BJJ, MMA, and Muay Thai

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

BJJ in Thailand

Thailand is known for being the mecca of Muay Thai and stand-up fighting, but its grappling scene has exploded in recent years. None other than world Muay Thai & BJJ champion, black belt and Asia-MMA star Adam Kayoom said that Asia is now stacked with top notch BJJ players and great grappling, and from a man who calls Thailand home, those words carry some weight.

With a slew of black and brown belts converging on Thailand in recent years, and the emergence of several prodigies and a whole host of new grappling tournaments in Bangkok and Thailands neighboring countries such as Indonesia and Hong Kong, Thailands BJJ scene has grown exponentially.

BJJ, defined

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a submission grappling art which uses primarily ground-based techniques to secure chokes and joint-locks on your opponent or attacker. The style was popularized by the success of Royce Gracie in the early UFC events, and ever since 1993, Mixed Martial Artists have studied and trained in BJJ in order to maximize their ability to win.

One oft-repeated mantra regarding BJJ is the ground is the ocean, and the BJJ player is the shark. The point is; fighters not versed in BJJ have very little chance against fighters that train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. That was proven in comprehensive fashion over two decades ago.

Simply put, if you do not train in BJJ, catch-wrestling or some form of submission grappling, you are not a true Mixed Martial Artist and you have a very limited chance of success at just about any level of MMA.

Mixed Martial Arts

The Fastest Growing Sport in the World

Such is the moniker given to MMA or Mixed Martial Arts, the most comprehensive form of professional and sanctioned fight sport existing in the world today. Known as cage fighting by many in the west (due to mainstream media coverage) and most associated with American organization The Ultimate Fighting Championship, more commonly known as UFC - the sport has become a familiar spectacle and has grown rapidly in all corners of the globe.

MMA in Thailand

Thailand, the mecca of Muay Thai and home of stand-up fight sport, is no exception. With Bangkoks DARE, Ko Samuis Friday Night Fight Night (FNFN) and probably many more to come, Thailand saw promotions finally start to host MMA events on its soil in recent years. And in those years, the country saw a great deal more martial artists and aspiring fighters flock to its shores with the intention to become proficient in something other than Muay Thai.

In present day Thailand, skilled Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu players and high caliber wrestlers, pro-MMA fighters and submission grapplers coach thousands of young fighters looking to hone their skills in the grappling aspects of MMA whilst learning the best stand-up martial art in its cultural and spiritual home.

As such, MMA in Thailand is booming, and just as thousands of people continue to flock here to learn the art of Muay Thai from its true masters, a small but growing percentage of them now come here to learn grappling and how to become a skilled and well-rounded Mixed Martial Artist too.

Here at Maximum, we have a dedicated team of qualified Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructors and players, grapplers and of course, experienced Muay Thai veterans coaching the stand-up aspects of MMA.

Muay Thai

Muay Thai in Thailand

Thailand is the mecca of Muay Thai. This country has perhaps the richest history of stand-up martial arts, and its national sport of Muay Thai transcends sport itself; it is an integral part of Thailands culture and heritage.

Phuket and Patong Beach are no different. This island is a hotbed of Muay Thai, and regarding Patong Beach in particular, this coastal resort boasts renowned national champions such as Penek and Penthai, and both the two major Muay Thai stadiums on this island are located in Patong; the stadium bearing the towns name, and also Bangla Boxing Stadium.

These are indisputably two of the most notable Muay Thai arenas outside of Bangkoks two national stadiums, and plenty of Lumpinee and Rajadamnern Stadium fighters, the best in Bangkok compete here as well, as well as international stars and local Phuket fighters of both foreign and Thai persuasion alike.

Muay Thai in Patong Beach

The sport is considered by many to be the most complete and effective stand-up striking martial art system in the world. Known and respected as The Science of Eight Limbs, Muay Thai boxers are taught to attack with fists, legs, knees and elbows, with a wide array of punching, kicking, kneeing and elbow offensive maneuvers.

Defensively, blocks with the shins and elbows led practitioners of other martial arts, after competing against Thai boxers, name them Men of Stone. There is also a real beauty and elegance to Muay Thai that many fail to appreciate until they come to Thailand. The art of eight limbs can be used to devastating effect, but performed properly by professionals and the speed and precision of the techniques is a sight to behold.

Some of the higher scoring attacks such as sweeps and knees to the body can be set up by feints, the effortless flow of the combinations that skilled Thais put together is brilliant, and seeing top level Nak Muays (boxers) such as Saenchai and the like execute these moves in such exquisite fashion really shows what Muay Thai can be, and is, all about.

Elite Nak Muays and the sport and art of Muay Thai executed with elegance and skill really puts the art in martial art. Well-executed Muay Thai can be the most beautiful and fluid martial arts attack you could hope to see, and watching two skilled practitioners competing against each other is a great spectacle. And nowhere on earth is that spectacle superior to Thailand.

Beyond the two national stadiums, you can watch free televised Muay Thai every Sunday on Channel 7; this can often be the high-watermark of the sport, as the Channel7 combatants are generally rising youngsters who are hungry for glory and a shot in the Rajadamnern or Lumpinee Stadiums, and before a nationally televised audience put on great displays of heart and skill.

Muay Thai in our gym

Here at Maximum Gym MMA & Muay Thai training camp, Patong Beach, Phuket, we offer Muay Thai tuition from true fighting veterans of the ring, who were raised into the Muay Thai lifestyle and have lived and breathed the (national) sport all their lives since childhood.

Few sports and martial arts get you in quite as good a physical condition as does a serious approach to Muay Thai; undertaking it in the mecca of Muay Thai itself, here at Maximum Gym under our experienced veteran coaches is a surefire way to whip yourself into tremendous physical condition whilst learning a new skill from men who mastered the craft.

Maximum Fitness & Combat Centre is set against the perfect picturesque backdrop of the Andaman seas crystal blue, right on Patong Beach, built onto the sand! Nothing separates our world class facility from the sea but golden sand. Welcome to Thailand - this is a training holiday!

Thailand is a very humid climate in which to train and sweat on a daily basis. In many gyms there have been breakouts of staph infection, impetigo, ringworm, bacterial infections and rashes of all kinds; this is generally due to sweat collecting and equipment not being clean, not to mention the moist environ that creates mold and fungi and of course, people not showering after training or repeatedly wearing unwashed training gear that retains and spreads bacteria to those they come into contact with.

Here at Maximum Fitness & Combat Centre we take hygiene and the health of our staff and customers extremely seriously. We have a cleaning staff that ensures that the gym equipment, ring canvases, mats, cage area and bags are cleaned every day after each training session. Bleach and water solutions and anti-bacterial solution is used to kill the bacteria and fungi that collects - not to mention to kill the ensuing smell that all that sweat brings with it! A lackadaisical approach to dealing with hygiene issues is costly in Thailand to both the individual and the gym.

With contagious viruses spreading through lack of hygiene due to the climate and the nature of sharing workout areas and/or physical contact with others, it is easy for the individual to miss out on training that has been paid for, not to mention losing vital time out of a holiday, and from the facilitys perspective, breakouts are bad for business and the maintenance of a good reputation is paramount for any serious facility or gym. Maximum Fitness & Combat Centre prides itself on being a world class facility and as such, its standards must be maintained.

We definitely advise that as part of your trip you see other parts of this incredibly diverse, exotic country. Thailand has a rich history, and this ancient South-East Asian country has been involved in its share of hostilities and cultural differences with its neighbors, with Burma to the west and the Khmers (of Cambodia) to the east.

It is of course most famous for Muay Thai; it being the mecca of this ancient martial art that is still the national sport of Thailand and a culturally transcendental aspect of Thai life. From beaches to monuments to temples; gaining an insight into Thai culture and history is a fascinating thing, and when combined with the study of its national sport and martial art, it really helps you gain an appreciation of this people and this ancient country and civilization.

From the beautiful and comparatively cheap - north of the country, to the hustle and bustle of Bangkok, Isaan, which has produced so many magnificent Muay Thai boxers, the Gulf of Thailand islands and their unique individual identities, the Thai towns of the Malay Peninsula, the picturesque and serene Krabi, and tourist favourite Phuket, there is so much diversity in all parts of this country that it would be a shame to not experience more of it.

A trip via boat to the Phi Phi islands off the coast of Phuket only costs 700 THB return, or for a one-day trip that also incorporates stops on other islands, anything between 2000 and 3000 THB can be quoted. The Gulf of Thailand islands such as Ko Samui and Ko Pha Ngan are much smaller than Phuket, and while Samui and Pha Ngan are no different from a tourist perspective, their smaller size and the greater sense of seclusion (with no bridge connecting them to the mainland) one gets more of an island sense.

Ko Pha Ngan entered the popular consciousness with its famous Full Moon parties that see thousands upon thousands of travellers flock to its shores near the start of every month. Those looking for the tranquility that Samui and Pha Ngan now lack for the most part could find themselves on Ko Tao, Ko Chang or Ko Samed, all of which are favourites of the diver crowds and those avoiding the more ostentatious party and tourist vibe that Pha Ngan in particular now covets and attracts.

Bangkok is a vital experience for any visitor to Thailand. To leave the country without experiencing the hustle and bustle of this hot, humid and vibrant city and its mass of humanity would be a disservice to oneself. From the busy central shopping areas of Siam and Silom to Pratanum, to the wildness of Sukhumvit from Sois 4-21 in the Nana/Asok area of Sukhumvit Road, to Patpong, to Rattanakosin island and the Kings Palace at Sanam Luang, to the famous backpackers area of Khao San Road in the northwest, Bangkok truly has something for everyone.

The north of Thailand is cheap and beautiful; a wonderful combination of attributes for every increasing numbers of tourists and travellers who choose Chiang Mai, Pai and other northern settlements as their destination of choice. Pattaya is Patong x5. It is far and away the most infamous tourist trap in Thailand. Renowned as possibly the wildest and most lawless party town in all of Asia, enter with extreme caution; no one leaves with soul intact!

When you arrive in Phuket, you will find plenty of tourist agencies who arrange day trips to other parts of Thailand, or with our help and advice we can help you book travel and work out what is best for what you require. Cheap buses are available from the main Phuket terminal, and the domestic airlines have flights available from HKT International Airport to Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Hat Yai (south) and more. Whatever it is you are looking for, Thailand has somewhere that will accommodate your needs.

Phuket is a tropical island to the south of Thailand. It is a favourite spot of tourists, and millions of foreign holidaymakers flock to its shores on an annual basis, the great majority for the south-to-mid-west coastal resorts of Nai Harn, Kata, Karon and Patong Beach.

Phuket is connected via bridge to mainland Thailand, and with that, and the size of many of the main roads for thoroughfare Phuket does not feel like an island to some. It is roughly the size of Singapore or Ibiza, and the beyond the roads much of Phuket is covered in a leafy tropical green, with coconut trees and vegetation in plain sight wherever you look.

The natural beauty of Phuket and its beaches is what led to it becoming one of the most popular tourist destinations in Asia. Getting around is easy; for 3,000 THB you can hire a motorized scooter, and this is the most popular method of transport for most visitors.

From Rawai in the south and Nai Harn Beach in the southwest, it is a mere thirty minute coastal drive to get to Patong Beach via Kata and Karon, which covers the most densely populated tourist beaches and resorts.

Inland and further north of Patong there are quieter places to live, and more untouched coves and bays can be found in the northeast and west. Phukets main population centre is the inland provincial administrative centre of Phuket Town. Here you will find a more authentically southern-Thailand settlement with less emphasis on tourism.

From here you can take the songthaew (public transport bus) to the coastal resorts and back, and here is where the bus terminal is from which you can travel to other parts of Thailand. Phuket Town boasts markets and the widest array of shopping available on the island, as well as a selection of bars and restaurants for most tastes and moods.

Rawai and Chalong Bay both have piers from which boats take passengers out to the islands on day trips; this is a favourite pastime of visitors. The islands surrounding Phuket are much more untouched than for example, the mainland beaches, and a day travelling round, sightseeing and snorkeling would certainly be an experience to remember.

Phi Phi Don island is a favourite too; its smaller neighbor Phi Phi Lei and its Maya Bay beach were of course famously used in the film The Beach, which directly led to a significant rise of tourism to Phuket.

There are a variety of attractions in Phuket from the beaches to the national parks to the aquarium, the zoo, the many lookout points and beautiful spots to eat, relax and enjoy the view that can be found dotted around the islands higher ground, and of course not to mention the myriad of authentic Thai experiences and sights to be had and seen for those who venture off the beaten track.

Whatever your tastes, Phuket will likely cater to you; from the coastal resorts where it is perfectly possible to have a lazy and relaxed time or even a family holiday, to the most authentic Thai experience inland or north, the serenity of the more sparse northern areas and bays, and the wildness of Patong Beach. Phuket has a little something for everybody and every taste and need.

Patong beach

Patong Beach is the busiest tourist destination in Phuket. This coastal resorts welcomes millions of people to it every year, due to its ideal location in the mouth of a horseshoe bay and its white sandy beach, and the wildness of its nightlife that keeps the younger, more party-centric holidaymakers coming back for more, and that maintains Patong Beachs status as the go-to place for ex-pat nights out to boot.

That is not to say that the reputation and party-vibe Patong Beach has necessarily interferes with the training! Several Lumpinee Stadium champions have lived and trained in Patong Beach, and Buakaw himself was a recent visitor to Maximum Fitness & Combat Centre, as well as a brief competitor at nearby Patong Stadium.

Patong Beach boasts the two major boxing stadiums of Phuket island; Patong Boxing Stadium and Bangla Boxing Stadium. Neither one has any clear advantage; both are televised, both deal with most of the notable gyms on the island, both host great fights and some sterling fighters.

The stadiums host events on alternate nights, and at both stadiums the fights are a favourite with Muay Thai aficionados and interested tourists alike; to some, a way of life and a passion, to others, merely an intriguing and adrenaline-pumping start to a night out watching Thai-boxers punch, kick, knee, and elbow each other in the Art of Eight Limbs as only Thailand can provide it.

Soi Bangla or Bangla Road is only a left turn and several hundred metres away from Bangla Stadium, and it is not only Patong Beachs but the islands go-to place if you want a wild night out. Go-go bars, Thai girls and drunken tourists line the streets in a carnival of characters and lights, and touts try to entice you into nightclubs and ping-pong shows.

It is the most colourful, wildest and most unpredictable night out in the south of Thailand and Phuket, and definitely something that everyone under a certain age and disposition should tick off the bucket list at some point! As with Rawai and Chalong Bay, day trips are available from Patong Beach to a variety of islands.

Patong Beach has three or four main roads running through the town almost in its entirety one of which is the beachfront road, another the road that runs parallel to it inland on the other side of Soi Bangla which connects the two and along every road you will find an unending choice of restaurants, bars, massage parlours, tattoo parlours, shops, bars, restaurants, massage parlours, you get the idea. Patong Beach caters to countless tourists every year, and whatever your needs and requirements, you should be able to find they are met here.

You will then come to the next intersection (Sawatdirak rd.), stay on the beach side of the road, cross the intersection and you will see directly on the left a tattoo shop called Bangla Ink #4 and a money exchange, just alongside of the store is a stairway that takes you up to the best training facility in the whole Phuket, if not Thailand.
