonderful yoga and indulgent food. We create experiences in beautiful locations throughout the world.
The birthplace of Gourmet Yoga lies in a quaint little village in the south of France called Ambeyrac. We've hosted Gourmet Yoga retreats here since 2017.
Ambeyrac is in the Occitane region of France, about two hours north of Toulouse, nestled in the verdant Lot River Valley where our friends Marion and Martin live in their beautiful home, Monplaisir.
La Grange is a beautifully converted stone barn that sleeps up to eight. La Grange stands across the courtyard from the main house and is set in an extensive garden surrounded by trees. It’s the perfect spot for complete relaxation. This place also has a terrace view portrait. The private 40-square-meter pool has lovely views of the garden and surrounding area as does the large sunny terrace which provides a beautiful setting for dining.
Guests also have access to the large brick barbecue with a cool and shady dining area or can choose to relax on the secluded patio tucked away behind the gîte on the site of the traditional bread oven. The ground floor is open plan with high ceilings and lots of light. On the upstairs, the mezzanine provides a cozy second sitting area with a TV and DVD player for watching films or TV and listening to music.
The kitchen is well-equipped (including a dishwasher) and there’s a separate utility room with a washing machine and drying space. The bedrooms have all been newly decorated. There’s one double and one twin room on the ground floor and two twin rooms upstairs. Egyptian cotton linen and fluffy towels are provided as are towels for swimming.
Each floor has a bathroom with a shower and there’s an additional toilet upstairs. The amenities include one double, three twin bedrooms, two bathrooms with showers, additional separate toilet, private pool, Wi-Fi, washing machine, dishwasher, linen, and towels supplied (including pool towels), parking, large garden with swings, and barbecue with shady dining area.
This twin room in the main house has its own private en suite bathroom with shower. Beautifully decorated with antique furniture. Open the blue shutters and watch the swallows fly past the window as you take in the garden and the woods beyond. Egyptian cotton linen and fluffy towels are provided as are towels for swimming.
This twin room in the main house has its own private en suite bathroom with shower. Recently renovated, enjoy stepping out the grand front doors of the house onto your own private terrace to take your morning cup of tea and watch the birds and butterflies in the verdant garden. Egyptian cotton linen and fluffy towels are provided as are towels for swimming.
We will meet you at the train station or the airport and drive you to Ambeyrac in plenty of time to settle in and have lunch. In the afternoon, you may simply relax or enjoy one of the many local walks in the stunning countryside before the first late afternoon yoga session by the pool. The day will be rounded off with a three-course dinner served on the terrace.
After a slow flow morning yoga session which will be held from 08:00 to 09:30, you’ll head off to the Sunday morning market followed by lunch on the terrace. After lunch spend time reading in the garden, or walking to the local Lot river for a swim. A session focusing on meditation and Restorative yoga at 17:00 will be followed by a light supper.
After the morning’s yoga session, you can choose to relax by the pool or in the garden or enjoy a bike ride or walk in the beautiful valley of Lot River. After lunch on the terrace, there’s an optional excursion to Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, one of France’s most beautiful medieval villages perched high above the river. Your afternoon Restorative yoga and meditation session can be followed by an aperitif in the pretty local town of Cajarc (at your own expense) before returning for a gourmet three-course dinner.
You will begin with your regular morning yoga session and breakfast. After which, there is an optional excursion to the stunningly preserved cathedral town of Conques, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an important staging point on the pilgrims’ route to Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain. After lunch, you’ll return in time for your relaxing afternoon yoga session and dinner on the terrace.
After your morning yoga session, you will have the morning free to cycle, walk or read by the pool. Lunch will be on the terrace overlooking the garden and in the afternoon you have more time to journal, nap, meditate or swim. Our last evening meal will be a special celebration and will include another sumptuous feast by our chefs Marion and Eddie.
You will spend the morning relaxing after your final yoga session and breakfast. We send you to Brive-Souillac Airport (BVE), Toulouse (TLS) or the local train station.
I invite you to find the still point, move mindfully and reconnect with your spirit. My classes are influenced by my training in the Anusara style of yoga, an interest in the chakras, my meditation practice and love of poetry. Each class has moments of stillness and meditation. Yoga has taught me to do many things, most importantly to breathe and be patient, to respond to the world with a lightness where possible, and to react to difficulties with grace and openness. Yoga has taught me to see the good in others, to be open hearted to strangers, and to smile at the world.
Marion is half French and she has a deep love for life & food. She is a trained chef and lived and worked in London until she relocated to the beautiful south of France. Marion blames her French grandmother for her obsession with food and her compulsion to feed people (her friends don’t complain!) She loves growing and eating veg and has a passion for baking.
Eddie gained his love of cooking from his mother and grandfather when growing up in Australia. He is inspired by his love of travel and other cultures and has picked up recipes and ideas from the time he spent living in Australia, Brazil, Portugal, and now England. Eddie loves cooks with fresh, local ingredients and uses his creativity and to create new and interesting dishes. He is also a keen photographer and regularly practices yoga and meditation.
Gourmet Yoga will take place at Monplaisir in Le Bourg, Ambeyrac, France. This is one of the most scenic areas of France. High limestone plateaus (the ‘Causses’) are intersected by the Lot River and the Célé River, resulting in varied landscapes with dramatic gorges and beautiful views. It is no wonder that there are walking paths signposted from every village as well as several long-distance hiking paths (GR routes) in the area including the famous pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostella which passes nearby.
You may look out for the picturesque “cazelles”, stone shelters used by shepherds dotted along the paths. Mountain bikers come from all over France to enjoy the off-road tracks but road cyclists are also a common sight on the stunning scenic routes along the river valleys or up in the ‘Causses’. This area is a gastronomic paradise renowned for famous specialties such as Roquefort and Rocamadour cheeses, and ‘fouace’, a delicious sweet bread. You can find a market bursting with fresh local produce almost any day of the week including the fabulous market at nearby Villefranche-de-Rouergue on a Thursday morning.
The towns and villages are evidence of the area’s rich medieval heritage with many delightful “bastide” or fortified villages to discover and enjoy perched amongst the hills. There are no less than 29 of the officially recognized ‘most beautiful villages in France’ in this region - Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, Najac, and Belcastel for example - and many of them are less than an hour away. A well-worth visit is Conquer, World Heritage Site, and a marvel of preserved medieval architecture and beautiful artifacts. Moreover, in sixty kilometers away along the beautiful Lot Valley, there is Cahors, a center of wine production and historic cathedral city.
The nourishing and indulgent offerings of the Gourmet Yoga holiday will be lovingly prepared by trained chef Marion and inspired foodie, Ede, using fresh local ingredients including fruit and vegetables from the kitchen garden. Ede and Marion have always loved cooking together, and our Gourmet Yoga retreats at Monplaisir have always been indulgent and nourishing, full of fresh, seasonal dishes.
Cooking is about the enjoyment of preparing and sharing food - not Michelin stars. The chefs love dishes that maximize the flavor and character of local cheeses, and other specialties using really fresh vegetables and herbs from the local market and Marion's garden.
This area is renowned for its food. You may try Roquefort Galettes, Char-grilled Asparagus with Hollandaise, or a luscious Agen Prune, Chocolate, and Brandy Cake. All the food is lovingly prepared by Marion and Eddie. All the ingredients are locally sourced and grown. You may enjoy lunch at L’Auberge de la Grange du Cros, a renowned local restaurant in a lovely old stone barn and aperitif in the pretty local town of Cajarc. Lunch and drinks at local restaurants are not included in the price.
The friendly staff at Chez Valdine provide a warm welcome for children and adults alike. They organize pony and horse ride from one and half hours to full-day excursions including a picnic lunch and a dip in the river. They’re well-used to complete beginners and made the rather nervous daughter feel comfortable very quickly. The stable is on a farm and the little ones will also love all the farm animals.
For a more leisurely experience, you may enjoy the scenery from the water, kayaking along the Lot and the Célé Rivers. The favorite spot is the beautiful village of Marcilhac-sur-Célé where the friendly staff at Passion Aventure will organize anything between a one-hour and half to a three day trip in a canoe or kayak. Please be sure to book a table for lunch at the Restaurant des Touristes where Mme Logé has been producing fantastic local food from her kitchen for years while her daughter looks after you at the tables set up on the shady terrace.
