4 surfing lessons in Santa Teresa for all levels

We will start your surf lesson with teaching the basics of surfing, safety tips, paddling techniques, followed by standing up and riding the waves. The time of the surf lesson depends on the tide, usually the lesson is scheduled between low and mid tide. With a private lesson you are guaranteed to get the most of your time in the water. If you already know how to surf, we will discuss your level of experience and what you are looking to improve.

Free time

There will be a few free afternoons to schedule additional activities or to just relax by the pool or on the beach. If you want to spend extra time in the water to practice your surfing skills you are always free to take our boards out whenever you want. Arrival by airplane

You can choose to fly into San Jose (SJO) the capital of Costa Rica or Liberia (LIR)

It is easier to fly into San Jose but sometimes flights to Liberia are a lot cheaper which makes it a better choice to fly here instead. From both airports it is about the same distance to get to us but from San Jose you have more options!

$26 USD departure tax is payable at the international airport by all foreign passengers departing on international flights.

Once you are in Costa Rica, the closest airport to us is Tambor. Domestic flights are 20 minutes and cost around 90 USD. The two airlines that fly from San Jose to Tambor are Sansa and Nature Air. To make reservations go to. or

Arrival by bus

For the more adventurous traveler there is the option to take a direct bus to Santa Teresa. It leaves from the Coca Cola bus station in San Jose at 7 am and 2 pm. The drive takes 5 hours (including the one hour ferry ride). A ticket costs $10 USD one way.

Even though this option is a little more challenging, because you have to take a cab to the bus station, find the right bus etc. Once youre on the bus it is a direct shot and you dont have to worry about your luggage or changing busses.

Arrival by shuttle

From San Jose you can also take a shuttle to Santa Teresa. It will pick you up from your hotel or the airport and will take you directly to us. The drive is about 4-5 hours including a 1 hour ferry ride.

The price is $45 USD per person and it leaves at 9 am. If you would like to leave at a different time the price is $200 USD for a private shuttle, up to seven people. To make reservations go to

Arrival by taxi

Once in Tambor, expect a 45 minute taxi ride. Taxis cost approximately $50 USD for 1-4 people and $10 USD for each additional person.

Seasonals information

High Season in Costa Rica is from December till end of May. But this is not the only good time to visit the country! June till August is a really nice time to be here, a few showers at night make the area less dry. Everybody has been waiting for this rain after the long dry season and it makes the flowers and plants look beautiful! from September till the beginning of November there is a chance to get a lot of rain, this is considered the hear to the rainy season, and even thought you can never predict what its going to be like, the chances are big there will be more rain then you would like on your vacation! During the months September and October we are closed! Know that if you want to come during Christmas or spring break you have to make your reservations very early and everything will be more expensive during this time.

A trip to the Montezuma waterfall. Montezuma is a nearby hippy town and we will take you there to check out the beautiful waterfall. You can choose to hike all the way to the top and jump off the waterfall or you can stay at the bottom and swim in the fresh pool underneath. We will also take you into the town to check out the souvenir shops.

Jared - Surf instructor

Jared has been with Lucero from day one and therefore he has been able to give a lot of our guests their first surf experience in Costa Rica. He knows how to make you laugh and fall in love with surfing!

Melchior - Host and Surf instructor

He is your to go to person during your vacation. He'll be there to give you a warm welcome when you arrive, go over the week-schedule, keep you company and help you with everything you may need during your stay!

Mark - Surf instructor

Mark will show you the ropes of surfing here in Santa Teresa. He'll get you comfortable in the water and teach you how to catch waves. He's surfed his whole life and teaches both beginners and intermediates.

Francesca - Yoga teacher

With many years of experience, Francesca is an amazing yoga instructor. Her classes are relaxing but can also be challenging. She's taught yoga for Lucero since the very beginning- in 2007.

Daily tropical meals served for breakfast and lunch. Your chef, Maria, has worked in the kitchen of the restaurant since the day the hotel opened its doors. You probably won't see her much but now you know she's the one that prepares all your yummy breakfasts and lunches-and she does it with a lot of local love!

Tamar is your massage therapist as well as on site manager. From relaxing to deep tissue, you can request the kind of massage you would like to have. Everyone loves Tamar for her body- work. She usually lives and surfs in Holland but the winters she likes to get away and enjoy the tropics.

Along the coast of Santa Teresa there are many beautiful natural tide pools. Its the perfect place to enjoy an afternoon off, bring some beverages and soak up the beautiful weather and nature of Costa Rica.

You can walk everywhere but we don't recommend doing this during the heat of the day! You can also rent bikes for $5 USD/day. This makes it a lot easier to get around and you can go up the road to Playa Hermosa or even further. There is also the option to rent a quad, the cost for this is $70 USD/day. A lot of fun and a good way to check out neighbor towns like Montezuma.

"Marieke and Jared were unreal hosts! From the beginning of the trip, they both made us feel like friends of theirs and constantly checked up on us to make sure we had everything we needed. They let us use their ATVs whenever we wanted to go off on excursions or to venture off to find a dinner spot (food was AMAZING btw!! Expensive restaurants, but totally worth it!). There were so many things to do in Santa Teresa and the surrounding towns; which they gave us so many tips on where to eat and the secluded "local" spots to hit up- waterfalls, snorkeling, shopping towns, bat cave, hidden beach, infinity pool overlooking coast...the list could go on! The villa was only a couple minute walk to the beach, and a great location in the town. Room was beautiful! Jared was one of the best surf instructors we've had! He always kept the lessons fun and carefree, constantly building up our confidence, and taught us how to really surf! We cannot wait to visit again soon and we thank them for truly making our trip unforgettable!"

"I booked my trip within a week of my travels and was so happy with the outcome! Marieke and Jared are both very personal, knowledgeable and trustworthy. Their responsive communication throughout my stay was super helpful, especially as a solo traveler and first visit to Costa Rica. My accommodations were just what I was looking for. Quiet, private, clean and PLENTY of surfing!!! They coordinated other amenities such as on-site massage too. An unforgettable trip thanks to Lucero Surf Retreats!! I will most definitely return."

"I was a solo female traveler on this trip and met a great group of other young travelers to hang with. Jared and Marieke are wonderful and really fun people to be around. They were really helpful at showing us around town, recommending things to do and the pointing out the best restaurants. Whatever we needed, they were there for us and very accommodating. I stayed at Griss which was clean and had a friendly staff. However, I spent a great deal of time at Otro Lado and would probably choose that spot next time as I just preferred the breakfast more there =) I spent 5 days surfing and felt like the instructors were wonderful and I was really getting the hang of it by the end of my trip. I also did some yoga which had a great outdoor studio and good instructors. Overall, great time and I will definitely return!"

"Lucero Surf Retreats is a family run business that puts an intimate and tailored touch to their retreat for each and every guest. The owners are personally involved in your vacation and go to great efforts to ensure each attendee has a positive experience. Not only are Marieke and Jared great organizers and providers, but they personally spend time with every guest and go above and beyond the course of normal duties to ensure your needs are met. Staying with them was an absolute pleasure and I would highly recommend their retreat to anyone interested, especially given the remarkably affordable price and personal touch only they offer."

"We give Lucero Surf Retreats our highest recommendation. We spent a week with them along with our two children and seven other family members and had the time of our lives. Marieke and Jared made us feel like we were visiting our best friends. They were exceptional. They were flexible and accommodating and arranged all our activities: zip lining, an incredible 9 hour ATV trek to waterfalls, yoga on the beach every morning, massages, and of course, surf lessons at the world's greatest beach to learn how to surf. They also arranged for babysitting and had an incredible chef prepare breakfast and lunch each day and dinners upon our request. It was a perfect carefree vacation and we left feeling rested, energized, and fit. It was a trip we will never forget!"

"Lucero Surf Retreats was an amazing experience. I traveled there with my sister for an escape to the sand and surf. Lucero is run by a couple who coordinate and organize the entire vacation for you. They coordinate great accommodations that are convenient to town, comfortable, and elegant. They supply the very best surf instructors - this first-time surfer got up on my first day - and provide an exceptional yoga experience in a super studio. Beyond the location and the accommodations, it's really Marieke and Jared that deliver an exceptional experience. They go out of their way to ensure you enjoy yourself. I would recommend Lucero 150% and plan on going back every year. Highly, highly recommend for an amazing experience guided by the best."

"Lucero surf retreats planned an amazing family vacation!!! We had a large group (that included 5 children under 11) and Marieke & Jared made sure we all had the best time. They organized every aspect of our vacation and we loved it all -- surfing (with Jared and Mark), Yoga on the beach with Angela, ATVs to Montezuma (a favorite!) and zip lining. Our chef, Mike, prepared incredible meals and could not have been nicer or more accommodation to our large crew. Highly recommend Lucero!!! They are a fantastic company run by two of the nicest people we've ever worked it!"

"We had an amazing time in Santa Teresa Costa Rica! Truly memories that will last a lifetime. Jared and Marieke made it a wonderful experience. They organized zip line, yoga, paddle board, massages, and surf lessons. The guys at the zip line were so fun--we had a blast! The massage was also amazing. I felt so relaxed afterwards. The beach at Santa Teresa is unbelievably beautiful. Morning yoga on the beach was a great way to start the day. Followed by a delicious breakfast. We felt so pampered! Mike is a fantastic cook--something different and delicious every morning. Although it takes a lot of travel to get to Santa Teresa it was worth it. The beach and surf conditions are perfect for a family. I am a nervous swimmer but I felt very safe and comfortable because the beach is shallow enough to walk out for surfing. My sister in law had been surfing before and was able to surf more aggressively on the outer break. Jared and Mark were fantastic surf instructors. We were all able to stand up on the surf board on our first lesson! My 12 year old son was a quick learner and they were able to keep him progressing--learning to surf in the pocket of the wave and on the face of the wave in just four lessons. I can't say enough wonderful things about Santa Teresa, Costa Rica and Lucero!"

"Lucero Surf Retreats delivered what was unanimously considered the "best family vacation" we have ever had. Santa Teresa is a fantastic surf beach town, locals are incredibly friendly, our accommodations/villas were amazing, the outdoor activities numerous (zip line, ATV, SUP) and most important the surfing was the best/most consistent beach break wave we have ever enjoyed (my wife has been on numerous surf trips). All of these great things and it was Jared and Marieke's hospitality that stood out above all else and really made the trip. They are so unbelievably committed and focused on providing the best possible experience for all of their guests. My wife is intent on our young boys getting more exposure to surfing, there is no question we will be back to Santa Teresa in near future and I feel grateful to have found Lucero (Jared and Marieke) and cant wait to see them again. NOTE - being our first time, we took a very circuitous route traveling (think 2 flights and 5 hour drive), I have since found a direct flight into San Jose through Southwest and with another quick/inexpensive short flight we will be 40 minutes drive from Santa Teresa."

"Marieke and Jared coordinated a family surf trip to Playa Santa Teresa for ten of us this Christmas. I've always wanted to take my kids surfing. This was our best Christmas ever! "

"These guys managed to accommodate all of us from my 72 year old mother in law to my three year old niece...and everyone in between. We had lovely accommodations, delicious food, and sweet waves. "

"The beach is truly unique. No crowds. Clear beautiful water. Sandy bottom. Nice clean waves every morning. Beautiful break for experienced surfers. Great opportunity for beginners on the inside. My 8 and 10 year old boys were catching their own waves and loving the great rides. Jared both instructed the kids about basic safety in the water and taught them to surf. "

"You can probably learn all that on their website. What made the trip even more special was the feeling that we were visiting friends. Marieke and Jared welcomed us into this unique community and shared some of their favorite friends and experienced with us. We went to a community beach party on Sunday night. Our kids got to swing from trapezes in the trees while we enjoyed a bonfire. Our yoga instructor Angela was the perfect start to every morning. The massage therapists were the best I've ever met. And zip lining through the forest canopy was incredible. "

"We can't wait to go back."

"Marieke was amazingly helpful, accommodating, friendly and stayed in touch leading up to and all throughout the week. We had to delay our package trip at last minute due to access issues, and Marieke moved our trip back without any issue or extra cost. Transport was timely and easy. Accommodation at Griss was perfect, as it was low season we were upgraded to a house vs a room. Perfect location directly across from best surf waves. Breakfasts there were lovely and service with a smile. Ricardo was a wonderful host and made you feel really welcome. Mark our surf instructor is quite a character, very punctual (to the minute!) and very positive. We struggled the first two days with some difficult waves, but he was very encouraging, and days 3 and 4 were great and successful. Lunches at Olam were outstanding! Food was amazing! Yoga was fantastic at Nautilus, my husband a beginner and myself intermediate both left more grounded and filled with contentment and gratitude. Julieta who does the massage is heavenly! We had a couple of changes to the itinerary due to being slow season, but Marieke was quick to come up with substitute or compensation to make up. All in all an amazing trip and will definitely be back to Santa Teresa!"

"I went alone for a full immersion in the relax, and so it was: The hotel (Griss) was perfect, comfortable and relaxing, very colse to the sea; the lunch at Otro Lado super healthy and tasty, made with love; Mark, the surf teacher amazing and very professional, let me surf some interesting waves in just one week, and the yoga lessons at Nautilus were long, intense and full of tips, for a total rebirth week."

"Special mention to Marieke, more than an organizer, an angel: she was able to perfectly schedule my week and solve eventual small problems with the excursions (that are absolutely worth it, as well as the massage with the gold-handed Julietta). Left my heart there and will come back for sure!"

"We stayed with Lucero Surf Retreats for a week and had one of the most memorable stays we've ever had! The grounds and rooms at the hotel, Otro Lado, are beautiful and immaculate, and the owners make you feel right at home straight from the start. There's a lovely restaurant serving up delicious Italian fare (the hotel owners are Italian, so you know it's good), a relaxing pool, hammocks across the hotel grounds, and a great community- but private- feel to it. Otro Lado understands that it's all in the details, and they do a great job at it.We did the morning yoga and it was a fantastic way to start our day. Francesca was a super knowledgable yoga teacher. Even after practicing for a couple of years, my husband and I were able to take our practice even further with her guidance. If I could take Francesca home with me as my personal yoga instructor, then she would be mine in a heartbeat. The classes were customized to our personal fitness level and style. The outdoor yoga patio was serene and relaxing, and we especially enjoyed our one evening of candlelit yoga. We originally only signed up for four yoga classes, but we loved Francesca so much that we added an extra class with her at the last minute :)The surf lessons were new to me. My husband is an awesome surfer, but I have always been a bit hesitant. Luckily, Mark (the instructor) was so much fun! He was very supportive even when I kept falling time and time again. He is lots of fun to hang out with and made me feel very relaxed in the water. I would trust Mark with my life! Mark also listened to my objective. He knew I was there just to have a good time, and he made sure that happened. And, believe it or not, I was actually surfing in white water by the end of it. The professional surfing photos were a nice touch, and though admittedly there are a lot of me bellyflopping in the water since that's primarily what I did, my husband got some really nice shots of him actually surfing. The week ended with an amazing massage. I have had a lot of massages, which means at this point I am pretty picky. But my massage with Lucero was easily one of the best bodywork sessions I've ever had. Nathan quickly picked up where I carry stress and wasting no time in sorting it out. If you prefer a more relaxing massage, those are also available, but I recommend going for the bodywork.Overall, the best part about Lucero is it's really all about what you want. This retreat was perfect as my husband is a surfer and I practice yoga regularly. They go above and beyond to customize your week so you do exactly what you want. We've been in Costa Rica for 2 months and this was by far our favorite experience. I can't wait to go back! Thanks Lucero!"

"Overall I had a GREAT experience! Marieke and Jared were extremely hospitable. I ended up staying at a hotel next to where they normally host guests. I would have preferred to stay at the one where they normally host but the hotel i was in was a short walk away and was fine - mostly families and/or couples. As a solo traveler, I found it a bit difficult to meet folks and english is def not the first language in the town of Santa Teresa. Luckily with the AWESOME help of Jared and Marieke, I felt like a local who knew the best of everything but the end of my stay. The highlight for me was definitely the surf lessons. I did 4 with Mark and 1 with Jared. All 1on1 lessons which was great. The attention to detail and personalization Mark and Jared provided helped me take my surf game to a whole new level where i was able to exceed my goals by the end of my trip.Spending time with Jared, Marieke and their adorable daughters made for a memorable trip. I had hoped more Lucero guests were there at the same time however, I am looking forward to coming back when Lucero opens up their own stay where they host, feed, yogi and shred the gnar with many more travelers!"

"It was my first time visiting Costa Rica and I had the time of my life. Marieke helped my friend every step of the way with our travel plans, making it so relaxing to just sit and enjoy their services when we arrived. It is A MUST to use them if you want to learn how to surf. Jared took us to the most perfect area of the beach, and was hands down the only instructor I'd want to have learned from. I was fairly anxious as it was my first time surfing and with his guidance I was able to stand up on the board and surf within the first lesson. I highly recommend using Lucero, it was truly a trip of a lifetime."

"First off this trip was seamless because of Marieke and Jared. Marieke did all the heavy lifting booking our hotel, and activities (ziplining was amazing and is a must). She went out of her way to make sure my stay was nothing but amazing, and I can't wait to return and see both of them. Jared is the most amazing surf instructor, he takes his time and makes sure you feel good, and doesn't just throw you out in the middle of the ocean with a board. I had never surfed before and was up and surfing in an afternoon with his help. This whole area has such amazing food, shops and the beaches are just a dream. I can't image going anywhere else in Costa Rica, this place is truly magical."

Both of us are at different levels of surfing and Jared was able to give us one on one lessons to support both of us getting better at surfing. We will be back!
