Accommodation for our retreats is provided in our standalone Gite or in the main house where the Yoga Studio is located. The Gite can accommodate up to 4 people but in practice 2 is the more regular number - there is a double bed in one bedroom and two single beds in the other. A single shower-room and toilet is shared between occupants of the Gite. In the main house we have two double bedrooms, neither of which are en-suite, sorry! The house has both a shower-room and bathroom.

This yoga retreat is designed to help you make the most of your precious free time. The retreats here in rural France run from late Thursday afternoon until Sunday lunchtime. Restricted to a maximum of four participants, the retreat offers those who value personal attention and wish to improve their yoga practice the perfect opportunity. The small groups also suit those who may be concerned about their ability relative to other participants. During this retreat you will discover the key elements of Hatha yoga with elements of Iyengar yoga, enriched by meditation and relaxation, adapted to all levels.

Josie Bounds

Josie Bounds is a yogini, yoga teacher and artist who lives in France. Her yoga journey began in her 20s. She was starving in her 20s, hungry in her 30s and overindulged in her 40s. Now in her 50s she has the balance to walk a more content path. She has more presence and awareness in her life, conscientiously connecting to what matters most.

Happily, now Josie is comfortable at embedding attitudes and practice in her life in order for her to fulfill her most genuine desire of happiness. This is something Josie would like to pass on and share with others. She lives her life by the tenets and moral code of Buddhism and yoga. Kindness, consideration, and respect have been a lifelong mantra.

After completing a yoga teacher training foundation course, Josie has been teaching regular yoga classes here at La Menantelliere. The yoga studio is her sanctuary, where small classes have flourished.

Josie's yogic journey has taken her to India continuing her studies with Heather Elton, Yoga Teacher Training - 200 RYS Yoga Alliance Accreditation, which has inspired Josie's drive to be an excellent teacher sharing the true nature and essence of yoga with all her students old and new.

The retreats Josie offers are intended for all levels of practitioners alike to spend more time exploring key elements of their yoga practice, based on Hatha and Iyengar yoga, and enriched with meditation and relaxation.

Situated in the Deux Sevres department, France's best kept secret, La Menantelierre offers the perfect antidote to the stresses of modern living. Here you will be able to take a step away from your normal routine and responsibilities and allow yourself the opportunity to feel nurtured and pampered. La Menantelierre is a lovely family home situated on the Deux Sevres, Vendee border between Poitier and La Rochelle, it has a large private garden covering one acre. Recently renovated, the barn has spacious rooms that can be kept cool in summer or can be kept warm with the log fire in winter. Outside there is a large decked terrace with table and chairs overlooking the gardens and the spectacular views of the countryside. Arrival by airplane

You have to book flights to Airport La Rochelle-le de R Airport (LRH) and PoitiersBiard Airport (PIS).

Arrival by ferry

If you are coming from UK you can take the ferry and arrive at Calais or Saint Malo. From here, you will have to drive to the location.

Arrival by train

Please note that some services will go via Paris and the walk from the Metro to the SNCF station at Gare Montparnasse is at least 15 minutes. When you arrive at Montparnasse, there are two sets of stairs or escalators to negotiate before you are at the platforms where trains to Poitiers depart.

When booking tickets, Rail Europe will allow at last an hour to make your connection from Gare du Nord to Gare Montparnasse. To save yourself time and trouble you can buy Paris Metro tickets on the Eurostar trains, as queuing for Metro tickets at Gare du Nord can easily add 30 minutes to your transit time.

On arrival at Gare du Nord, you need to head for Metro line 4 - purple in color and take Metro direction Porte D'Orleans (General LeClerc) - the actual journey time between the Metro stations is estimated at 14 minutes.

The ticket machines at Gare Montparnasse can be a bit frustrating, if possible get all your tickets in advance (you can only collect Eurostar tickets from the self service machines at St Pancras station).

The Paris Metro is a pretty user friendly system - their website offers plenty of advice on getting around. Check to see if you can take a train from Lille direct to Poitiers instead of travelling via Paris.

If you are catching a connecting train from Lille be aware that some trains go from Gare Lille Flandres as opposed to Gare Lille Europe which is where Eurostar services arrive. It is a short walk from Lille Europe to Lille Flandres stations.

Don't forget to Validate your tickets when travelling on French railways - look out for the little yellow machines marked Composter vos billets. If you are likely to travel regularly by train in France, SNCF operate a range of discount cards that are worth considering.

Distances

  • Calais - 7 hours drive
  • La Rochelle-le de R Airport (LRH) - 1 hour
  • Poitiers-Biard Airport (PIS) - 1 hour
  • Saint Malo - 4 hours drive

"I attended the 4 day yoga retreat at Mon Petite Cœur in October of 2016. I was there celebrating my 30th birthday, and I cannot say enough great things about the wonderful weekend that I had there with Josie. With my stressful work schedule, it was the perfect weekend to unwind and relax; and in addition, the food was amazing. We had daily walks in the countryside, and multiple yoga and meditation sessions everyday. It was exactly what I had hoped for and more. I would highly recommend attending a yoga retreat at Mon Petite Cœur if you're looking to relax and improve your yoga practice. Josie is a lovely yoga instructor who studied in India for her teacher training. She has a wonderful hands-on approach that helped me to achieve greater results in my own yoga practice."

"I had been looking for a yoga teacher for some time, and Josie was recommended to me by a friend who said ' you'll really get on well with Josie and she's just finished her new yoga studio, ready to start giving lessons'.I started sessions with Josie almost a year ago, and can honestly say that I have found the perfect yoga instructor, for me. She is mindful of each of our needs, wants and capabilities; she gently and seamlessly helps/corrects, when that is needed - and, as a result, we have each really 'blossomed' and progressed, achieving our own level of skill, and surprising me, sometimes, at what I have managed to achieve, through Josie's teaching/demonstrating and encouragement. Through this, I have stretched myself (in several meanings of the word!), and am motivated to continue my yoga development - really looking forward each time to my two sessions per week. Wish it were more!!I must add that we are treated to tea at the end of our sessions (well, Josie calls it tea, but we have sampled many of Neal's Yard herbal and other 'teas') and always leave refreshed, relaxed and energized (at the same time!). I am looking forward to many, many more yoga sessions in the future. Thank you, Josie. Helena."

"We arrived in the dark and awoke the next morning to pull back curtains and wow, what a view ! Fantastic base for exploring local places of interest. Peace and relaxation guaranteed, whilst enjoying a glass of wine on the decking, and having a dip in the pool. Plenty of lovely local restaurants to enjoy. Josie is always there for help and advice. The gite was spotless, everything you need at hand, and English TV. Bikes are also available to enjoy a ride through the lovely countryside. On one such occasion, we came across Caf BonBon in La Chapelle aux Lys, owned by a lovely English couple. Would highly recommend and return. It was beautiful!"

"We loved staying at la Menantelierre. We arrived late in the evening to a lovely home-made lasagne from Josie which was a great welcome. The Welcome basket was great and meant we did not need to shop on the Sunday at all. The Gite was beautifully designed and comfortably furnished. It was modern but also had character as it was a barn conversion. The gite was also well equipped and we did not miss anything from the kitchen at home. Everything was provided from tea bags to toilet rolls and washing powder. The gite was spacious and cool in the hot weather. Our teenage girls loved their bedroom. The views from the decking were amazing and we all enjoyed the pool which meant many days were spent at the gite just relaxing. We could really switch off here and enjoy the countryside especially as four excellent bikes were provided for us which meant no hiring costs. There was Wi-Fi when needed also. We were able to lie outside in the evenings on the sun beds star gazing as there was no light pollution. Josie keeps lovely gardens with chickens, pigs and plenty of lavender. It was not at all intrusive having the owners on site and next time I shall join in one of Josie's yoga classes!Thank you for a truly relaxing holiday with the right amount of peace and quiet but still only just over an hour to the beach at La Rochelle. The town of Niort was interesting to visit and have lunch. This holiday was also exceptionally good value for money we could not fault it! Thanks Josie."

"Many thanks for a lovely week at La Menantelliere. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and all agreed it is the best holiday cottage weve stayed at, at home or in France. We loved the spacious, airy living area and the walk out onto the large deck with lovely views. The pool was a big hit with our daughter, and seeing the pigs and chickens were the highlight of her holiday! The gite was perfectly equipped and as hosts, you were so welcoming."

"Home now from our wonderful week at La Menantelierre. The gite is gorgeous, with absolutely everything we needed for a relaxing stay. Josie is a wonderful host, and the welcome basket on arrival (including wine!) was a lovely touch. The gite has the most fantastic views which no photos can do justice to. Miles and miles of tranquil French countryside was our view whilst sipping wine on the terrace - gorgeous. My husband enjoyed numerous local walks, maps provided by Josie! The local restaurants are superb for 'Plat du Jour' at 12 EUR each. A visit to La Rochelle was lovely, and would recommend as less than an hour away. Thank you so much for a lovely, relaxing stay. We'll definitely be back!"

"Delightful gite with a fabulous view from the living room and terrace that is hard to beat, but we also recommend a walk up the lane for a 180 degree panoramic view of the wonderful countryside around. Thoughtfully and comfortably furnished and has the best equipped kitchen we have found in a holiday home. Josie provides a lovely welcome basket along with all the basics you need for the kitchen and bathroom. All in all a lovely gite in a tranquil location and we would thoroughly recommend it for a relaxing time away from it all."

"We had a lovely holiday and would thoroughly recommend staying here. The gite is beautifully presented, spotlessly clean, and is a real home from home. Josie the owner is very friendly and helpful, she even let our two year old boy help feed the chickens and pigs and pick some fresh raspberries and strawberries. The gite has the most amazing view of the Vendee countryside, and is a great place to relax. We would recommend a trip to Parc Bruin if you have young children, the swimming lake about 15 minutes away (which I cant remember the name of but Josie will point you in the right direction), a walk around and lunch out in Vouvant, a visit to the River Mervent where you can hire boats and a lunch out at the Chateau La Citardiere."

  • Review by Keith & Sharon Millington from Rochdale, UK

"Spent a week here and we really enjoyed the home. It was very comfortable, clean and well equipped and had all the facilities you could want. The owner, Josie was very helpful and made us so welcome. The pictures don't show relay how peaceful and tranquil the home really is and the views are lovely. Sat on the patio with a glass of wine watching the sun go down brings fond memories. The only blot was the weather which could have been better but it did not spoil our week. Thanks Josie. Recommended for pet friendly, sightseeing, families with teenagers, and families with young children."

  • Review by The Gerritsen Family from Holland

"La Menantelierre is a wonderful place to spend your holiday. The gite is perfectly lovely (comfortable and cozy) and it offers beautiful views of the lush green countryside. The owner Josie lives next door in the main house, and she couldn't have been friendlier or more helpful; providing us with fresh produce from her garden, toys for the children, tips for activities any-time we wanted. We loved eating the figs and cherries directly from the trees in the garden, and very gladly helped ourselves to fresh herbs, onions and zucchinis for our supper. Josie, thank you for your very generous hospitality: we had a fantastic holiday!"
