Run as a centre for sustainable living and the creative arts, the Quadrangle has beautiful elements with which to enjoy our stay: the main barn for our group practices and communal dining, the shepherds barn with wood burner to put your feet up with a cup of tea, the garden for fireside meditation and contemplation, a living permaculture forest garden, and a stream running through for some wild dipping! The hills and vales of the Pilgrims Way are in reach just a short walk cross-country. You can choose to stay in the dorm, yurt or bell tent.

Maha Yoga have put this retreat together for a chance for you consider what has come to pass, to allow you to move forward as freely as the seasons. Each day will consist of a gentle rhythm of rejuvenating yoga, fireside movement meditations and walks in nature.

Ayurvedic yoga massage

Ayurvedic yoga massage is a unique, relaxing treatment for the whole body, combining deep tissue massage, coordinated breath-work and yoga stretching. Ayurveda is the ancient Indian system of natural healing. AYM combines deep tissue massage with coordinated breath-work and yoga stretching. Its founder Master Kusum Modak has combined traditional Ayurvedic massage with yoga adjustments learnt directly from BKS Iyengar. It’s performed on a floor mat allowing for a full range of stretching. In addition; the deep tissue massage dissolves physical tension, while the assisted stretches and breath exercises realign the body and stimulate the natural flow of energy. Organic sesame oil (a tri-dosha balancer), and ground calamus root (invigorates the skin / stimulates the nervous system) are used in the treatment.

Transformational yoga

Transformational yoga is a truly integral yoga that goes far beyond just physical exercise. While offering a complete approach to well-being, it takes into account physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of health. It functions on a deeper level to stimulate Kundalini energy to move up through the chakras, purifying and awakening the chakras. In this heart-centered practice we combine physical postures (asanas), breathing practices (pranayama) and dhyana (mantra meditation), as well as meditation and deep relaxation (yoga Nidra), to purify your body, balance your emotions, heal your heart, focus your mind, and increase your spiritual wellbeing, helping you to let go and connect with your true nature.

Shamanic journeying

The shamanic journey is the primary method used to access other realms, where guidance, insight, and counsel regarding this realm can be found. The method for journeying may vary, but it usually involves the clear setting of intention, and the use of drum, plant medicine, ecstatic dance or other tools to allow the ego to step aside, to let spirit in, and let the imagination run free to travel and seek. During the retreat, you’ll be introduced to these practices, with an explanation of the methods and tools used, and with the drum and a clear intention we will journey together. Please bring an open and curious mind!

The Quadrangle is a large Victorian model farmstead built in 1870 near Shoreham in Kent. Part of it is owned and managed by The Quadrangle Trust which is run as a centre for sustainable living and the creative arts. The garden runs down through an orchard to the River Darent and a field and small woodland beyond. Its setting in the valley is extraordinarily rural and peaceful in that it is only 20 miles from Piccadilly Circus as the crow flies.

Maha Yoga has had retreats here before, and it’s the perfect place to quietly observe and reflect on Mother Nature in transition, in a beautiful rustic farmhouse setting.

"Katy’s practice combines sensitivity and depth, bringing awareness to mind, body, and spirit. I really enjoy her use of different breathing techniques in sequences, I find it has helped me to focus on the detail of postures. I come away from class feeling grounded and peaceful and full of energy to face whatever the day brings with a smile. "

"I was feeling very fragile and in frequent pain. I am (still) undertaking a very strong therapeutic yoga practice at home to resolve significant pain in my hips, legs, and neck. I was a bit nervous to attend a yoga class as every time I’ve done so over the past year, I’ve hurt myself. However, recently, I try to be or gently I try to go. With Katy’s class at the festival, I found it easy to find my flow and pace so I was able to join in with almost everything. I left feeling centered, connected, and open. I only managed two with my work schedule, but I am so very pleased I attended them. If you teach at another festival, I will endeavor to attend them all! Thanks, Katy and best wishes."

"I first met Katy at an alternate festival. During this festival, she taught yoga every morning. I really enjoyed Katy’s classes because they left me calm, tranquil, and prepared for the day ahead. These classes helped me to rejuvenate from the mentally and physically exhausting nature of the festival. Katy did a fantastic job of guiding the class, and I never felt overwhelmed by any of her exercises - even as a beginner. The thing I love most about Katy is her warm and compassionate personality. The energy she exudes makes you feel completely at ease. Unlike other yoga instructors, Katy is strongly devoted to her art. She spends significant time studying in India which is unique and a testament to her commitment. I’m so pleased to have met Katy and definitely recommend her if you want to practice yoga. "

"I loved doing all the chanting! I don’t know if it was specifically due to that but I felt much less tension in my body after the weekend. I felt fully present and forgot about everything outside of the retreat. I felt like it was a little bubble of love that I was enveloped in which we all appreciated, supported, and accepted each other. We were able to freely express ourselves, be playful, and silly. We had a full program which struck the right balance between taking it seriously but not too seriously. I’m now more into chanting than ever and have started integrating the transformational breaths into my personal yoga routine."

"I can't express how much I gained from the retreat. The physical, mental, and spiritual changes were overwhelming. The teachings from Swami and Katy blew me away. They created a space where we were able to open up and develop over the week. I left feeling focused, content, and relaxed. My heart feels like its full to the brim and people commented on how sparkly my eyes are looking, they also said they have never seen me looking so happy!"

"Katy helps me to feel open, calm, and focused with her inclusive, supportive, and receptive teaching style. During her yoga classes, I feel present, but I also go on a journey to deeper awareness which is amazing! She uses her deep spiritual understanding and yoga knowledge to connect you with you for the precious time that you are in the class, but more importantly her guidance stays with you long afterwards. Since taking Katy's classes, my mind is clear, my body is flexible and strong, and I have an awareness of myself and others that I didn't think was possible. Her classes are the highlight of my week, but even more, they have become part of my life."
