You will be staying in twin room accommodation at Macalla Farm. The accommodation is comfortable and relaxing with beautiful views of Clew Bay and Croagh Patrick. Two buildings make up the accommodation, one is an ecologically renovated cottage built at the turn of the last century, and one is a renovated outbuilding known as the extension. Both of these houses are strictly non-smoking and do not have Wi-Fi, television, microwave, or hairdryer. All bed linen is provided except for towels, which you will need to bring with you.

You will discover that mindfulness (Sati) is not just a fashionable add-on but a unique capacity of awareness to be diligently cultivated. Through a creative mix of taught classes, group work, dharma talks, and presentations, periods of silence and karma yoga, guided meditations, self-practice sessions, mindfulness practice in nature, the training serves to re-connect us to what matters.

This course can be taken as stand-alone intensive training, providing 60 hours. This course includes a preliminary online module that introduces the four foundational principles of Sati yoga: ethics, body, breath, and mind and clarifies what to expect on the course. A number of reflections and homework exercises must be completed as preparation for this course.

As this is an advanced course, when requesting to book, please provide as many details as possible about your yoga and meditation background, and explain why you are interested in this course.

This training is suitable for:

Those who are looking for training that honors their individuality and encourages the growth of their unique teaching voice and style; going beyond standardized sequences and the physical dimensions of yoga.

Sati Yoga Teacher Training

Sati Yoga Teacher Training establishes a solid foundation in the traditional elements of asana, breathwork, and meditation through mostly experiential and practical study. But the training is more than this: through the cultivation of your capacity to become more aware (Sati - mindfulness) and the exploration of the ethics that are inseparable from both yoga and mindfulness, your practice becomes deeply relevant to the contemporary situation, allowing you to respond creatively to the increasingly imbalanced and precarious world we live in.

You will explore how yoga can help us cultivate our best selves by making manifest the values we hold dear. Through self-inquiry and practice, you become a vital force, off the yoga mat - to effect positive and powerful change in the world.

By learning to deepen your experience of your body, your breath, your mind through the practice and study of Sati yoga, a balanced practice that is underpinned by an ethical intelligence develops and matures. It is a practice that extends well beyond the physical postures.

Macalla Farm wants to support you on this journey to become a teacher who is true to one’s values- one who can teach from the intimacy of one’s own experience – not by memorizing set sequences and large numbers of asanas or teaching postures that you are not familiar with. Throughout the training, your teaching skills and capacity develop organically from an ever-deepening place of integrity, wisdom, and confidence.

This course is for you if:

  • You’re looking to deepen your practice and understanding of yoga that goes far beyond the physical postures
  • You wish to bring that understanding into your daily life as a unique force for transformation and share it with others
  • You are interested in exploring the integration of classical yoga and early Buddhist teachings from a non-dogmatic and secular perspective
  • You already teach yoga and wish to deepen your practice and explore teaching in a different, possibly more intuitive way

Retreat location

This intensive yoga teacher training will take place in Clare Island, Ireland. Clare Island lies off the west coast of Ireland at the entrance to Clew Bay. The largest of the off-shore is Mayo islands, it has a varied terrain: spectacular cliffs with large numbers of nesting seabirds and a rich ‘inland’ topography of hills and bogs and small pockets of woodland, making it ideal for hill-walking. The island’s complex history can be read through its landscape: from archaeological remains of the Neolithic and Bronze age to rare medieval wall paintings in the 14th-century abbey to the ‘pirate queen’ Grace O’Malley’s (Grainneuaile) castle and burial place.

Everywhere there are traces of past generations, most significant is the 19th-century population explosion and subsequent famine when the island’s population of 1600 was reduced by half. Old potato ridges or ‘lazy beds’ are everywhere: the evening sun reveals them jutting out from the land. The island has been much studied, with the R.L. Praeger’s The Clare Island Survey perhaps the most well known.

The island lies roughly four miles off the nearest mainland point and the ferry crossing from Roonagh Pier takes approximately 25 minutes. The current permanent population of 150 increases substantially during the summer tourist season. The island has a number of Bed and Breakfast, a hostel with a bar/restaurant, a community center, and pub, and one shop which is also the post office. There is a primary school on the island, with 22 students and 2 teachers, but no secondary school.

Daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included in the price. All meals are vegetarian and prepared fresh with locally and organically sourced ingredients. At Macalla Farm, they are interested in all aspects of food, including where it comes from, how it is grown, how it is prepared, and how it is eaten.

Claire and Christophe pay great attention to the quality of ingredients they use, nearly all the produce used is organic or homegrown. They are vegetarian and the food on all the courses is strictly vegetarian (with vegan and gluten-free options on request). Over the years, as they grow more of their own food, producing, and eating meals that are both delicious and healthy, it has become clear to them that food must not only sustain, but nurture as well.

Through the food they serve on their courses and retreats, as well as their seasonal vegetarian cooking courses and mindful eating retreats, they hope to inspire you to eat with this fuller consciousness. One can then re-discover the satisfaction that comes from connecting with real food, food that has been grown in soil that is rich with vitality, prepared in a kitchen with attention and care, and eaten with awareness.

How to get there

Recommended Airports

Driving directions from Westport

From Westport take the coast road to Louisburgh (10 miles) and drive straight through Louisburgh. About a quarter of a mile after the village, just after the Nomadic Display factory on the right, take a right turn to Roonagh (the road is clearly signposted for Roonagh Pier and Clare Island). It is a further 4 miles to the pier. Allow a good 35 minutes from Westport to Roonagh.

Arrival by airplane

There are direct buses from Dublin Airport to Dublin Heuston train station (the journey will take around 1 hour).

Arrival by train from Dublin

The train from Dublin to Westport (leaving from Dublin Heuston station) takes around 3.5 hours. To arrive in Westport in time you will need to take the lunchtime train. If you are planning to travel by train, it is usually far cheaper to book your journey online at IrishRail in advance, rather than buying your ticket at the station on the day.

If coming by bus or train you need to be in Westport by 4 p.m. For scheduled retreats and courses, Macalla Farm will try to put you in touch with another course participant who can give you a lift from Westport, or if numbers warrant, Macalla Farm will organize a shared minibus.

Cancellation Policy

  • A reservation requires a deposit of 50% of the total price.
  • The deposit is non-refundable, if the booking is cancelled.
