Experience a core of the yogic spiritual path on this introductory weekend to the yogic ashram lifestyle. Both mornings of the weekend will be engaged in the upkeep or expansion of the ashram and surrounding properties. This may include working in the kitchen, housekeeping, garden, grounds, maintenance, the farm, office, renovation, in a creative project, or whatever is required.
Mangrove Yoga Ashram is a residential yoga center based on ashram principles. It is a place where one can spend time away from the usual distractions of daily life and focus on understanding ones own experience and purpose in life. An ashram is a place of simplicity and regularity.
You will be staying at the retreat centers accommodation in standard triple share room is. The accommodation blocks are spread over the center. If you have special health needs that preclude climbing a hill or walking any distance, please let Mangrove Yoga Ashram know.
Room heaters operate on a timer in order to maintain comfort levels throughout the coldest times: early morning and evening.
The halls are available for private practice when not in use for group classes. They provide a beautiful tranquil space enhanced by the positive vibration built up from decades of yoga practice.
Tea making facilities are available in our dining room 24 hours a day. Also, nearby is a fridge which guests may use for storing any special food requirements.
A laundry is available with coin operated washing machines and there are tubs for hand washing. A large outside clothes line for drying washing is available for all residents and guests. A coin operated dryer is also available.
This is a general yoga class which includes asana (postures), pranayama (breathing practices), and meditation and / or relaxation. The aim is to make the class a suitable level for the students present, however often the level of experience of those present varies a lot, so please make sure you are responsible for your own practice and don't do anything which does not feel appropriate to your own needs. Absolute beginners are more than welcome to attend. You are very welcome to vary the practices to suit you or to sit out a practice. If you have special health needs which you feel you may not know how to manage yourself during class, please arrive a little early for the class and let the teacher know.
This is a short session of chanting to start the day in a harmonious way; it is open to all residents and guests. The chants are usually Sanskrit mantras which have a positive effect at a vibratory level both personally and within the atmosphere.
The ashram is primarily run by the voluntary efforts of those living in and visiting the center, who spend most of the day performing a practice known as Karma yoga. Karma yoga is the yoga of meditative action. It involves being mindfully engaged in all activities of the day without being motivated by ones own personal needs. Karma yoga is the most powerful yogic practice for seeing ones strengths and limitations, reactions and motivations.
All visitors are encouraged to participate in the 08:00 morning Karma yoga session to experience this aspect of the yogic lifestyle at Mangrove. The morning Karma yoga session includes participating in activities such as housekeeping, gardening, and managing the kitchen, according to one's capacity. You are also encouraged to join in one of the meal cleanups each day. To do so, go to the kitchen half an hour after meal time and ask for the cleanup.
A meditative relaxation practice performed in a lying position. This is a favorite practice of many guests and residents.
There is a variety of programs on over the course of the week. Friday and Saturday nights are kirtan - chanting of mantras to music, an uplifting and expressive practice.
The spiritual discipline of mouna (silence) is practiced daily within the ashram grounds from 20:15 until the 07:30 the following morning. Mouna provides the opportunity for self-reflection and inner observation. As a courtesy to others please respect this period of silence.
Mangrove Yoga Ashram is located in a quiet country location, 15 kilometers from any facilities and out of mobile phone range. For first time guests it is essential to arrive during daylight hours.
Three wholesome and delicious meals are served each day, along with morning and afternoon tea of fruit and tea. Meals are vegetarian, and the kitchen uses a wide variety of high-quality, all-natural ingredients to offer nutritionally sound and tasty meals. Fresh salad greens, herbs and other vegetables are provided daily from own vegetable garden.
All cooks are encouraged to embrace an attitude of devotional service with regard to food preparation. The simple vegetarian / vegan meals Mangrove Yoga Ashram serves are first offered to the source of our sustenance, as a way of demonstrating Mangrove Yoga Ashrams appreciation and gratitude.
Mangrove Yoga Ashram asks that all embrace this sentiment and accept gracefully the meals that are provided during your stay. This also avoids placing unnecessary pressure on kitchen staff and resources.
Mangrove Yoga Ashram serves balanced vegetarian food, with lots of grains, fresh fruit and vegetables, a little dairy and eggs.
Unfortunately, Mangrove Yoga Ashram cannot cater for those with severe dietary restrictions or those following diets such as low carb, paleo, or raw vegan.
The accommodations well-stocked shop provides a wide range of yogic books, CDs and DVDs, along with mats, neti pots, candles, incense, skincare, herbal teas, malas, meditation stools and cushions. Clothing is also available and the accommodation has an extensive range of yoga gear.
In the lower Sadhana room there is a lounge area which is cool in summer and warm in winter. There are comfy chairs for reading and plenty of books which can also be borrowed and taken to your room or a nice nook of the garden for reading. The library also has a great range of books and is a nice place to hang out.
The creek is great for swimming in summer and kayaking at any time. Other fun options for some healthy exercise are walking through the surrounding bush, playing volleyball or badminton (the volleyball court works well for this too).
The Saraswati Library located at Mangrove Yoga Ashram is a research library specializing in the subject area of yoga and related disciplines such as spirituality, religion, philosophy, psychology and health. It contains close to 6000 books on these and other topics and as such is probably one of the most comprehensive collections of books on yoga and meditation in the Southern Hemisphere.
The library is open for guests and visitors as a reading room whenever the receptionist or librarian is present. Loans are available to residents, staff, affiliated teachers and students studying the Diploma of Satyananda Yoga Training at specific times.
Saraswati Library has grown largely due to donations given by visitors or residents over the past twenty years. Thank you to all those people who have helped share the teachings of yoga through their donations. The library is happy to accept any donations of books on yoga and related topics.
If you intend to travel by bus you must inform reception in advance so that Mangrove Yoga Ashram may arrange for a car to pick you up at the designated set down point. Should you miss the bus or change your travel arrangements, Mangrove Yoga Ashram asks that you notify Mangrove Yoga Ashram immediately.
