During the retreat, you will be staying at Bala Brook Retreat Centre. There are nine bedrooms in the house which can accommodate up to fourteen people. Rooms are available in either private single rooms or twin room. Five of the rooms have en-suite facilities, other rooms have a shared bathroom.

Library

The library is a quiet seating area with books on yoga, Buddhism, poetry, spiritual paths, Devon, birds, nature, and maps. There is a small bedroom attached to the library.

Kitchen, dining, and living room

A large kitchen area with an Aga cooker, electric hob, and oven, equipped for preparing vegetarian meals for up to fourteen people. The tables in the dining area can be arranged to suit the size of the group. Folding doors open onto the garden.

Program

The program will support you to nurture yourself through yoga, both empowering and restorative, deep rest, breathing exercises, and meditation, including a special evening sequence for better sleep. There will be some periods of silence providing a precious opportunity to find the still place within.

You will also learn about how the food you're consuming is actually affecting your experience during menopause. All food and recipes during the retreat have been carefully researched and selected to be beneficial for women at this time of their lives. At Bala Brook, they are surrounded by nature and there will be opportunities to explore the atmospheric landscape of Dartmoor or you can choose to relax, be still and soak in the innate peace of this special place.

Please note that the schedule times and activities may change. All levels are welcome but to benefit most it is advisable to have some basic experience of yoga.

Retreat location

Bala Brook is a stunning location on the edge of Dartmoor National Park and on the edge of the open moor. There are thirty-five acres of delightful gardens, fields, mature oak trees, and woodland adjoining the waterfalls of Bala Brook, which tumbles down to join the river Avon. The venue has a resident flock of Hebridean sheep. The nearest large town and station is Totnes, which is 12 kilometers away.

A gate from the meadow leads out onto the wide open moor. From the front, it is a short walk up the lane to Shipley Bridge and pedestrian track leading up to the Avon reservoir and higher open moor. An exhilarating walk northwards brings strong hikers to Princetown in the center of Dartmoor. Another walk westwards leads to the famous ancient oaks at Piles Wood alongside the exquisite river Erme. There are other, gentler walks around, some through woodland.

Food

During the retreat, your meals will be prepared by Polly. Polly grew up in Devon and has had a keen interest in food - both growing and cooking - from an early age. She chose the vegetarian road in her teens and has been experimenting on her family ever since!

Since experiencing the beginning of the menopause, Polly has been looking into how a change in diet can be influential during this sometimes challenging time of menopause and continues to research the subject.

She cooks regularly at Bala Brook. There are some recent quotes include: “The food worked really well, it was delicious”; “I felt really nurtured”; “Thanks for your delicious food and heartfelt presence on the retreat”.

All the food and recipes on the retreat have been carefully researched and selected to be especially beneficial for women at this time of their lives.

How to get there

Driving directions from Exeter

  • Driving south after Exeter, leave the A38 at Marley Head, (north-east of South Brent,) wriggle north-westwards around lanes following signs to Avon Dam.
  • Arrive at Shipley Bridge public car park, beside river Avon.
  • At Shipley Bridge, cross the River Avon, follow the lane turning around to the left, southwards over a cattle grid.
  • After 2 minutes down the lane, go past one farm on your right, down a little hill over a little bridge and look out for ‘Bala Brook’ sign on your right beside a timber gateway. This is the second habitation on your right after leaving Shipley bridge.

Driving directions from Plymouth

Approaching from the South (from Plymouth) turn off the A38 for South Brent. But avoid going through the village by taking a left turn soon after leaving the A38, where there is a big main sign 'South Brent twinned with...', and signs for Brent Mill Business park and Aish.

  • Go under the railway and around to the right to reach a T junction.
  • Turn left up to Aish and thence on up, nearly 2 miles towards Shipley Bridge.
  • After a 'weak bridge', look out for Bala Brook on your left in a dip just before the little Bala bridge. If you arrive at Shipley Bridge, you have gone too far. You are advised to not enter any unsigned properties.

Arrival by train

Travel to Totnes station then take a taxi, it's about 8 miles. There is a half hour bus service to South Brent from Totnes station. Transfer from Totnes train station is available upon request.

  • A reservation requires a deposit of 16.94% of the total price.
  • The deposit is non-refundable, if the booking is cancelled.
  • The rest of the payment should be paid 21 days before arrival.
