Join Melissa and Richard as they offer vibrant, mindful flow classes in the morning. Melissa’s offering are both therapeutic and focus on building strength and flexility. Her classes will be a combination of slow, strong flow with modifications for injuries or sensitivity in the body, finishing with long held prop supported postures (restorative yoga). Learn to listen to body through the marriage of breath and movement as we explore moving through postures with grace and strength. These sessions will intertwine mantra, pranayama, mindful Vinyasa flow, and finish with restful postures.

In the evenings, Richard and Melissa will offer a combination of Restorative Yoga with Yoga Nidra and meditation or guided Thai Yoga Massage and partner yoga. A restorative yoga practice is one of receiving rest in order for us to build stores of energy. Experience luxuriously long held postures that are supported by props for your body’s needs and complete the practice with an extended Yoga Nidra which is a meditation that walks you through intention, a body scan, observation of sensations and enables the body to move through the subtly of relaxation in a supportive way.

There are 11 charming guest huts in Ulpotha, 10 of which are for two guests and one for three. All of them are built using traditional wattle and daub with comfortable beds, excellent mosquito nets, cupboards, fresh water, towels and offer a sarong to wear and take home.

The huts are of an open, airy design that facilitates the sense of being one with nature. Twice a year, each hut is hand painted using different coloured clays, where no designs are ever repeated. Much use has been made of clay, stone, wood, pottery and fabrics that reflect traditional village practices and aesthetics.

With one or two exceptions, Ulpotha adheres to the Sri Lankan village tradition of keeping toilet/loo spaces separate from living spaces. The enchanting showers are open to the stars and the toilets are modern. All the huts at Ulpotha are allocated on a twin share basis. Sharing with someone is more welcome than one might usually expect.

Though ultimately soothing to the ears, the jungle noises can take some getting used to and its quite reassuring to have a companion sharing one's space. By design there is no electricity in Ulpotha and life is lived by the rhythm of the day. As candles are to a restaurant, flame is to Ulpotha. Paths and accommodation are lit by lamps and lanterns with the twinkling firelight creating a captivating and romantic sense of times gone by.

Program

Morning sessions

Learning to listen to body through the marriage of breath and movement is the gift of a sustainable yoga practice. Melissa Smith Yoga take an integrated, balanced approach that focuses on pre-hab (preventing injuries and encouraging healthy movement through all stages of life). In the morning session, Melissa may intertwine mantra, pranayama, and strength building postures with slow transitions adaptive your body’s ability. You will finish with a restorative pose and either enjoy the sounds of nature for your savasana or Richard will guide you in segments of yoga Nidra meditation. The class is ideal for all levels of experience.

Evening sessions

The evening sessions may vary and could include some slow yoga and movement, partner yoga, community activity or discussion, or Restorative yoga with Melissa. Yoga Nidra guided meditation with Richard will conclude each evening. As you dive deeper and deeper into the phases of this extraordinary meditation practice.
