Pre-application requirements

There are no prior requirements to participate in this program. People of all backgrounds, ages (minimum 18), experience levels, and body types are welcome.

No experience with yoga or Buddhism is necessary. To be a teacher of any movement practice implies that you feel comfortable speaking in front of others (or are willing to develop that skill as needed), are articulate, do not mind demonstrating and/or repeating simple movements, enjoy interacting with others, and value personal development and ongoing learning.

All you need is a commitment to your own growth, health, and happiness, and to want the same for others! No prior Lu Jong experience required. The student will complete a Lu Jong New York application after payment is received. Students must also register directly with NMI organization (the sponsor) to enroll in the Teacher Education Program after payment is received.

You will need a yoga mat, props if needed for comfort (blocks, cushion, and more), study supplies (notebook, pens, and more), as well as a computer/device and access to the internet. You will also need to download the Zoom application but do not need a Zoom account to take this training.

After the certification day, you will receive an official listing as a certified teacher on the international Lu Jong website. Other than that, you will receive an official certificate confirming your certification status and permission to teach Lu Jong in the lineage of Tulku Lobsang Rinpoche.

The certification is sponsored and certified by Nangten Menlang International. The NMI Certified Educator is Joelle Kelly, Lu Jong New York. Students will be Tibetan Lu Jong Level 1 Certified Teachers. You must attend all of the online certification ceremonies to receive the certificate.

How the training works

The Lu Jong Teacher Education Program is ongoing with the final worldwide ONLINE and IN-PERSON certification events scheduled for:

  • October 1 - October 3, 2021: In-Person (online)
  • the 2022 certification event date TBD, will be held ONLINE

There will be a minimum of 105 contact hours and a minimum of 25 non-contact hours for self-study.

For certification days Oct 1 - Oct 3, 2021, exams must be successfully completed by August 30, 2021. Please note that this event is to be held ONLINE.

ALL studies and exams must be completed a minimum of ONE month in advance of certification event dates.

You may take anywhere from 3 weeks to up to 15 months to complete your studies. This can be discussed and structured directly with Joelle Kelly. All the teaching hours are live online. The private training starts at 130 hours because working directly, one-to-one, one can accomplish a lot more. There will be written and practical exams, these exams are a part of your training and take place under the guidance of your educator, Joelle Kelly.

The Zoom live sessions are not recorded and there are no pre-recorded materials to learn from since there is a high ratio of direct contact hours with Joelle. Joelle also has a Thinkific teaching platform where she posts reference materials and from where students can download assignments and support materials.

You will receive ongoing organization support, information, and updates and the possibility to promote yourself on the NMI Lu Jong website, where interested people search for certified teachers. You will receive clear guidelines on teaching policies to preserve the quality and integrity of the practice.

You will also receive a personal page and official personal email address on the international website, access to and permission to use the licensed material of NMI, including logos, advertising materials, teaching handouts, and certain images and graphics. You will also have the privilege to continue having available access to Joelle Kelly in the future.

Timing of sessions

All times are EDT (GMT -4) and/or EST (GMT-5). For this private training, the timing of sessions is to be determined by teacher and student but the training must meet the minimum hours required for certification.

Curriculum information

The course curriculum is offered under the auspices of the Nangten Menlang International Buddhist Medical Organization, founded and directed by Tulku Lobsang. The organization, a “School of Inner Medicine”, offers many teachings in Tibetan Buddhism and Tantrayana healing wisdom with the ultimate goal being the preservation and spread of traditional Tibetan healing arts.

The Teacher Education Program has been created with an eye toward the training of high-quality and motivated teachers with a positive connection with Lu Jong Tibetan Healing Yoga. The power of Lu Jong is in its gentle ability to bring healing to all levels of students whilst encouraging them to take charge of their health by learning how to tap into their innate wisdom.

What is Lu Jong?

In Tibetan, Lu means body and Jong means transformation. By combining slow, meditative movements with rhythmic breathing, you massage blocked points open to re-establish the vital flow of blood, oxygen, and energy throughout the body. Physically, Lu Jong functions on the principles of Tibetan Medicine and balances all body systems.

It nurtures the spine, aligns the musculoskeletal system, improves joint mobility, and boosts organ function. Mentally, Lu Jong cultivates a calm, focused mind, transforming volatile negative emotions into peace and equanimity. In fact, Lu Jong is part of a deep spiritual tradition that uses the body as a vehicle for self-transformation.

About the Lu Jong teacher education

Taught by NMI certified educator Joelle Kelly, the program is designed to transpire over a minimum of 14 days, strategically scheduled to encourage a deep connection with the movements and the rich context of the teachings that support them. Private training offers the greatest flexibility for studies as the format of study dates is organized to accommodate personal schedules.

In all cases, the pace will be such as to permit time to study and practice with Joelle, and fully absorb the content in body and mind. This training is much more than learning "choreography" and memorizing the names of movements. The curriculum encompasses the complete set of 23 Lu Jong Level 1 Movements and the comprehensive full Lu Jong Manual (340 pages).

Specific topics that will be covered:

  • The history of Lu Jong
  • The benefits of Lu Jong
  • Foundations of Tibetan Buddhism
  • Overview of Tibetan medicine
  • The Lu Jong practice and modifications
  • Additional practices to support Lu Jong
  • Pedagogic tools and marketing guidance
  • The opportunity to apply for mentoring with Joelle Kelly

Steps to becoming a Lu Jong teacher:

  • Registration: Apply to study with NMI certified Lu Jong Educator Joelle Kelly, and if accepted, register into the Teacher Education program
  • Education: Attend and complete the Lu Jong Teacher Training program
  • Exams: You are required to demonstrate a satisfactory understanding of the material by means of practical and written exams. The practical exam places focus upon the movements and your ability to share and teach the lineage clearly. The online, written exam addresses the theories and foundations of Lu Jong (an open book test). These exams are a part of your training and take place under the guidance of your educator, Joelle Kelly
  • Final certification: The last step where you receive the direct transmission from Tulku Lobsang in addition to deepening your understanding of Lu Jong and your role as a teacher. You will also receive (via mail for online trainees) your teaching certificate. This is an annual online event, with several specific dates, where you can participate from your computer over the course of a weekend. You may also choose to attend this final event in person, in Europe once travel restrictions are lifted, where it is offered twice a year also on specific dates.
  • This is not an exam but an opportunity to connect with other Lu Jong teachers, meet Tulku Lobsang and receive his blessing, and learn how Lu Jong fits into a deeper path of true health and well-being.
  • Renewals: Your Teaching Certificate does not have an expiration date however you are encouraged to participate in any of the annual Master Class events to stay connected with the lineage and to learn about updates and modifications to the movements.
