Full Moon Cyprus Yoga Retreat

Join in this full moon yoga retreat and immerse yourself in yoga in this wonderful remote part of Cyprus. The full moon is a time to nourish ourselves and our yoga will reflect this stage of the lunar cycle with heartful yoga, meditation and self-enquiry practices designed to support the replenishing of our bodies and the nurturing of our hearts and spirits. We will enjoy a special full moon celebration on the full moon night.

All accommodation is en-suite and spacious, with air-conditioner, a sea view and its own private terrace. There is a mini bar and a safe in each room. The rooms are cleaned daily and towels are provided.

Your yoga classes will focus on an energetic nourishing of your body, heart, and mind, building steadiness, calm, and strength in body and mind. This is to support the building of our immunity and strength (physical, mental and emotional, also spiritual). We call this strength “ojas” and it will be one of the focuses of all practices and lifestyle recommendations offered during the retreat. Ojas is held to be a source of our vitality, vigour, immunity, and longevity and it literally translates as “glow of health”. We focus on building it and it's clear from the joy and healthy glow in participants at the end of these retreats, that the environment, the lifestyle, the home grown healthy foods, and the practices all combine to build this inner strength and vitality. It’s important to spend time to replenish this essence of strength within us.

And when the moon is full and the light of the moon shines on us, we again have the perfect condition for building that inner vitality and radiance, or "ojas".

We will begin our mornings with Hatha yoga classes, and in the afternoon we will enjoy the replenishing power of Yin and Restorative yoga classes. This combination rests and strengthens the nervous system, soothes the heart and mind, and replenishes our energy reserves to build inner vigor and immunity. The best part about this is you will be practicing yoga outdoors on a yoga platform in the hotel gardens, a stone’s throw from the sea alongside a deserted unspoiled beach, with stunning views of the coast and mountains.

The yoga classes will be followed by special breathing practices, healing visualizations, and meditations, created to reinforce and build on the power of the Hatha practices, restoring positivity, and optimism to the mind.

During the night of the May 2018 full moon, under the light of the moon and at the edge of the sea, we will gather on the beach for a special full moon meditation. Sunrise and sunset beach meditations will take place most mornings and evenings. We will gather on the beach and meditate together as the sun rises over the mountains and sets over the sea.

Please note that there won’t be any class on your arrival day. The first class will start the next morning. There will also be no planned lunch, dinner or afternoon yoga on Friday. This is to give all participants the chance to explore more of the beauty of Cyprus, or simply enjoy more time relaxing in the hotel grounds, or by the sea.

There are possible local excursions to take to the nearby museum of ancient artifacts in Polis, to the lovely shops of the small town of Polis, to Aphrodite's baths, or boat trips to the Blue Lagoon and around the Akamas peninsula.

Longer excursions may be planned for your day off to the Troodos Mountains, Jeep Eco Tour of the Akamas Peninsula, or to the ancient sites in and around Paphos. These are not included in the retreat fee. However, both Shama and the hotel and are very happy to advise and to help you organize your days out.

    Shama learned yoga from her yoga teacher, who taught her the power of the breathing practices of Hatha yoga. She spent a lot of time traveling around the globe to places such as India, Japan, Thailand, Italy, USA, Canada, and the Bahamas, where she learned from and practiced many healing and spiritual traditions, before managing an integrative health clinic in London. She took her teacher training course from Sivananda Ashram yoga retreat in the Bahamas.

You will be staying in a quiet, remote, eco-hotel, set alongside a beautiful stretch of coast in Cyprus. Here, your accommodation and yoga space look out across the sea and are surrounded by peaceful gardens, olive and orange groves, and herb gardens with mountains beyond to three sides. The tranquil, natural setting invites your whole-being to deeply relax and restore itself to balance and happiness.

Apart from the Restorative yoga classes and meditations, further nourishment is offered during this week with the lovely meals offered.. The price of this retreat includes lovingly-prepared Cypriot vegetarian meals to support your full moon practices and the intent to build your health and vitality. Foods in the hotel are made from home-grown organic produce and locally sourced produce. This means the meals are full of nutrients and easily digestible to support the healing, cleansing, and nourishment of the internal organs that your daily yoga practices will be initiating.

Breakfast is a buffet service, taken with other guests of the hotel, and includes home-made bread, preserves, yogurt, goats’ cheeses, home-grown fruits, herbal teas, and the hotel’s own free range eggs. Lunch and dinner are specially prepared for the yoga retreat participants and are 95% plant-based meals with a little optional dairy. Special dietary requirements such as gluten-free and dairy-free diets can be accommodated.

Meals are taken on the restaurant terrace with views across the gardens to the sea. In the evening, you will dine while watching spectacular sunsets as the sun starts to go down over the sea. The hotel lounge bar sells juices, water, and local wine.

Please note that only breakfast meals will be served on Fridays to allow free time for exploration.

There is a swimming pool, gym, and sauna at the hotel for your enjoyment. A 5 EUR fee is charged by the hotel for the use of the gym and sauna. The hotel provides beach towels and there are sun beds on the sea front, around the pool, and in the gardens. Bikes are available for hire, and there are also tennis courts.

In between classes and meal times, you are free to enjoy the peace and quiet of the hotel gardens and beach, or to explore the beauty, history, and culture of the surrounding area.

There is the nearby small town of Polis with its many cafes, restaurants, and shops. Nearby sites of interest include Aphrodite’s Baths and the beautiful nature reserve of the Akamas Peninsula. There are jeep tours around the Akamas nature reserve, and boat tours to the wild and deserted Lara Bay and Blue Lagoon.

A little further afield in Paphos, are wonderful archaeological sites such as Tombs of the Kings and the Paphos Mosaics.

    my yoga retreat experience

    CONS Cons: The food could have been more interesting. We were definitely too many people in the room for yoga, so our poses were often compromised. I would have liked a bit more help in getting the poses right.

I'm very happy to read that you enjoyed the weekend and found it relaxing. Yes, unfortunately the food was not so good this weekend and on other weekends it has been much tastier. I have to take some responsibility for that. I asked a lot of the chef with the Ayurveda meals and he willingly tried his best for us with unknown recipes. We have addressed this now so that he will prepare vegetarian meals for us in future to his own recipes. In the past the food has been delicious this way. We also have a larger studio room to use now for the Hatha Yoga classes and will still use the lovely room in the old Hall for our meditation and lectures etc. I have taken note of your wish that you would have liked more assistance with poses. I always give verbal alignment cues as precision alignment teaching is very important to me. Injuries can happen through hands-on adjustment and so I am cautious at first with students I don't know.     Great quiet spot

    CONS Cons: Room was ok. Would have preferred not to be on the ground floor as a single woman - no safe and the window didn't lock - room didn't seem that secure. The food wasn't great. Classes were good, but there was very little feedback when people got poses wrong or didn't understand the pose (she did realise thus was an issue as this was much better on the Sunday).

I'm so sorry though that you felt uncomfortable in your room. Walton Hall Hotel is a safe secure hotel to the standards of any 4* UK hotel. I always check that everyone is happy with their room and am sorry if I did not check with you. We would certainly have found you a room where you felt secure. We have improved the meals for future retreats at Walton Hall. I asked a lot of the chef in March 2017 with Ayurvedic recipes that were unfamiliar to him. On previous retreats the food has been delicious, and we will return to his own vegetarian recipes following the Ayurvedic seasonal eating guidelines. Regarding assistance with postures during teaching, I'd like to include here a couple of reviews recently received: "I returned to my regular beachside yoga class feeling much more confident, and did a yoga workshop this weekend with a Canadian lady who was just over here for a few days teaching....... and I felt my body positioning was much better after you guidance".     "Dear Shama, I contacted quite a few yoga teachers when making my first enquiries, and to be completely honest you were the only person who came back to me and said you would be able to help, which I find quite hard to believe considering that the benefits of yoga during any kind of life-altering situation like that are fairly well documented. As for myself, I truly believe that learning basic beginners poses and breathing exercises helped me immeasurably during my treatment last year, both physically and mentally. I feel that they (combined with traditional medical intervention) helped to keep my immune system healthy, strong, and on track not once during my treatment was I neutropenia, which I've been told is quite rare. Physically, the exercises helped ease general joint pain and my digestive system, and the arm / shoulder ones were a great accompaniment to the general physic exercises I had been set to help improve the movement in my arm post-surgery. I also found the short relaxation exercises you taught me invaluable in being able to mentally deal with insomnia, which becomes part and parcel with all of the drugs. Post treatment, I have found the general mindset that you get from yoga to be brilliant in helping to deal with day-to-day stress: in going back to work, and also having to deal with the events of the last year. My arm is still at risk of lymphedema, and the gentle stretching that yoga encourages I have found to be the best way of helping to keep this at bay, and reducing symptoms when they start."

    "I am 58 years old, female and always loved swimming and exercise but despite being active, I gained three stone in weight over a five year period. I thought I was lazy and greedy until I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I had so many clothes and shoes that I couldnt wear. At the start of this year I began to practice yoga with Shama in Alveston and Wellesbourne, and it has had a big impact on my weight, my shape and my health. Before I started to practice yoga, I had mobility problems due to pain, fatigue and insomnia. I could not work for long periods at the computer or standing due to pain. The pain began as two frozen shoulders which then lead to back pain. I had stopped doing a lot of things for fear of hurting my back. Yoga has given me the confidence to start doing all the things I had stopped doing for fear of triggering pain. I had always swam a lot and for 2 years did not swim which left me feeling weak and tired. I joined Walton Hall so that I could start practicing yoga. And after just four classes, I began to realized I was sleeping all night, waking up earlier, I could now do the gardening and computer work without having to stop. Yoga has given me the ability to work and play in a way I did in my youth. I have always had a happy disposition and a spring in my step, but I lost that due to pain. Yoga over the past 6 months has really healed a lot of the problems I had been having with my body. And through the education given in class, I now know that if aches and pains arise, I have the right understanding to get rid of the pain. One of the reasons I was attracted to yoga was to manage the challenge of my only child going off to university have been able to cope with the separation very well, I know it is early days but yoga has managed my moods through recent stressful events.After yoga I sleep soundly and wake up earlier than ever before have not had the usual reactive depression to these big changes that I probably would have had in the past before I took up yoga. Shama is a gentle teacher and has helped me to maximize my potential within the limits of my body, its strengths and weaknesses. I had a few private lessons in the beginning to learn the practices in detail, and this gave me the confidence to attend more classes and improve my own practice. I now have much more strength, flexibility and general confidence. And regular yoga practice has helped my health in many ways."
