In January 2018, MoaAlm Mountain Retreat was featured by The Guardian newspaper as one of the best retreats in the world for mind, body, and spirit breaks. Join us for an extraordinary winter holiday. Whether you would like to be on the ski slopes every day, improve your yoga practice, or try snow shoeing through beautiful forest trails, there is something here for everyone.
The MoaAlm Mountain Retreat has comfortable single, double, twin, or triple rooms all with en-suite bathrooms. The rooms are stylishly decorated and spacious. The sizes vary up to 24 square meters. All rooms have an en-suite private bathroom and stunning views. Some have balconies but not all. All rooms can be made up with one double or two single beds. After an active day in the outdoors, you can enjoy the astonishing view from the sunny terrace or relax in the living room, enjoy a drink at the bar, curl up on the sofa with a magazine or book, or enjoy a meal at the shared dining table. The in-house yoga studio has a panoramic mountain view and is the perfect place for an active start of the day with some energizing yoga or a relaxing session of Restorative yoga in the afternoon. In the morning, the sunrise fills the room with energy and the late afternoon turns the mountains pink.
MoaAlm is situated at 1800m and is the perfect place to relax and get away from it all. This retreat is the perfect holiday for single travellers, families, or groups of friends. There is something to do for everyone. Some like to participate in the morning yoga and spend the day reading or visiting the nearby spa, whilst others go skiing in the resort or join the guided snow shoe hikes. At the end of the day, you will all come together over a delicious plant based meal.
MoaAlm offers a one hour yoga class with a certified instructor on five days of the week. You are very welcome to join whether you have never done yoga before or you are a regular practitioner. The classes are always tailored to individual needs. Your yoga teacher teaches an energising yoga class in the mornings and occasionally teaches a Restorative yoga session in the afternoon.
There is no set daily schedule. MoaAlm Mountain Retreat understands that every guest and every day is different. The benefit of small groups is that you can adapt, discuss, and personalize each day. Some will prefer to ski in the resort most days and take the opportunity to try something new on one day whilst others in the same week will choose the alternative activities on offer daily and choose to not ski the pistes.
It makes the discussion around the dinner table much more interesting as you’ve all had your own days of adventure. However, a typical week might look like this:
Arrival to your mountain home from home, MoaAlm. Welcome drink and a chat over dinner about your weekly activity preferences.
Morning yoga class looking out at the sunrise from behind the mountains before breakfast, followed by a snowshoe hike from MoaAlm to a mountain hut. Time to relax back at the house in the late afternoon before dinner is served.
Today could look like you having breakfast followed by a fresh powder run down to the chair lift of the GG-resort. There could be a day cruising on the pistes or maybe an apres ski drink in the village before being driven back up to MoaAlm for late afternoon cake and a soak in the hot tub.
There could be poor visibility up high so you will head down the valley and take a winter hike trail through the trees. There will be an early evening toboggan followed by a restorative yoga session.
There will be no alternative activity today so you can head to the piste for a day, take the snowshoes out on one of the marked trails or improve your cross country ski technique. Dinner out this evening will be at one of the restaurants in the village.
If you’ve never tried cross-country skiing before, then take the opportunity to join a beginner’s cross country ski group guaranteed to make you laugh out loud! Dinner will be at the house in the evening.
Friday comes around all too quickly but you make the most of it with a stunning snow shoe hike to the base of Austria`s highest mountain, Grossglockner. Final evening meal at the house with new friends!
This will be your departure day.
MoaAlm Mountain Retreat offers daily yoga in a panoramic mountain studio alongside guided outdoor activities on five days of the week. The activities include snow shoeing, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing and snowboarding, winter hiking, and tobogganing. These activities depend on the groups preferences.
Chesca is our resident yoga instructor from England, and has spent the past 2 years teaching in India and London. Before joining the MoaAlm family she taught at the Sivanada Yoga Ashram in the Bahamas as a resident karma yogi. She believes there is no such thing as being 'good' at yoga and can be practiced by everybody. With an element of fun and a focus of being present and in touch with the Self - she encourages her students to take the balance of energy and relaxation found on the mat back out into daily life.
Your home away from home will be MoaAlm Mountain Retreat in Kals am Grossglockner, Austria. The MoaAlm Mountain Retreat has a secluded location at 1800 meters above sea level; just three kilometers above the farming community of Kals am Grossglockner in the middle of Hohe Tauern National Park.
From the house, you can ski down to the ski resort and at the end of the day, MoaAlm will pick the skiers up at the bottom of the ski slopes with the jeep to drive everybody back up to MoaAlm.
Because MoaAlm’s three-kilometer driveway serves as the local tobogganing track in winter, normal cars cannot drive up and down to MoaAlm. If you are traveling by car, you can park your car at the parking lot down at the bottom of the driveway and MoaAlm will pick you up with the jeep.
Being one of the most snow-sure regions of the Alps, Kals is a perfect place to ski and snowboard. The GG-resort offers 40 kilometers of pistes that are suitable for skiers of all ages and with all levels of experience. There are no waiting lines for the lifts and the many restaurants on the slopes serve local specialties.
During this retreat, you will be served seven breakfasts, six dinners, and seven-afternoon teas. At MoaAlm, food is very important, we like to eat a sustainable, whole food plant-based diet. Whenever possible MoaAlm Mountain Retreat sources locally produced and organic ingredients.
During breakfast, you may enjoy a variety of muesli, fresh fruit, fresh bread, sweet spreads such as jams and peanut butter, alongside a range of our homemade fermented goodies, and savory spreads and nut cheeses. MoaAlm Mountain Retreat also includes local meat, cheese, and egg option for those who would prefer that.
Organic coffee and tea is served all day at MoaAlm. You will be welcomed back to MoaAlm every afternoon with freshly baked vegan cake, and a choice of hot or cold drinks. During six evenings, MoaAlm Mountain Retreat will serve a delicious and freshly prepared three-course plant-based dinner, including local wine or beer or organic soft drinks.
