Retreat location

Nepal is a big country if you compare it with the ones in central and eastern Europe and the Indo-China region. It has vivid feathers and it is safe to ponder on a fact or two before visiting this mesmerizing place. Magic Himalaya Trek's traveling tips for Nepal will tell you about various aspects and features of Nepal. Try and spend some time going through these tips, they might prove handy to you.

First of all, Nepal has a vivid relief; the northern and eastern part is completely covered by a greater Himalaya while the southern part is Terai or field. The temperature varies according to the relief. In the northern areas, it can dip as low as -5 degrees Celsius, in winter, while in the southern terai areas, are as hot as 45 degrees Celsius; try to bring clothes according to your visit plan and season.

If you are on a trek then bring some really warm clothes; start with Cavanders trekking suits and keep good gloves as well. For Terai, light cotton clothes will do. In terms of communication, Kathmandu, the capital city, is well connected to the rest of the world by air services. Regular flights are available from major cities; from Europe, Asia, and America.

As for the local transport, you will have a car or taxi but if you are less on cash then buses are the next options. There are quite a few luxury buses and they run on normally all the major routes. Nepal provides travel police who are very cooperative and helpful; take their help if you find yourself in trouble. Don’t get involved with drug peddlers and pimps, of whom there is no scarcity in Nepal.

Avoid going out at night in the rebel-infested areas of Terai. Avoid political processions and conglomerations completely and avoid talking about internal politics to strangers. As for food and drinks, try to dine at good hotels and avoid roadside joints unless very necessary. You can enjoy authentic street foods from good and hygienic kiosks. Keep these things in mind and Nepal will welcome you with open arms.

Dos and don'ts

With diverse ethnic groups and traditional beliefs, Nepal has numerous cultural practices that may appear unusual to a person on his/her first visit to the country, however, to enjoy your stay in this remarkable country of the white Himalayas and sparkling rivers, it is important to take into consideration the different cultural aspects of the country. Here is a list of things that may be helpful to you:

  • The form of greeting in Nepal is “Namaste” and is performed by joining the palms together.
  • While entering a Nepalese home, temples, stupas, and other monuments, you always need to remember one thing: you need to remove your shoes.
  • Be careful, you are not allowed to use your spoon, fork, or a hand being used for eating to touch others' food, plate, cooking utensils, or serving disk. Do not eat from other people’s plates and do not drink from others' bottles or glasses; it is considered impure by Nepalese.
  • Never touch anything with your feet; this is considered an offense among Nepalese.
  • While you're traveling, dress appropriately and women should especially avoid dressing in skimpy outfits.
  • People need to seek permission first before entering any Hindu temple because Hindu temples do not allow Westerners or non-Hindus to enter.
  • Leather articles are prohibited to be taken inside the temple precinct.
  • Walking around the temples or stupa is traditionally done clockwise.
  • Take photographs only after receiving permission from the object or person being photographed.
  • Public display of affection between men and women is frowned upon; do not do something that is totally alien to the Nepalese environment.
  • Develop a genuine desire to meet and talk to Nepalese people and respect their local customs.
  • Please do not touch offerings or persons when they are on the way to shrines or are in the process of worshiping; keep a respectful distance.
  • Please do not accept gifts or buy objects of art, manuscripts, images, etc. which have antique value, these need to stay here not only for the Nepalese but for future visitors like you who would like to share the experience. Whether something is antique or not can be established by the Department of Archaeology, please be informed that Nepalese men can be established by the Department of Archaeology.
  • It is necessary to be informed that Nepalese men often walk around hand in hand but this does not have the same implication as it does in Europe, America, or other developed countries.
  • It is not good to inquire about a person’s caste.
