Despite all its popularity, today very few people truly know what meditation is. Some regard meditation as the mental concentration on something, others consider that people meditate when they imagine something that gives them peace or satisfaction. All these methods are being with one goal to slow down and eventually completely stop the incessant activity of their minds.

These exercises are not really meditation, they are substitutes for meditation because it is normally very difficult to stop the mind altogether. In reality, meditation is a state of thoughtless awareness. It is not an act of doing, it is an act of awareness. People doing meditation are either in this state or not, regardless of what they are doing in life. Truly, a man can be in meditation while doing his day’s labors as another man can when he is very far from meditation while sitting in a lotus posture on the top of a mountain.

When people take a look at the various explanations of meditation, another thing they often see is that meditation is defined as taking a moment to sit quietly or to ponder. True meditation however, is much more than this. It is a state of profound, deep peace that occurs when the mind is calm and silent, yet completely alert.

This is just the beginning of an inner transformation that takes you to a higher level of awareness. This enables you to fulfil your true human potential. The problem of today is how to achieve the state. Authentic meditation enables one to focus on the present moment rather than dwell on the unchangeable past or undetermined future. The theoretical explanation for the effects of meditation and relaxation techniques is that the release of catecholamine’s and other stress hormones are reduced and parasympathetic activity is increased.

Manthan Yogic Village gives you a unique insight into yoga, whether you are a beginner or have practiced for many years. At Manthan Yogic Village, yoga is non-denominational and open to people of all faiths, we appeal to those who wish to familiarize themselves with this ancient Indian philosophy, without necessarily delving into its religious aspects.

Often misunderstood to be simply a set of physical exercises, yoga is a practice that allows us to look deep within the self for answers to questions of existence and being. Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word “yuj” meaning, “to join” or “to yoke” and refers to the process of joining the mind with the body and ultimately the individual self (prakriti) with the divine self (purusha). Yoga has an amazing effect on our body and mind energies, restores balance into our lives allowing us to deal with life’s ups and downs with a sense of calmness. It resolves our inner conflicts, enables total excellence, and allows us to fulfil our potential to become complete human beings.

In Ayurveda the emphasise is on a sattvic diet for healthy living, particularly for keeping your minds clear, happy, and at peace. The original sattvic diet was devised for the development of higher consciousness. Sattvic foods are foods that are abundant in prana, the universal life force that gives life to all sentient beings in both plant and animal kingdoms.

A sattvic diet means not only vegetarian food, but food rich in prana, life force like organic fresh fruits and vegetables. It requires avoiding canned and processed food, and foods prepared with chemical fertilizers or sprays, it also means properly prepared fresh foods. Foods prepared with lots of love will add to their sattvic quality.

Sattvic foods should be grown without pesticides, herbicides, chemical fertilizers, hormones, irradiation, or anything unnatural. Modern use of refinement processes and chemical additives, besides actually adding substances to your foods, depletes foods of their prana or life-force. Hence, renders them heavy, impotent, and lifeless.

For those who wish to explore different aspects of the yoga practice, there are sessions teaching pranayama (understanding and regulating our breath), pratyahara (withdrawal or internalization of sensory inputs), dharana (concentration), and dhyana (meditation).

Restorative, invigorating, relaxing, and detoxifying, the therapies at Manthan Yogic Village Rejuvenation Spa gently coax the body and mind to a state of balance and enhance well-being. "Accommodation was satisfactory. Rooms were spacious, clean with comfortable bedding. The staff was extremely nice, tending to my needs and keeping the grounds neat and clean. However, the overall ambiance not conducive to a yoga retreat. Guests on the property were drinking alcohol and smoking."

"The Ayurveda experience was excellent. The doctor listened and addressed my concerns. The facility was extremely clean and again staff was great."

"As for my yoga experience, not to my expectations. The instructors were both knowledgeable but I was looking for more of a "teaching" environment not merely a guided practice. I feel that being in India, tradition should be maintained. ..using the sanskrit terminology instead of western version. I feel the program can be further enhanced by adding lectures on yoga...the origination, the benefits to our body systems, etc."

"I would recommend Manthan for a short holiday but not as a yoga retreat." Website, edited

"Manthan Yogic Village was a great experience and exceeded my expectations. I was treated like gold from the minute I arrived. I did Yoga 2 times a day and also had 1 personal class - the Yoga teacher Konti was great and has a great way of explaining; he has inspired me to continue my practice. I also availed of the Ayurvedic Treatments and the onsite Doctor and his staff were amazing and very professional. The place itself is situated beside Morjim Beach which is lovely for a nice walk or swim. " Website, edited

"My stay at Manthan Yogic Village was perfect for peace and quiet and relaxation. The yoga classes were a highlight, the teachings were a mix of dynamic and softer flow and the teacher was lovely. Also great to have the Ayurvedic treatments onsite as that encouraged me to try this kind of treatment which was very different to what I've ever tried before. The treatments were relaxing and staff took great care. As I visited during the off season and was I think the only patron, I don't believe the village was fully serviced as there was no need but I do believe it is a simple, relaxing place, staff were amazingly attentive and helpful, really lovely. Rooms were quite nice, probably on a three star rating. If you are looking for a relaxing yoga centric break, right on the beach, this is perfect. "
