Mantranaya background

Mantranaya Buddhism is a tradition of esoteric Buddhism found in Indonesia. It is historically evident before 700 AD and in the oldest existent Javanese, esoteric, Buddhist literature. It predates the arrival of esoteric Buddhism in Greater Tibet and the Himalayan region.

Many people believe that Indonesian, esoteric Buddhism is already extinct after the fall of Majapahit empire but in fact, this esoteric tradition is still alive, handed down by an unbroken lineage in their sanctuary. The tradition was saved and nurtured by ancient Javanese people who migrated from central Java to Bali about thousand years ago.

The group named their new village Budhakeling, which means the black Buddha. In Bali, a Hindu-majority society, the Budhakeling people still hold and nurture their esoteric practice of Buddhism as inherited from their ancestors. Mantranaya strongly connects the magical side of Buddhism with elements drawn from the beliefs and practices common in ancient societies.

There are certain important teachings in Mantranaya that are expressed in a secret, symbolic language known as sandhyā-bhāṣā, twilight Language. Mudras and mantras, maṇḍalas and chakras, those mysterious devices and diagrams are part of this twilight language. Mantranaya also uses techniques, such as upaya or skillful means, which must be initiated and transmitted esoterically through a skilled spiritual teacher.

This retreat includes a one-day tour that will culminate in participating in the full moon ritual.
