The Ostional wildlife refuge in Costa Rica was created in 1984 to protect the nesting site of the Olive Ridley sea turtle. This location is one of the largest mass nesting destinations globally. The week before the new moon, hundreds and sometimes hundreds of thousands of sea turtles come to one specific mile of beach to dig their eggs into the black volcanic sand.
Turtles nest at Ostional year round, but peak months occurs from August through December. The phenomenon of “arribadas” (mass nesting) occurs regularly once or twice a month. If you are lucky, you may have the incredible opportunity to see this biological miracle.
