Hide all

Baan Hom Samunphrai accommodations are all in traditional, open-style Thai farmhouses, which have been screened against mosquitoes and other unwelcome tropical visitors. There are overhead fans and a fine spray of water on the roof to keep you cool in the hot seasons. The houses are arranged as in a rural Thai village around a pond with fruit trees and medicinal plants between them.

The grounds offer 4 wooden houses with 10 upstairs bedrooms, all of which have private porches. Each house has its own modern (Western) toilets and showers, some in the rooms and some downstairs, as well as an open social area below with mats, tables, and chairs.

You will stay in a shared room. Extra fees will be applied for private room with shared bathroom and private room with attached bathroom. There is also a communal kitchen for guests, a fleet of bicycles, and Wi-Fi everywhere. In addition to the living spaces, there are five dedicated work spaces available.

Baan Rusi

This is a screened, Lanna-style sala with a Buddha shrine. This is the space where yoga classes will be held.

Sala Samathi

This is an octagonal meditation space designed to be private, quiet, cool, and as free as possible from distractions. It can also be used for yoga or just plain napping. You will use this peaceful space daily for meditation.

Baan Hom

This is in Ayutthaya style. It was built all in teak over a pool of clear water. Baan Hom is used for therapeutic massage.

Two steam baths

There are 2 steam baths with changing rooms and tiled showers. The fresh medicinal herbs are changed daily and then placed in an open basket in the center of each steam room.

There will be one half-day and one full-day group excursions during this retreat. You will learn about Thai culture, visit temples and holy sites, experience being blessed by monks, and devour delicious Northern Thai cuisine.

  • Alex Merkowitsch

As a certified and registered yoga teacher, Alex draws on her training in the Anusara, Yin yoga, yoga therapy, and principle-based partner yoga methods to facilitate a safe opening of body, mind, and heart for any level of students.

The retreat will be held on the peaceful and charming grounds of Baan Hom Samunphrai, a Herbal Health and Training Centre located in the small village of Baa Kluay. Although Baan Hom Samunphrai is only 9 kilometers from the center of Chiang Mai, it still relies upon agriculture for its livelihood.

Rice paddies, longan orchards, vegetable gardens, and fishponds are cultivated all around the property, and herbal medicine is still used widely by the neighbors. The proprietors grow most of the herbs they use, and the fruit served at their tables is from their own nearby trees.
