Join this amazing retreat in a stunning remote mountain setting, with daily yoga classes and guided hiking! In January 2018, MoaAlm Mountain Retreat was featured by The Guardian newspaper as one of the best retreats in the world for mind, body, and spirit breaks. In 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 it was awarded “Best of the Best” worldwide by TripAdvisor. Since 2024, MoaAlm has been an “Official Partner of the Hohe Tauern National Park.”
MoaAlm Mountain Retreat has six comfortable single, double, twin, or triple rooms with ensuite bathrooms and stunning views. All are thoughtfully decorated and very spacious, up to 24 square meters. South facing rooms have balconies and views of the surrounding mountains.
All rooms can be made up of one double or two single beds. Two of the rooms can also be made up into triple rooms and are ideal for solo travelers.
Please make yourself at home. After an active day in the outdoors, you can enjoy the astonishing mountain views from the sunny terrace, soak in the wood burning hot tub, relax in the large living room, sip a drink at the bar, curl up on the sofa with a good book, and immerse yourself in the beauty of MoaAlm Mountain Retreat.
On five evenings, you will enjoy a three-course dinner at the communal oak dining table with your fellow guests and MoaAlm hosts.
The in-house yoga studio has a large panoramic window with gorgeous views of the mountains. It is well-equipped with mats and props to support you in your poses. The room is available to MoaAlm's guests at anytime of the day if they want meditate or use the space for self-practice.
Start the day with a morning yoga session with their in-house yoga teacher or maybe join a relaxing afternoon Restorative class. The morning sunrise fills the room with energy and the late afternoon sunset turns the mountains a beautiful shade of pink.
MoaAlm loves this room, and they hope that you'll enjoy it as much as they do.
MoaAlm's boiler system for the central heating is extremely efficient, using only sustainable wooden pellets as fuel and producing very little waste. The thickly insulated walls, newly installed loft, and triple-glazed windows in the house ensure that they don’t even need the radiators on all the time during the winter months to stay warm!
They encourage guests to be conscious about how they use the lighting and heating in their rooms. Turn off lights as well as keep doors and windows closed when heading out for daily adventures.
MoaAlm's hot water is heated primarily by their solar panels. Only when there are a lot of consecutive cloudy or rainy days, do they need to rely on the boiler system as a back-up.
The house is south facing and it is at 1,800m, so they do not only get plenty of sunlight in the summer months, but they're also able to utilize the winter sun (as long as they keep removing the snow from the solar panels!).
There's nothing better than having a relaxing soak in the hot tub, especially as MoaAlm avoids the use of chlorine and other chemicals. They keep it clean through a natural salt cleaning system, using Epsom salts and Dead Sea salt, which are full of magnesium, which is especially beneficial for tired legs after a long day of hiking in the Austrian Alps.
The hot tub is wood fired, and it is only heated by burning sustainable firewood that they source from one of the farmers in the local village.
MoaAlm is lucky that there's a fantastic recycling service provided by their local community. They make the most of this service to reduce the amount of landfill that they produce. They also limit their use of single-use plastics on a day-to-day basis, using glass jars and buying ingredients and natural cleaning products in bulk.
Upstairs in the guest living area, they provide a mini recycling station, and they also have this in every main area of the house to streamline the recycling. They also have a large composting system for food waste, but in general, not much food goes to waste around there…it’s too tasty!
MoaAlm Mountain Retreat is situated within one of the most beautiful and remote areas of East Tirol, Austria. It is the perfect place for adventure and to relax, refresh, and make the most of all that the Alps has to offer.

For those interested in yoga, MoaAlm's certified yoga teacher offers a morning yoga class on five days of the week. Classes generally last one hour and you are very welcome to join whether you have never done yoga before or you are a regular practitioner. Classes will always be tailored to individual needs.

The fully-equipped in-house yoga studio has panoramic mountain views and if weather permits, your yoga practice will be taken outside to breathe in the fresh mountain air. They have yoga mats and props, so as a guest, you will only need to bring some comfortable clothes that will allow you to move freely while stretching.
MoaAlm offers guided or accompanied hikes and walks on five days of your holiday. The hikes can take from four to seven hours, including comfortable breaks. You may conquer up to 1,000 vertical meters or you may not - it’ll be up to you!
If you have a basic fitness level, participate in some cardio or endurance activities, and has no serious knee injuries, then you will be able to join MoaAlm on these hikes. You will start the week with easier hikes to warm-up and build from there.
You will also be welcome to go on self-guided walks. They will supply maps, routes, and local knowledge.
The other perfect summer option is to take extra relaxing days at the base at MoaAlm. With a good book on the sunny south facing terrace with views of the surrounding mountains, you can rejuvenate within the fresh alpine air.
They understand that every guest and every day is different. What sets this holiday apart from the usual mountain holiday is that MoaAlm can find that perfect daily adventure for every member of the group. The benefit of small groups is that they can adapt, discuss, and personalize each day.
Meeting new people and making new friends, whether you are a single traveler, in couple, or part of a group, while being in a remote alpine location, is what they love at MoaAlm. They just want everyone to love the mountains as much as they do!
Practice yoga with a view to remember before breakfast, followed by a guided hike starting from MoaAlm’s back door into the famous Hohe Tauern National Park. The guide would like the chance to share their knowledge of the area and hopefully, you will see marmots, eagles, and vultures.
Return to MoaAlm, where post-activity tea and cake await. You can also have a pre-dinner muscle soak in the hot tub, as the evening light dances on the surrounding peaks. Then, it'll be time for a super tasty and nutritious plant-based three-course evening meal over which you can talk about your day's adventure.
You will arrive at your remote mountain home, enjoy a welcome drink and delicious cake, settle into your room, and take in the stunning mountain view. You will meet other guests over a delicious three-course dinner and chat with your hosts about your weekly activities and preferences.
On the second day, you will enjoy an 08:00 yoga session, looking out at the sunrise from behind the mountains. Breakfast will be followed by an introductory hike in the Kals Valley. You can enjoy a picnic with a view of Austria's highest mountain, Grossglockner, and have plenty of time to relax back at the house and enjoy the wood-fired hot tub.
Over dinner, you can start talking about the best moments of the day with your fellow travelers!
You will enjoy a delicious breakfast followed by a hike from MoaAlm into the famous Dorfer Valley. You may take an ice-cold dip in a stunning glacial lake and a coffee at a traditional mountain hut. Hike back to MoaAlm for a late afternoon Restorative yoga session and an East Tyrolian dinner at a local restaurant.
The morning yoga session will be outside. Maybe you will take the gondola up (price not included) to do some high alpine hiking towards the top of Blauspitz mountain. You can also have a witchcraft soup at a mountain restaurant overlooking the entire valley.
Back at MoaAlm, you will enjoy the late afternoon sun and a drink from the hot tub while the chef prepares a delicious dinner.
After a nutritious breakfast and morning yoga session, do what you wish to! There will be no guided activity scheduled. Some guests might be more in the mood for relaxation, while for others, the MoaAlm team will be happy to organize another adventure.
You can head to the nearby town of Lienz, chill with a book at MoaAlm, spoil yourself with a spa day, go swimming, paragliding, mountain biking, and much more. Everyone will meet up again for dinner at 19:00 in an excellent restaurant in Kals.
Get back to your new routine: morning yoga, breakfast, and hiking! You and the group will walk up to Figerhorn Summit, enjoying an enroute picnic among a lot of marmots. You will come back to MoaAlm to have afternoon drinks and freshly baked cake, then relax before dinner at the house.
After an energizing yoga session, you will enjoy a breathtaking final hike to Glorer Hut. Once again, you will take in the beautiful surroundings with all your senses. At MoaAlm, the hot tub will be ready. Enjoy some sunset drinks and a final evening meal with new friends.

Sophie began practicing yoga 15 years ago. Yoga became then an integral part of her life, to find a better balance. She never found so much strength and inner peace as on her yoga mat and is happy to be able to give this back in her classes. In 2019 she completed her 200-hour yoga teacher training at Spirit Yoga in Berlin and is about to complete her advanced 500-hour training. Her teaching is influenced by Vinyasa Flow, very precise and always connecting power and relaxation.

The growing season is very short up there at MoaAlm as they are at 1800m, but they manage to grow a bountiful garden of fresh herbs, chard, and lettuce. They also have lots of fresh mint in the summer to supplement their tea obsession. They cook with organic and locally-sourced food as much as possible.
Likewise, they try to get all their other supplies from nearby independent businesses in the village of Kals. They are also committed to constantly looking at ways to address their carbon footprint and they are a plant-based business.
MoaAlm has their own water supply that comes to them directly from a natural spring from the mountain side. This means that they don’t have to worry about transporting water up to MoaAlm through a pump system. It tastes incredible as it comes directly from Grossglockner Glacier and is filtered by nature! Their guests often say that it’s the purest water that they have ever tasted.
If you like a little bit extra adventure, MoaAlm Mountain Retreat can organize additional activities such as mountain biking, rafting, paragliding, rafting, or rock climbing.
